Let's start with this Amazon user review of Crysis 2, specifically this excerpt:

Quote:

...just hope Battlefiled 3 system files get locked and prevented from modding. Because I don't buy games for mods, I buy them for the campaign and ORIGINAL online experience. People want mods they can buy them from the devs where it is legit.

This is why we can't have nice things.

The things we used to have as free community mods are now payware DLC. Hell, they can still be right on the damn disc for it to be payware "DLC" that's really just an unlock code. I also shouldn't have to elaborate on how Doom, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, etc. were practically defined by the modding community.

Hell, since he's talking Battlefield 3, need I remind him of a little Battlefield 1942 mod we called Desert Combat? It was very popular years ago, to the point where the mod team was hired by DICE and helped develop Battlefield 2, at least from my understanding. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if it really did happen. Would we even have a Battlefield 2, let alone 3, if not for Desert Combat? (Oh, and this well predates a certain other WWII FPS frachise venturing into the modern day, I must add.)

Maybe this "review" is just a shitty trolling effort, but...ugh. That statement just went full retard, and it deserves to be called out for highlighting what's wrong with today's games.

Things aren't going to improve.

This is what the likes of Need for Speed, The Sims, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero/Rock Band, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Madden, Halo, WWE, and World of Warcraft have done to the industry.

Not saying that every game in the above series is automatically bad, but they've created a group of gamers that have no problem shelling out hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to buy the same game and DLC packs every year. There are absolutely still some amazing and original games out there, and not every major franchise is suffering from that level of fatigue, but the mainstream industry in general has given very little incentive to deviate from their lucrative milkage models. This is particularly true of major Western publishers like EA, Ubisoft, Activision and THQ but Japanese publishers like Square Enix and Capcom seem pretty happy to jump on the bandwagon.

Now we're seeing Ubisoft license out Ghost Recon, Assassin's Creed, and Splinter Cell for movies and the Rayman Rabbids for a cartoon show, simultaneously running the dance genre into the ground the same way Activision did with the music genre.

We're seeing Capcom give anybody with a dev kit the reigns to their biggest franchises. How many Resident Evil games are in development right now? 6?

I see a future of great indie PC games, cell phone gaming, and Nintendo consoles with shitty third party support but the same incredible first party games while the rest of the industry follows its current path until another inevitable crash, '83 style.

Why don't you go buy the third console version of Street Fighter IV, complete with (apparently intentional, according to Ono) god tier Yun and Yang? Oh, and don't forget the costume packs that will be available on release day.

But Jason how can you complain about them re-releasing the game when SNK did the same last gen with a new KOF?

I mean sure, their all amazing games but you cannot buttslut me that 50 bucks a year for the same game is somehow justified when the only people who can buttslut the obvious differences are hardcore fans like you and me?

I didn't buy all of the King of Fighters games, and for good reason. In the 90s SNK and Capcom were both very guilty of it, largely as a consequence of the fierce competition between the two companies.

Capcom, Arc, and SNK crashed the whole 2D fighting industry in the late 90s and early 2000s. All three companies released minor upgrades over and over again and it drove the dedicated fans away. KoF 2000-2003, while all excellent games, were very similar and as a result SNK has nearly died off half a dozen times this decade.

SNK-Playmore did the right thing with KoF XII. New engine, new graphics, new flow to the game. They just didn't bring enough characters (no Mai?) or extra modes. Hopefully XIII can be a return to KoF 98/99 form.

SNK has clearly learned its lesson, at no small cost to their wallets. KoF XI came two years after 2003, XII came four years after that, and XIII still isn't out on home consoles yet.

it seems like they avoid marketing like the plague.

Speaking of Capcom Sequel Stagnation, I'm thinking back to the Alpha subseries for a moment (probably because I'm more immediately familiar with it than SF III due to its Saturn presence).

