o league executives told QMI Agency Wednesday that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman presented a proposal during Tuesday’s board of governors meetings in New York to scrap the current format used by the league. Sources say under Bettman’s proposal, the league will have four divisions: Pacific, Midwest, East and South. It’s believed the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets would both get their wish to move to the East conference. The realignment is by no means final. It’s still in the discussion stages. Teams would play a balanced 82-game schedule with home-and-home against teams outside their division. The top four teams in each division would make the playoffs. The first round would be divisonal play, the teams would then re-seed for conference play. Bettman’s idea would not affect a East-West Stanley Cup final matchup. With 30 teams, one division in each conference will have eight squads while the other will have seven. Under the current format — two conferences and six divisions — division winners and the top five teams make the playoffs. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2011/06/22/18321961.html?cid=rsssportsslam!%20hockey Obviously going with two eight team divisions and two seven team divisions opens the door for a two team expansion, but I think the league has to stabilize a few problem franchises (Panthers, Coyotes, Blue Jackets) before even considering expanding. What do you guys think of the overall plan? I like the idea of doing a divisional playoff and then re-seeding for conference play. It makes division rivalries matter more. I'm also wondering what the new divisions would look like. It'll be difficult to balance those divisions and also keep travel costs reasonable. Plus you have to factor in time zones. You don't really want any teams more than one time zone away in the same division, because that's bad for TV deals. Some teams are pretty obvious - the California teams in the Pacific, the Florida teams in the South - but the high concentration of teams in the Northeast makes this a pretty difficult situation. A decent proposal I guess, but nothing about it really excites me. And like you said, a Intense anal traumaer proportion of teams are in the Northeast in comparison to other parts of the country, which would make this a bit hard to work out unless you stuck some random team in another division. Also, if Detroit and Columbus want to move to the East, two teams from the current East would have to move to the West, one of them being Winnipeg I imagine. I don't see any other obvious candidate. |

They don't necessarily have to keep the conferences balanced if they're going with two seven and two eight team divisions. The most likely scenario in my opinion is 14 teams in the West (Pacific/Midwest), 16 in the East (South/East); not unlike MLB's current NL/AL structure. |

Ah, that is possible, I forgot to consider that scenario. I'm trying to figure out what the South division would look like, and so far all I have is: Tampa Bay, Carolina, Florida, Washington, and then what? Nashville? Columbus? To make it work, you may have to throw in a New Jersey or a Philadelphia. |

New Jersey and Philly will probably have to be in the South when you look at the teams that are bound to be in the East: Toronto Montreal Boston Buffalo Ottawa New York I New York R Red Wings Which means for the South: Carolina Florida Tampa New Jersey Philadelphia Pittsburgh Columbus Washington So then Pacific would be Vancouver Calgary Edmonton San Jose Los Angeles Phoenix Anaheim And the final seven in the midwest: Chicago Colorado Winnipeg Dallas St Louis Minnesota Nashville |

If it results in the Avs and Jets being in the same division and Detroit moving to an Eastern division, I'd be a happy camper. My only concern is that if what Jason proposes ends up being true, the Avs' division will be TOUGH. Tougher than where we sit in the NW right now. It might be about time for a bit of a shakeup in the NHL, so I could see this happening. |

I didn't realize that the Jets will be playing in the SE division this upcoming year, which is going to suck for them, having to travel rather far very often. They'll need to do some re-organizing for sure, soon. |

The reason the Jets are staying in the Southeast is either because the above rumors of a major realignment are true or because they're waiting to see what happens with Phoenix. Because I give the Coyotes less than a 25% chance of staying in Phoenix after this upcoming season. |

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=6706113 Sounds like the realignment is likely to happen. We'll know for sure when the NHL Board of Governors meets this December (which is also when we will likely hear about the future of the Yotes). |

I could see a lot of fans complaining about not being in one of the 7-team divisions. I also don't like the idea of a divisional first round of the playoffs and could see it becoming unbalanced. I'd prefer a re-seed of East and West and taking it from there. |

The issue with that is it devalues the entire concept of a division. Divisions as they currently exist in the NHL and NBA are pretty much useless. People only care about conference seeding, and if that's really what's important why have divisions at all? |

I think they want the Avs in an eight team Pacific so that they can move Phoenix to Quebec or Hamilton (into a seven team division over there) and not have to worry about further realignment. |

And supposedly, it'll be several hundred dollars cheaper to buy a plane ticket and fly to one of the Jets' road games than to buy a single ticket here in Winnipeg. |

Unreal. I'll definitely be making the Winny/Avs game on December 27. I can only imagine how tough it'll be to get a ticket to the Feb 19th game. |

New alignment has been finalized. They are going with a four-conference alignment as follows: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto. Carolina, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington. Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, and Winnipeg. Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver. The new alignment basically requires seven or eight teams per conference. Right now both of the eight-team conferences are in the former Western Conference, but the new alignment is ready to accommodate the likely relocation of Phoenix to Quebec. All teams will play a home-and-away against every nonconference opponent. Teams in the seven team conferences will play one another six times, with three home and three away games. In the eight team conferences teams will play either five or six times per season on a rotating basis; three teams would play each other six times and four teams would play each other five times. The process reverses every season. The top four teams from each conference make the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs will put #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3. The winners play each other for the conference championship. The four conference champions will then be re-seeded based on regular season point totals for the semifinals, with the same 1v4 and 2v3 format until two teams are left to play in the Stanley Cup Finals. I think this is a great move for the NHL. It is going to help a lot of teams which were previously hampered by excessive travel, like Columbus and Winnipeg. It is also good for TV rights, as no one conference has any time differences between teams larger than an hour (the current format has teams that play in the Eastern Time zone making multiple road trips to the West Coast, which is bad for TV ratings). I also think this new format helps re-highlight the importance of divisions and divisional rivalries. |
