Fun new drinking game! Every time Joe says "strawman" or "ad hominem," take a shot and then kill yourself!

If we played a drinking game every time Joe and Jason got into a cat-fight, we'd be wasted 24-7.

Whoa...complaining/disagreeing for the sake of doing so? That is the pot calling the kettle black if I've ever seen it sir.
complaining and disagreeing are two different things. One happens when theres an actual attempt to find an element of truth. The other happens when you get pissed off.

Theyre about as similar as math and emo music
And yet you managed both for absolutely no reason...with an alarming frequency.

Do you do calculus while listening to My Chemical Romance too?

I don't recall complaining. I have absolutely no emotional investment in arguments, unless I'm trolling you.

"No, actually I was responding to something you said about me defending capcom, in any event, this argument is an obvious strawman"

What did I say about you defending Capcom, when did I say it, and why would you reply to it in the first paragraph of a reply to a post that makes no mention of it?

" Actually my argument was centered around the idea that I suspect most gamers have no problem getting online"

So you "suspect" that "most" gamers have no problem getting online, and then go on to berate me for "speculation"? Amusing. Few things:
1. It's still wrong to punish the people who can't get online, no matter how many of them there are.

2. Lack of internet access is not the only reason tying your ability to play single player games to an always-on DRM service is a bad idea. What happens if GFWL as a service goes down (which does happen from time to time)? What happens if your router takes a shit? Nameless has already pointed out similar scenarios.

"Nice appeal to ridicule. Having keys or physical copy requirements are bigger punishments as this drm allows one to have access to the game, even if it managed to get broken or stolen (two things you conveniently didnt feel the need to think of). I suppose anyone who has ever lost anything is retarded, right? Oh please."

Steamworks offers the same kind of protection with respect to stolen games, and it also doesn't rape you with DLC. If you break your games it's your own damned fault, and if you manage to lose 60 dollar video games, then yeah, you're retarded.

"You've said in the past that rereleases are the reason that it crashed, but you've NEVER demonstrated it. There is a very big difference. statements alone do not count as proof. Im also not denying that updates are the reason. Im not saying anything either way, simply pointing out that you have not proven anything. Also, hat I mentioned is about milking fanbases, not crashing industries."

Milking fanbases is what leads to crashes. Eventually fanbases get sick of the same old shit every year and they stop buying it. The key is to innovate and improve and stop re-releasing before that happens. It's what happened to fighting games in the late 90s, JRPGs in the early 2000s, music and dance games in the early part of this decade, and first person shooters as we speak. It shouldn't be a novel concept that releasing many games within a short period of time with very little change between each release causes the decline of a given game genre.

I don't think you're going to find any scientific, peer-reviewed studies with regards to why the fighting game genre declined in the late 90s. If you Google it, there are basically three things that come up:
1. Saturation
2. Decline of the arcades
3. Genre became too "hardcore" (Yoshinori Ono and Seth Killian are mostly the ones who claim this)

If we accept the fact that a decline did indeed take place, it isn't too much of a leap to say that it was for the same reason as the decline of the music genre (which is well documented due to the increase in media coverage now vs in the late 90s) or the JRPG genre (which is documented in every JRPG review since FFIX).

"Of all the people here, only you wouldn't see a problem with this." I assume this is a statement implying I would defend Capcom no matter what.

So you "suspect" that "most" gamers have no problem getting online, and then go on to berate me for "speculation"?
Its far easier to say the average gamer (especially PC) has reliable access to the internet than it is to say we know why the fighting game scene died. One happened in the past with nobody making a clear case why, and one is currently the way things are.

1. It's still wrong to punish the people who can't get online, no matter how many of them there are.
they arent being punished, they are being given a break. They will always have the rights to the game. Just like you say "if you lose a game its your own damn fault" ill say "if you dont have reliable internet its your own damn fault"

2. Lack of internet access is not the only reason tying your ability to play single player games to an always-on DRM service is a bad idea. What happens if GFWL as a service goes down (which does happen from time to time)? What happens if your router takes a shit? Nameless has already pointed out similar scenarios.
I dont know the frequency at which GFWL goes down, but if it happens a lot, I think Capcom should implement a way to get around that. If your router breaks you can plug into the modem, or say "its your own damn fault for not taking care of it"

I dont deny that there could possibly be better ways to handle the situation, im just pointing out that this isnt bad. If one can have their cake and eat it to, then they should. Why on EARTH would I actually want a system where if I lose a game thats it, when it doesnt have to be that way? If I CAN be irresponsible with it, and still be able to play then it only makes sense to support that service.

its equally plausible that people didnt want to play fighters anymore due to other styles becoming popular.

we also dont know if any of these are accurate, afterall, I think you of all people would be the first to say gaming journalism isnt good.

No, I was implying you were the only one here douchey enough to defend always-on DRM.

Nothing in the rest of your post changes anything.

People who have mame cabinets might build a machine powerful enough to install SF on it for the sake of it being an arcade game on PC that you can play with your fancy setup.

Also, the DRM doesn't allow you to save settings and progress in the game unless it can phone home. Picture this: You just got done with the most annoying fight you've ever played (had to retry it 7 times) but it allows you to continue playing the game now that you've beaten it. However, during the fight and unbeknownst to you, your internet connection goes down. You can't save your progress. You have to do the fight over again when your internet comes back up just so you can fucking save your game. Not cool at all.

This is just a hypothetical situation but shit like that could happen based on the system Capcom is putting in place.

Or even worse, people that actually do have this game installed on their mame cab probably don't have it connected to the internet to start with. Say goodbye to over half the roster.

If your internet "gets KOed" for a bit and you're doing something offline (training, challenges, etc.), you'll get to keep doing exactly what you're doing until you finish that thing, then you will be prompted to log back in to GFWL to complete/get credit for it and be able to save. So "intermittent" internet outages shouldn't affect your moment to moment experiences at all (again unless you were doing something online, which is out of our control).

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2011/may/27/sven-ssf4-ae-balance-working-intended-addresses-drm-concerns/

theyre also listening to criticism apparently, asking for people to suggest options they are more willing to deal with. I suspect this DRM may be changed in the end, though I would still like online activation to be linked to an account in some capacity.
