NBC has recently taken a look at parity in the four major leagues. The metrics they use are how many different teams make it to the championship over a given period of time and how many different teams win it.

The results are as follows for the last twelve seasons of each league:
NHL - 30 team league, 17 teams have been to a championship in last twelve years, 10 have won
MLB - 30 team league, 16 teams have been to a championship in last twelve years, 9 have won
NFL - 32 team league, 16 teams have been to a championship in last twelve years, 9 have won
NBA - 30 team league, 11 teams have been to a championship in last twelve years, 6 have won

So the NHL is clearly the most balanced league. MLB and the NFL have had the same number of teams reach and win championships, but MLB has a slight advantage due to having fewer overall teams.

But then comes the NBA, which clearly has no parity. This season was the first since 1998 wherein the Western Conference wasn't won by the Spurs or Lakers. In fact, only nine separate teams have won a championship since 1984.

Just another testament to what a joke the NBA has become.
Denver Broncos: defending champs, 8-6, next game 12/25 @ Kansas City Chiefs
Colorado Rockies: 75-87, missed playoffs
Colorado Avalanche: 11-18-1, next game 12/20 @ Minnesota Wild
Denver Nuggets: 12-16, next game 12/20 @ Los Angeles Clippers
Colorado Mammoth: first game 12/30 @ Buffalo Bandits
Denver Outlaws: defending champs, first game 4/22 @ Charlotte Hounds
Colorado State Rams football: 7-5, next game Idaho Bowl 12/22 vs Idaho Vandals
Colorado State Rams basketball: 8-4, next game 12/22 vs Long Beach State 49ers
Winnipeg Blue Bombers: 11-7, lost West Division Semifinal
Denver Pioneers Lacrosse: first game 1/24 vs Johns Hopkins Blue Jays
#2 Denver Pioneers Hockey: 12-3-3, next game 12/30 @ Providence College Friars

Something that has always bothered me about the NBA is how they pander to their stars more than is seen in any of the other sports. The big players "earn" the right to break the rules to a certain extent simply because they are stars, which helps out teams like LA because Kobe Bryant can get away with stuff or goes to the free throw line more often than he should. The guys in the broadcast booth are even open about guys "earning" calls, which bothers me.

Absolutely. The NBA has the worst and most biased officiating of any league, and that's not even remotely arguable. Sometimes I have to turn games off because the calls are so bad.

The NBA's philosophy of marketing stars and putting big-name players on a higher sex position than regular players has destroyed parity. Small markets teams like Charlotte, Indianapolis, Memphis, Utah, Oklahoma City, and Milwaukee are at a distinct disadvantage. They don't have the local corporate dollars required for big-name players to earn big sponsorship money, so it's hard for teams to hold onto their stars, so they won't be able to compete in the long run. You're nuts if you think Durant is staying in OKC (unless some MAJOR changes happen in the next CBA).

We've even seen this happen in markets as large as Denver, Sacramento, and Cleveland (all of which have at least two million people in their respective metro areas).

Damn right it is. Except the NHL celebritizes the players that earn them the most cash (ie. Crosby & Ovechkin), leading to prioritizing some teams over others in both events and national television time. But the same could pretty much be said for any of the other three leagues, so whatevs.

TV time and special events (Winter/Heritage Classic, All-Star Game, etc) are going to be determined on a supply/demand basis. Which is fine, because neither event really affects fairness from a competitive standpoint.