I don't know about Alpha 1/Alpha 2/Alpha 2 Gold in terms of stagnation, but Alpha 3 (which is different enough to be considered its own game) didn't get any major revisions on home consoles. The only revisions seem to be a Dreamcast-to-arcade-backported version (Zero 3 Upper) and the handheld ports, though said handheld ports have the problem of not being compatible with arcade sticks (which all traditional fighters need due to their dexterity demands; at least they're still on platforms with physical buttons, unlike bloody SF IV iOS).

Why would this be the case? Why did the significant revisions only end up on handhelds, especially after how much they whored SF II?

They don't have the budget to market anything anymore.

They were actually fairly successful in the 90s. Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters, The Art of Fighting, Last Blade, World Heroes, Samurai Shodown... all of those franchises were lucrative at some point. Even with their Neo Geo consoles and games being extremely expensive compared to technically superior competitors (Saturn, 3DO, Jaguar, PS1, N64), the quality of their games kept them going.

SNK's biggest problem is that they failed to diversify. 90% of their business was fighting games, and when the market went to shit they had nothing to fall back on.

SNK had always made hardcore fighting games for the enthusiast audience. But between Arc, Capcom, and SNK (throw Namco, Tecmo, and SEGA into the mix as well) there were so many fighting games released between 1998 and 2004 that there really wasn't a market for them anymore.

Once the fighting game market had begun to dry up, SNK was bought out by a Pachinko company that purposely under-funded the game development aspects of the company. After a late 2001 bankruptcy Playmore stepped in (led by many former SNK employees) and bought everything up.

Unfortunately for SNK-Playmore, much of their history since then has revolved around the company trying to re-establish itself. They wanted to create new games, but lacked capital. So they tried to keep their old franchises going which really only served to further saturate the market. They've had some successes here and there, but they're still largely irrelevant in the mainstream industry.

Demand for KoF XIII arcade machines was reported to be far higher than SNK-Playmore had anticipated, so hopefully a home console release will allow the company some stability so that they can get back to what they've always done best.

Oh, and speaking of the Neo-Geo, it's said that part of its appeal from an arcade standpoint was that it was CHEAPER than a lot of competing arcade systems. Wouldn't surprise me since it was still the era of custom JAMMA PCBs for each individual game, save for the competing Capcom CPS that was also cartridge-based and generally just like a console in an arcade cabinet.

Of course, the person who said this was comparing it to the likes of SEGA, who isn't known for letting up on cutting-edge arcade hardware to begin with back in the 1990s.

SNK and SEGA had very different models, but obviously both were successful.

SNK's Neo Geo was a great move for a company of SNK's size and resources. On the other hand, SEGA was just coming off the Genesis (and thus had truckloads of money) and their home console failures never really did cut into their arcade business (which I imagine is due in large part to the influence of Yu Suzuki).

Also, this article is about a month old but:
http://shoryuken.com/content/king-fighters-xiii-info-console-release-4257/

Shoryuken says that SNK is waiting until after SSFIV AE releases to bring info on KoF's release date, but the game should be on home consoles by the end of the summer.

They also mention that they understand the importance of having strong netcode, and that online play can make or break their title. The console version is expected to have extras that the arcade version does not, but they were not able to say what would be added at this time. Balance, however, will be identical to the arcade version 1.1.

The only two infinites I am aware of in Kof XIII 1.1 are character pairing specific (Iori has one against Mai, Kim has one against Takuma; neither are practical for regular matches). The game is pretty balanced as well, but Raiden's dropkick could use a nerf.

Either way, this is good news for all. Every video I've seen looks leagues ahead of KoF XII, any BlazBlue variation, or any SFIV variation.

I'm going to play the filthy natural here, because I like both. Though I will be the first to buttslut you that I am pretty terrible at KOF. I haven't gotten to spend a good deal of time with them over the years, especially since Gamestop sold my copy of KOF12. (A preorder even, bastards) So I never did get it. But I will watch when this new one get's announced, I dunno if I could stomach a $60 purchase, but we shall see how I feel then.
