Speaking of pure goal-scoring top line wingers... Does Milan Hejduk even age? I feel like he could trot out there and put up a 20 goal season when he's 50. I hope with the obvious potential this team has, the Duke can be enticed to put off retirement for another few years. I'd love to see him make a run at 1000 career points and another Cup. |

Duke should play for as long as his body will allow. The Avs will no doubt be a less threatening offensive club without him around. So if the Avs can pull out a win tonight, it'll be the first time they've won their first four road games in 26 years. Pressure on. |

Yeah, might actually start to get some recognition in the NHL if they can pull that off.

So the Jets are finding their first win to be pretty elusive. How's that going over in Winnipeg, Brad? |

Bruins are off to a bit of a slow start this year, but came back to beat Chicago in a shootout earlier. I have to say, Tyler Seguin looks like he'll be something special one day. Not exactly a groundbreaking observation I suppose, but still, he looks so natural out there. |

Yeah, the B's are obviously still recovering from their Stanley Cup hangover. I expect them to remain a top team as the season wears on. Fun fact: Avs have won 13 out of their last 14 shootouts. |

An Avs victory tonight would mark the first time in franchise history in which they win 5 consecutive road games. I pray the Hockey Gods let it be so. |

You two seem to know more about hockey than I do, so maybe you can answer my question. On my fantasy hockey team, I see rather often that the +/- totals do not make complete sense when everything is examined. For example, tonight Brian Campbell finished with four assists in a 7-4 win, but somehow finished -1. If he had four assists, than to me means that he was on the ice for those four goals, and since the opposition only scored 4 goals, how could he finish worse than 0? The only explanation I can think of is that he passes the puck to someone then went off the ice immediately afterwards, but I see this oddity more often than it should appear based on that one situation. Is there something I'm missing here? |

Shorthanded and power play goals for or against do not count towards plus/minus. |

Hm, that seems to be exactly it, thank you. Oddly, all four of those assists were on the power play, so I got no +/- help there, but I'll take 4 power play points in return. |

Columbus is in serious trouble. They are 0-5-1 on the season and are drawing sub-10,000 crowds. |

The fans don't give a fuck. Its the Jets, they're back, beer exists. Its a party every time they play, whether they win or not. From what I've been seeing and reading, they seem to be finding their groove, and are getting used to the new coach, staff and city. They aren't going to be winning any Stanley Cups any time soon, but they definitely have a great foundation to build towards one. |

I'll be at the Jets/Avs game. Also, one of the Jets' current minor league (ECHL) affiliates plays about an hour away from me. The Colorado Eagles play in Loveland and I will be at one of their games on Saturday. As for the Columbus Blue Jackets... who knows. They were rumored to be in trouble for many years due to Ohio State University hosing them on their arena lease (OSU owns their arena and had been charging them insane rent), but they finally seemed to get a better deal at the end of last season. So we'll have to wait and see with them. The Phoenix Coyotes are still in serious trouble. There are two groups rumored to be interested in buying the team and keeping it in Phoenix, but I would bet money on the team being gone in five years (probably less). The New York Islanders have been having serious trouble getting a new arena built and as such their attendance has suffered in recent years, but the team still has a lucrative TV deal and they finally seem to be making progress on the arena front. My gut says that they'll be sticking to New York. The other team that could move soon is the Florida Panthers, who have consistently drawn horrible crowds and even worse TV audiences. They seem to be locked into a very long-term lease, but there are usually ways around that. As for destination markets, there are really only a few viable options: 1. Quebec Quebec has the inbuilt fanbase of the Nordiques, they are getting a new arena soon and the old Colisee could be used if a team needs to be relocated before it's done, and the group rumored to be interested in bringing a team there has a multi-billion dollar media empire (Quebecor). I'd say that Quebec is absolutely a slam dunk for a team in the next few years, whether that be due to expansion or (more likely) relocation. 2. Seattle Seattle is one market that the NHL has been salivating over. The city recently lost its NBA team because nobody wanted to foot the bill for a new arena for them. But there are plans amongst many local groups and politicians to get said new arena built, and they think it'll be an easier sell if they could get an NHL team to go along with the return of an NBA team (plus the WNBA team that already plays there; also, the AFL would definitely jump on the market if they had proper facilities). The NHL wants the large market and also desperately needs more teams in the West. 3. Hamilton Hamilton, being part of the greater Toronto area, would be a high revenue team. They're bound to get a team eventually (There are two NHL teams in or around LA, three for New York, so why not two for Toronto?). There is no shortage of rich dudes who would want in on the action. Their arena isn't too old, but would likely need roughly 100 million dollars worth of renovations (which, again, isn't bad for the market potential). The only real hold up here is potential territorial rights payments to the Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres. Kansas City has been rumored as they have a world class arena with only one team (Arena Football), but the market has never demonstrated fan interest and no potential owners are known. Unlikely from my perspective. Vegas has also been rumored, but they have no arena. Plus Vegas doesn't support any of their other teams for shit and then there's the whole gambling stigma. This one seems like another longshot. |
