Won't matter when we go into another fucking lockout next season. Did the suits and the NHLPA not learn their lesson the last two times? /pessimism

But really, who wouldn't lose their shit watching the Avs battle the Quebec Nordiques? Or Nords/Jets for that matter?

There might be a summer lockout but they absolutely will not miss any games. Fehr and Bettman are just posturing. Neither of them are stupid.

Like I said, there is zero chance of games getting missed

this is happening for two reasons:
1. The NHL saw that the NBA and NFL were both able to extract percentages of the overall revenue split between owners/players, and then realized that they give the biggest percentage of any league to the players. Most teams are doing fine but 3-4 of them are in some financial trouble.

2. The players see that league revenues, TV ratings, and merch sales are at an all time high and think that if the league just changes a few of its spending habits everyone can be profitable and the players keep all their money.

It's just going to be a summer long pissing contest at the very worst, with the two sides each pretending that other, very minor issues are very important and bartering them back and forth in exchange for a percentage of the revenue split.

Sure, sure.

That's what they said about the NBA.

That's not what I said about the NBA

I turned out to be overly pessimistic, as I predicted the season would be lost before the lockout even started and maintained that position.

The NBA and the NHL are in entirely different places right now. They're the two most comparable leagues in terms of size, revenue, arenas, and seasons but that aside they're run very differently. The NHL almost died when they lost a season and they're just now reaching new heights. They aren't going to risk that.

Pissing contest. Count on it.

I hope you're right dude. Having your finals game get outwatched by Spongebob is sad enough... another lockout would be downright devastating.

Their ad revenue is up 40% over last year's playoffs, and the overall ratings are only down from 1.4 million per game to 1.2, and that's obviously because there was an Original Six team in the finals last year.

Still pales in comparison to the other major American sports leagues in which you can fall down repeatedly to win. People who don't take hockey seriously are fucking stupid.

The NBA got a dream matchup in the Conference and NBA Finals this year, but honestly, the NHL is way closer to the NBA in terms of popularity than the NBA is to MLB. And the NFL is basically as popular as the NHL and MLB combined.

I never understood the appeal of baseball, but I get that it has that whole America's past-time thing going for it. I was under the impression that the NBA playoff ratings as a whole had been crushing the NHL's, finals aside. I'm glad to hear that's not entirely the case.

NBA actually does do better in TV ratings most of time time. That's not new.

But in terms of overall revenue, the number one measure of a sport's popularity, NBA is behind MLB by about two billion per year. NHL is behind NBA by 600-700 million per year.

Basketball translates better to TV, but hockey has a wealthier fanbase. So it's possible to get similar ad returns despite the difference in viewership.

Also of note is that the NHL has seven (maybe soon eight) of its 30 teams in Canada, while the NBA only has one. So obviously the NBA product is exposed to a bigger US audience in the first place.

The NHL remains a primarily ticket-driven league, while the NBA relies primarily on TV money. Hockey teams and basketball teams have roughly the same average attendance, but hockey tickets are way more expensive.

Makes sense. I never took ticket prices into consideration, but looking back I've spent a stupid amount of money on regular season Avs tickets. The only time a comparable amount has been spent on the Nuggets was during the playoffs. It's no wonder people bitch about ticket prices on HFBoards so much.

Lando becomes the first Av to win the Calder since Chris Drury in 1999. Good for him. He's gonna have a tremendous career.

There's an unsubstantiated rumor floating around in which Parise's rights and Hedberg would be traded to the Avs for Kobasew, Giguere, a 2012 2nd and a 2013 1st. Parise is said to have agreed upon a 7-year, $49mill contract.

...and I would lose my shit.
