Bergeron won the Selke, glad to see him get the recognition.

O'Reilly was voted criminally low for the Selke. 14th for a 21 year old who competed with Pavel fucking Datsyuk for #1 in takeaways all season and played in all defensive situations successfully? Pshh.

Avs re-signed Wilson to a 4-year deal and decided to not qualify Mueller. Interesting. If they're letting one of our most skilled wingers go, that can only mean they're looking into the likes of Parise or Semin.

Avs re-signed Downie to a two year deal. Awesome, awesome news.

Dater is off speculating again and seems to believe we'll be throwing an offer or two at the top-tier free agents come Sunday:
Quote:

As always with the Avs, you have to be good at trying to parse the meaning of their words.

So, I give you this statement from Avs GM Greg Sherman, to my question about whether the Avs plan to be “active” on Sunday, the start of NHL free agency:
“As always we are looking for ways to improve our roster, and to that end, Sunday we will be in discussion with several players’ agents.
“Lately we have agreed to terms with several of our own players and we will continue to have discussions with our own RFA’s.”

So, does this mean Sherman will be in discussion only the agents of his own unsigned players on Sunday, or those from players around the league that are available? That’s all I got here for us all to go on.

But my strong hunch is: no, not just his own players. The Avs are going to try and sign a free or two or three on the open market.
For one clue as to my hunch: I spoke with the agent of Ryan O’Reilly today and was told that not much is going on with his situation at the moment. But that is not expected to be a worry. A deal will get done. It just looks like it’s going to go into July or August before that happens.

My other hunch is that the Avs will want to take a shot at landing one of the big fish in the pool, a Zach Parise or Ryan Suter or Alex Semin. I still think they will be very much long shots, and fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. But the fact is the Avs have the second-most cap room in the league at the moment, nearly $36 million. They can throw some serious money at any of these guys if they want.

Sunday should be interesting.
I hope he's right.

Listening to Dater is a waste of time. Even if he ends up correct it'll be by mere coincidence.

The only thing of worth to pull out of that article is that Sherman will most definitely be sending offers to various FA's come Sunday. That's good enough for me.

Pretty stoked for free agency tomorrow. There's a ton of big pieces that would fit the Avs' mold. In order of importance, they should be targeting:

Suter
Parise
Semin
Doan
Carle
Parenteau
Whitney
Hudler

Hopefully they put that enormous amount of cap space to good use.

Doan

Parenteau

Already lost out on a lot of great players. Parenteau will compliment Duchene well, but we still need that pure goal-scorer. Semin fulfills that need, and then some.

Avs extend Giguere one year - very good.

Avs showing no signs to re-sign O'Reilly - very bad.

I know it'll happen eventually, but this lack of news is a bit disconcerting.

All signs pointing south:
Eric Macramalla

Speaking with some owners around league - many have been preparing for lockout for a year - they expect it.

NHLwiki

#TSN's S.MacArthur reports that Alan Thicke, who was with #Flyers owner Ed Snider yesterday, says Snider believes there will be a lockout.
And worst of all...
Mark Masters

Bettman on damage lockout could do: 'We recovered last time because we have the world's greatest fans'

Makes me fucking sick. THE NHL WILL NOT SURVIVE ANOTHER LOCKOUT. How could they be so colossally stupid? It boggles the mind really.

So the newest owner's proposal would nuke the salary cap to $58mill and does not include any rollback rules on current contracts. Obviously this won't end up being the accepted proposal being as how it requires over half of the league to shed substantial salary, but it's important to note that both sides are asscreamdicksly narrowing in on a middle-ground. If the NHLPA responds with a reasonable cap of $62-64mill and the owners agree to some form of contractual rollbacks then we MAY see the season start on time. Keep fingers crossed.

TSN

The cap for 2012-13 - projected to be $70.2 million under the existing CBA - would be cut to a fixed $58 million under the latest proposal.

That number would rise to a fixed $60 million in 2013-14 and then to a fixed $62 million the following year.

Projected cap numbers for the final three years of the deal include: $64.2 million in 2015-16, $67.6 million in 2016-17 and $71.1 million in 2017-18.

The league's proposal did not include an across-the-board reduction (or "rollback") to existing contract values. Necessary adjustments would be financed entirely from a combination of modified contracting practices, increases in league-wide revenue and from the players' Escrow contributions.

I still maintain that this is a pissing contest, and the Players couldn't possibly be stupid enough not to sign before the season starts. Not again.

The NHLPA has informed the NHL that players are willing to play and continue to negotiate if an agreement isn’t reached by Sept. 15th.
Optimism! But wait...
Tim Panaccio

League source: On Sept. 13, Bettman addresses BOG. Will re-affirm that owners r on board w/lockout if no CBA by 9/15

Eat asscream and die Bettman (and take your owners with you).

Looks like a lockout is inevitable. After the NFL and especially the NBA lockout you'd think they'd try hard to prevent one, but nope.
