San Antonio is the only small market team that has won a championship since the 1977 Blazers. There's really no debating that the NBA has the least parity of all the major sports leagues, and baseball doesn't even fucking have a salary cap. And Miami is a bigger media market than Denver: http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2011/03/nba-market-size-numbers-game/ Look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NBA_champions Since the Blazers last won in 1977, here are the finals appearances and wins per team LA Lakers: 16 appearances, 10 wins Boston Celtics: 7 appearances, 6 wins Chicago Bulls: 6 appearances, 6 wins Detroit Pistons: 5 appearances, 3 wins San Antonio Spurs: 4 appearances, 4 wins Houston Rockets: 4 appearances, 2 wins Philadelphia 76ers: 4 appearances, 1 win Seattle SuperSonics: 3 appearances, 1 win Washington Bullets/Wizards: 2 appearances, 1 win Dallas Mavericks: 2 appearances, 1 win Miami Heat: 2 appearances, 1 win New York Knicks: 2 appearances, 0 wins Portland Trailblazers: 2 appearances, 0 wins New Jersey Nets: 2 appearances, 0 wins Orlando Magic: 2 appearances, 0 wins Utah Jazz: 2 appearances, 0 wins Phoenix Suns: 1 appearance, 0 wins Cleveland Cavaliers: 1 appearance, 0 wins Indiana Pacers: 1 appearance, 0 wins Milwaukee Bucks: 0 appearances Golden State Warriors: 0 appearances Atlanta Hawks: 0 appearances Sacramento Kings: 0 appearances Toronto Raptors: 0 appearances Oklahoma City Thunder: 0 appearances Charlotte Bobcats: 0 appearances New Orleans Hornets: 0 appearances Denver Nuggets: 0 appearances Minnesota Timberwolves: 0 appearances Los Angeles Clippers: 0 appearances Memphis Grizzlies: 0 appearances The Spurs and the Heat are the only markets ranked in the bottom half to win a Championship. And now just look at the rest of the skew. Top 15 market totals: 31 championships, 54 appearances Other market totals: 5 championships, 14 appearances Now obviously some markets have more than one team and some teams have moved and shit, but I think that should pretty much show why the medium and small markets have a gripe. |

Earlier today, NBA.com posted an excellent analysis explaining why the Nuggets, a team of "nobodies," are kicking so much ass. It's definitely worth a read/watch. |

Things ain't pretty for the Nuggets right now. Gallinari is out a month with a sprained ankle/bone chip Mozgov is still out with a bad ankle Afflalo and Nene have been out with various foot/ankle injuries, but both are expected to play tonight. Corey Brewer missed the last game due to the death of his father. No word on whether he will play tonight. Lawson has been playing hurt recently Save us Wilson Chandler |

But Lin is LEGIT bro. 53 points in two games son. The Lin-led Knicks have now won 3 in a row - which is even more impressive considering they played without Amar'e and Melo for 2 out of those 3 games. Amar'e will be out till Monday cause he's attending his brother's funeral, and Melo will be out for another week or two cause he injured his leg. BELIEVE IN LIN |

And the undrafted third-string Asian wins AGAIN, and this time against the Lakers. That's now 4 in a row Lin put up 38 points against the Lakers, the highest of any Knick this season. Oh and they played without Amar'e or Carmelo #swag |

Alright, so I pretty much despise Ron Artest (oh, my bad, METTA WORLD PEACE) but I gotta admit he is one funny nigga. This is from his pregame interview, talking about Lin. Q: Did the Lakers talk about him in the locker room? A: Do we talk about him? Yeah, we talk about him. We think he needs a better haircut. I don’t like that style. You’re in New York, the fashion capital. Change your haircut, OK? You’re a star now. Wear some shades. Shades, OK? Put down the nerdy Harvard book glasses. Put on some black shades, OK? With some leather pants. Change your style. Fashion. Q: Do you wear leather pants? A: No, I won’t wear them, but he should wear leather pants. He’s the type of guy who should wear leather pants, some nice shoes and change his fashion. You’re Jeremy Lin, for godsakes. You know what I’m saying? You know? Put down that law book, stop reading the New York Times and start reading the Daily News. Newsday, that’s the one. I like that one because there’s always color in that one. What else? Wall Street Journal. Get some swag. You’re in New York City. Put your hat to the back, too. Put your hat on backwards. Come to practice with your pants sagging and just tell them, 'I don’t feel like practicing.' Practice? You know? Practice? And wear an Iverson jersey. You know? Come to practice with a cigar. Lit. 'I’m Jeremy Lin.' You know? He should change. We're all excited to play tonight. It’s like the first time for everybody. Everybody’s excited. Kobe’s excited. He wants to get 50. He wants to welcome Jeremy Lin to his new level." More good stuff here http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/11838893/34788407 lol |

I'm not convinced that guy who has been sent down to the D-league a few times in the past few years and cut by a team is going to be the NBA's next superstar, at least not yet. But if it gets people to stop talking about Dwight Howard's trade bullshit or Lebron James for a few weeks, fine by me. I hope the guy keeps doing well. |

That's the point. No one would have given this guy a second glance if he was just your run-of-the-mill backup guard, but it's just the idea that he sounds so bad on paper that's been making him a sensation. Now obviously no one is expecting him to be a Derrick Rose, but having this humble, lanky, nerdy, Ivy League, undrafted, minimum salary, third string, 4-time D Leaguer, sleeping-on-his-brothers-couch-because-he-doesn't-have-his-own-home Asian in a predominantly non-Asian sport is one of those heartwarming underdog stories that the NBA (and the rest of America) just eats up. He's not a Dwight or a LeBron and likely won't ever be, but he's a superstar of a different kind. As an aside though, Lin's 89 points in 3 starts has been the best 3 starts out of any player in the league since 1976. #swag #linsanity |
