Possible MLB Realignment?

Rumors have been flaoting around about a possible realignment of sorts which would greatly change the schedule and playoff system of major league baseball. The biggest proposal that's been floating around is that

1) Houston or Arizona move to the AL. I've read Houston moving is more likely, since it would create a Rangers-Astros rivalry of sorts.

and 2) No more divisions, just 15 teams competing for 5 playoff spots in each division. Top three seeds are in, next two are wild card teams that would play to get in.

I imagine this proposal would require the schedule to move back to a more balanced style, where a team plays all other teams in the league about evenly, unlike now where the schedule is weighted towards divisional games. Also, the odd number of teams in each league would necessitate an interleague game being played pretty much all the time, otherwise one team from each league would be left out.

Something to keep an eye on, for now, since nothing is imminent.

I saw a pretty retarded proposal on ESPN that would put the Rockies in a division with the Mariners and Astros (among others).

Note to ESPN: three time zones in one division is fucking stupid.

I always thought it was stupid that there were only 4 teams in the AL West while there were 6 and the NL Central. Houston should definitely make the switch

I honestly think it makes more sense for the Royals to move from the AL Central to the West, with Milwaukee switching from the NL Central into the AL Central. I've always thought of the Brewers as an AL team anyway.

Looks like we could see something in this regard relatively soon. Word is there will be two 15 team leagues, 2 wild cards, and interleague play throughout the season. I imagine that would be between the two teams that are the odd teams out in each league, but we'll see I guess. There is also a supposed "competitive balance tax" which should be interesting to learn more about when the detail emerge. Looks like baseball will avoid a labor situation like the NBA is experiencing, which is smart for both the owners and players.

Yeah, like I said in the NBA thread, I think the NHL and MLB have been scared away from major labor disputes. The MLB Strike and NHL Lockout almost killed each respective league.

The new MLB labor agreement was completed today. There will be no labor dispute for the MLB. It will be interesting to see how the changes will effect the league in the next few years, especially with the HGH testing, expanded playoffs, 15 team leagues, and the restrictions placed on higher spending teams.
