So I've had Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for some time now, bought when Direct2Drive was selling it for $5, but never played much into it because the framerate was absolutely atrocious with Frame Buffer Effects and Soft Shadows on, even on modern computers. The advanced graphics settings window also took a while to toggle on and off. But the time it took to figure this out...damn, it soon became obvious that this sort of thing is enough to drive some people to console gaming. I thought I had the cause nailed down there with the graphics options, but someone was gracious enough to gift me the Steam version. IT WORKED WITHOUT ISSUES, even with those two graphics options enabled. It was quite startling, but then I thought to compare the executables. The D2D one was really bloated for some reason, likely the DRM. So I replaced the D2D version's .EXE with a no-CD .EXE meant for retail versions. IT WORKED THERE TOO. No more performance problems whatsoever, and I don't need Steam to launch it. Would you believe that? Some DRM-ed executable fucks up the performance like you wouldn't believe...at least this doesn't happen with the other games I bought on D2D, like SWAT 4. |

Kotor is one of the best games ever made IMO, but the performance issues and glitches that occur even on perfect copies of the game are really annoying. In regards to the post, sounds like buying games from D2D is a very bad idea. |

Hmmm... I had framerate problems with KotOR as soon as I got to the first field on Dantooine... but my issue was one related to the type of video card (ATI 9600) and some error in the .ini config file. Lucasarts' help site even had a page for the specific issue. Anyways... I'm not surprised by DRM these days... it's in everything. The only D2D game I own is Fahrenheit Director's Cut. Only played it once and probably would pirate it in the future so as to not waste time trying to recover my account and redownload the game. That is... if I were interested in playing it again. Lol. Edit: Swype hates me. Edited by FOXHOUND, Friday Jun 17 2011, 05:01 PM.

That's the Disable Vertex Buffer Objects tweak. I left it at 1 (it was already set that way) despite using NVIDIA cards. |

I can run the game maxed at 60 frames with all effects on an 8800GT, 2.5ghz dual core, and 4 gigs of RAM. But that's only on XP. It runs like shit on 7. |

It's more common than you think. CDProjekt (However they spell that shit.) The securom atari forced their hand into basically knocked framerates in half. I was shocked they even did it in the first place considering their harsh no-drm standard. Then I realized they didn't publish it like the original Witcher but Atari did and they removed it in the first patch. |
