With the Jets' home opener happening tonight (while I am at work no less) and there being no devoted NHL thread I can really see. I decided to make one. Go Jets! |

Good plan. I'd have made one myself, but I'm far too much of a homer to do so. That said, I really hope the Jets do well this season, especially at home. Also, fuck the Red Wings. |

Bruins lost their opener, but beat Tampa 4-1 last night. Given Tim Thomas's age, I wonder how much he'll play this season compared to last. I bet we'll see more Tukka Rask this year, maybe even in the next game (against Colorado) since Thomas played back-to-back nights. |

Got the game going on the radio here at work. 1-0 Montreal at the end of the first. Jets have about 1:20 of a two-man advantage going into the second. Hopefully the first period performance had more to do with first-day nerves. I'm still optimistic they can pull a win out. |

5-1 Montreal final. Ouch. I guess the Jets need a little more than just fan optimism. Then again, its not like Montreal are pushovers. They were getting a ton of penalties though. |

Avs just got their first goal of the season in the third period of game two after losing game one 3-0 (the third goal came with an empty net). So we're up 1-0 in Boston with 11 minutes and change left. Hejduk is the man, Varlamov has seen 60+ shots on the season and only given up one goal. |

Watched the second half of the Bruins-Avs game, and the Bruins just couldn't get the puck past Varlamov. Avs looked pretty good. |

And Varlamov with the shut out. The Avs' defense looks pretty legit this year. When we start scoring goals (and with Duchene, Stastny, Hejduk, Landeskog, and O'Reilly we WILL) this is going to be a dangerous team. |

The Avs D is unbelievably better than last season. O'Byrne's dominating hit on Chara completely set the tone for the rest of the game. This is one Avalanche club that will not be taking any more shit from anyone. As for Varly, he's blowing expectations out of the water... he truly is The Iron Curtain. I'm starting to have concerns about our offense, however. There's so much talent there, but we just can't seem to capitalize like we could early last season. Hopefully beating the defending Stanley Cup champs at home gives them enough confidence to open the floodgates from here on out. |

Wow, what an awesome game for the Avs. After two periods the game was tied, but the Avs' goalie had faced literally more than twice the amount of shots as the other team's goalie (30 vs 14). Then the Bluejackets scored to start the third period and make it a 2-1 Columbus lead. After that point, the Avs allowed a total of two more shots throughout the third period and OT. Incredible defense. Avs got the win in a shootout, 3-2. |

Really? I thought it was a pretty awful game for them despite the win. They were getting outshot and could barely muster any scoring chances until they strapped on the big boy pants and provided a 16-1 shot advantage in the third, only scoring on a very lucky deflection. The Avs have scored 3 goals in 97 shots, yet they've won 2 out of 3 games. Defense and goaltending stealing games is great and all, but a 3% shot success rate just isn't gonna cut it. Pessimism aside, I'm super stoked for Landeskog. Scoring your first NHL goal, down by one, with 40 seconds left? Kid must be on cloud 9 right now. Edited by Brokemon, Wednesday Oct 12 2011, 11:09 PM.

I agree they looked like shit on offense for the first two periods. I think they need to reshuffle the top two lines. Stastny, Duchene, Jones, and Mueller all need to step up their games. But they showed a lot of heart tonight. They got out-shot 30-14 in the first two periods, then gave up a goal they shouldn't have at the very beginning of the third period. They were playing on the road against a team desperate for a win. They could have easily folded at that point in the hockey game. We saw them do that countless times just last season. But after that early third period Columbus goal, they out-shot Columbus by a margin of 16-0, tied the game up, and ultimately won it in a shoot-out. They took more shots in the third period of this game than they have in any other period on the season. I didn't mean it was a pretty game (offensively), just that it was awesome to see the Avalanche show some backbone. As for the offense itself, I'm confident that things will pick up. You know that Jones, Duchene, Stastny, and Hejduk are going to get their goals. We're an extremely young team (only Hejduk, Hejda, and JSG are over 29) and it's going to take some time, but this roster has too much offensive talent to be held down for long. We were the #1 scoring team in the league last year before our entire roster caught the fucking SuperAIDS, and I think we're stronger on offense this year than last. Avs fans have a lot of reason for optimism, I think. The defense and goaltending is looking a lot better than I expected (though obviously it could still go south). |

Lindstrom in, Mueller out. I thought Mueller should have started out the season in Lake Erie. He doesn't seem to be back in game shape yet. |

Couldn't agree more about their heart and determination in the final period of the Columbus game. My main concern was a lack of providing (and capitalizing on) good scoring chances, but last night's game pretty much put those worries to rest. After Anderson's petty comments between the first and second period, I had a feeling we'd light him up and I'm sure as shit happy that we did. Incredible win, incredible effort; one of the best games I've seen them play in years. Also, I was ecstatic to see Lindstrom succeed in the few minutes he was given to play. He's already produced more offense in one game than Mueller has in three, and I dare say that final goal of his was Stamkos-esque. Has me really excited to see what he can do given more ice time. Oh, and Lando continues to impress. Two consecutive game-winning goals at 18? Kid's clutch. |

Yeah, the third line has been their best line so far, which is scary considering the talent the Avs have in the top two. They sure have no lack of depth at center. The only thing missing is a pure goal scoring top-line winger, which I hope Lindstrom evolves into.
