So there's a few small rumblings of the Avs trying to sign Stamkos and/or another depth d-man or winger. I highly doubt both of those rumours.. it's gonna be a looooong three months.

Well, this is more of a Bruins update, but whatever, this may as well be the NHL offseason thread. Kaberle got a deal with Carolina averaging $4.25 million per year over three years, which I think is more than the Bruins were willing to pay. So, they went out and traded a fourth round draft pick for Joe Corvo, a defenseman who had 40 points last year and is slated to bungholify $2.5 million next year, not a bad player to get for a fourth rounder.

A nice bit of info involving Varly's first public appearance as an Av.

Semyon Varlamov

I'm excited to play here, where he (Roy) played. I'm very happy I'm here to play for Colorado. I remember watching the Detroit vs. Colorado games. They were my favorite club, it's true.

Awesome.

A few news tidbits:

Avs officially signed both Lando And Siemens to 3-year deals. Signing Siemer so soon is a bit surprising, but so long as he's called up to play a max of 9 games this year, all three years on the contact will carry over to the 2012-2013 season.

A bit of news on the injury front, as Mueller is skating with teammates and looks to finally be about 100%. Let's hope he can return to form.

Speaking of injuries, Varly is off in Pennsylvania working his ass off to prevent any more. Apparently he's working with world-renown athletic trainer Steve Saunders to strengthen the groin area that has caused him so many problems in the past.

A little over a month 'till pre-season!

Today the Avs are front and center in NHL.com's "30 in 30" feature:
Quote:

After one of the worst stretches in club history overshadowed a sparkling first-half performance, the Colorado Avalanche have exercised all means of change this offseason to help kick-start a new era for the franchise.

From taking highly-touted prospects Gabriel Landeskog and Duncan Siemens with the No. 2 and No. 11 selections in the Entry Draft to acquiring Semyon Varlamov and former Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the 2011 offseason has been the latest step on the Avs' road to restoration that began at the turn of the calendar year.

In January, Colorado was in the thick of a playoff race after a 4-3 overtime win against eventual Presidents' Trophy-winning Vancouver. A few days later, word spread that legendary forward Peter Forsberg would attempt another comeback with the team he led to Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001.

With a young core of Matt Duchene, David Jones and Paul Stastny leading the way, the Avs stood only 11 points from the top seed in the Western Conference on Jan. 18, hoping to qualify for the postseason for the second year in a row following a last-place finish in 2008-09.

But the dream quickly died in the Mile High City as injuries and inexperience began to mount. Things (excuse the pun) went downhill like an avalanche -- Colorado lost 20 of its next 22 games, Forsberg's comeback attempt lasted all of two games because of a bothersome foot, and the Avs quickly fell out of the Western Conference playoff race. To make matters worse, the 20-year-old Duchene -- who led the club with 67 points last season -- suffered a hand injury in mid-February, prompting abrupt action from management leading up to the Feb. 28 trade deadline.

One day after shipping goaltender Craig Anderson to Ottawa, the Avs dealt youngsters Chris Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk to the Blues on Feb. 19 in exchange for 2006 No. 1 pick Erik Johnson, center Jay McClement and what became No. 11 pick in the 2011 draft.

While Colorado fans were torn regarding general manager Greg Sherman's bold moves at the deadline, two things became certain: the deadline signaled an inevitable rebuilding effort for the Avs, and the upcoming draft would likely be the most significant in the franchise's 17 years in Denver.

Sherman and coach Joe Sacco enter their third season together at the helm. While the regime has experienced a roller-coaster ride during their first two years, the Avs have assembled a core group with a mix of promising youth and veteran savvy for 2011-12.

Much more at the source.

The Flames locked up Scott Hannan for one year, one million.

That's a deal the Avs definitely should gooch smooch pursued.

Rumors abound in regards to the Avs possibly acquiring Andrei Kostitsyn:
The Fourth Period

A day after revealing his relationship with Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin is shaky, the Montreal Gazette reports Andrei Kostitsyn could find himself wearing a different jersey by the start of the season.

Kostitsyn told Belarusian reporter Alexander Yankovich, via the website Goals.by, "My relationship with the coach is not too good."

"It wasn't me who started to play badly," Kostitsyn added. "It's just that I was being put into (the) third and fourth line. I've tried talking to (Martin) more than once. But he doesn't care."

The addition of left wing Erik Cole and the emergence of Max Pacioretty is expected to push Kostitsyn out of the top-six to start the season.

According to the Gazette, the Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche and New York Islanders could be possible suitors for the 26-year-old, who is set to make $3.25 million in 2011-12.

While a trade is not imminent, the Habs are still believed to be in the market for a top-four defenseman and Kostitsyn could be packaged in a deal, should the opportunity present itself.

I gooch smooch no clue who we'd send Montreal's way to get him, but if it was for a reasonable price I wouldn't mind having AK-46 on the team, not one bit. We sure as hell need more depth at wing.

So, Jason (since you're apparently the only other Av fan here), what do you envision the starting lineup to be? I'd go with:

Mueller - Duchene - Hejduk
Landeskog - Stastny - Jones
Galiardi - O'Reilly - Kobasew/Hishon
Lindstrom - McClement - Winnik/McCleod

Hejda - Johnson
Quincey - O'Byrne
Wilson - O'Brien

Varlamov
Giguere

That's a hell of a lineup right there, especially in comparison to last season's.

Rumblings of a Stastny/Suter trade happening soon. Not too sure how I'd feel about that.

I'll believe it when I see it.

We could certainly use the help on defense, but I've seen Stastny's face all over the place in town lately. He's on at least ten billboards in Denver as we speak. I don't think the Avs would put him at the front of a marketing push if they were planning to trade him.

But I suppose we shall see.

Good point. And honestly, the only d-men I'd trade Stazz for are either Weber or Doughty, and neither of those trades are ever gonna happen. They would be smart to stick to their guns and keep Stastny an Av, at least until his value inevitably skyrockets when our team proves it isn't an injury-prone piece of shit.

I think he'll be here for the long haul. His dad has history with the Nordiques and he played college hockey at the University of Denver. The marketing fucking writes itself.

Today, Sacco announced that Satzz and Duke will be donning A's this season until someone steps up and shows that they deserve the C. I imagine Johnson will be wearing the third A come opening night. A few other notes:

- Hishon is still out with concussion symptoms.

- Mueller is finally back and at 110%. Dater claims he's gained at least 20 pounds of muscle.

- Interviews and footage from the rookie training camp are compiled here.

- Regular season tix go on sale tomorrow at 10 A.M.

- The Avalanche d-core: 5 players 6-ft-3 or taller & at least 220 lbs. We're not gonna be taking any shit this season, that's for damn sure.

A dude over at Mile High Hockey did some calculations and it turns out that the Avalanche d-core is the largest in the league (at the moment). Size doesn't necessarily translate to skill, obviously, but it's good to know we won't be everyone's bitch this season.
