With the draft coming up, it seems about time we started one of these. The Patriots have two picks in each of the first three rounds, so we should have a pretty good crop of young players for this upcoming season, assuming there is one. We need to spend one of the first round picks, perhaps both (if we do not trade down, which probably will happen) on guys who can rush the passer, since an anemic pass rush was our biggest weakness last year, showing up versus the Jets in the playoff loss. A good 3-4 lineman would be nice, as combined with Wilfork and a returning Ty Warren would give us a pretty soild front 3. A good 3-4 OLB would also be very nice, but I've heard those are tough to predict in terms of future effectiveness with the draft. Otherwise, maybe a guard/center or running back with the rest of the picks would help, especially when the Mankins situation is uncertain. I've read some articles that imply that it might be time for the Pats to start looking for a replacement for Brady, taking Locker or something at the end of the first round, but I think that's crazy talk at this point. Outside of the knee injury a few years back (kind of an unlucky play too), Brady has always been very durable, and he just came off perhaps his best regular season. Of course, nothing can be assumed in the NFL, but Brady is only 33, and should have at least 3-4 quality years left. Maybe in a year or two, but I don't think it is time for that yet, though the Colts may want to start looking for Peyton Manning's heir soon. Also, I hope that the labor situation is resolved. A year without the NFL would suck, hard. |

The owners will appeal though, so I don't know how significant the victory for the players will be. |

Patriots took Nate Soldier, OT from Colorado with their 1st rounder today. I suppose this means that longtime starter Matt Light won't be re-signed. I wonder if the Pats will try putting Soldier at LT or try moving Vollmer to LT from RT, I guess time will tell. The Patriots traded their second first rounder for a second rounder this year and a first next year, which while good, is a bit frustrating, since the team has needs that can't be ignored, namely a pass rusher. I imagine, knowing the Patriots, they will also trade down from #33 tomorrow. I also saw that Denver grabbed Von Miller with the 2nd pick. He and Dumervil will likely be a major pass rushing force to be reckoned with for some time. Edited by Cube_of_MooN, Thursday Apr 28 2011, 10:02 PM.

niners drafted aldon smith. I guess its good because they needed a pass rusher. Everyone wanted a QB. I havent been paying attention, so I dont really have an opinion. |

The Niners are probably better off avoiding drafting a Qb this year, unless they make a run at Dalton in the 2nd round, who is pretty decent. Pretty much every QB in the draft has major question marks, even the top rated ones. I really don't think Newton is going to pan out as the #1 overall pick, questionable work ethic and accuracy do not bode well for an NFL quarterback. |

I really wish there was a way the niners could get Luck somehow next year (thats when hes entering the draft right?) but the only way to do that is to bomb out this season, I cant imagine too many teams passing him up, or asking for anything less than a right leg for him |

Yeah, even if Luck's production goes down this year he's almost certain to go #1, unless some other prospect comes on strong. If the Niners could get him somehow without bombing out, reuniting him with Harbaugh would be excellent for the Niners. |

Yeah, I don't think Cam Newton is going anywhere. Broncos made a good pick, but now we need to fill some holds. We need defensive tackles, maybe an interior offensive lineman, a tight end, maybe another running back. Our linebackers and secondary look solid, but the defensive backfield is getting older. Now we wait to see whether Orton or Tebow will start. |

Well, the Niners took a QB early in the 2nd round, Colin Kaepernick. Don't know anything about him, except that he played at Nevada. |

He's a spread/option quarterback. Don't think he'll amount to a whole lot. |

If that's the case, I imagine they drafted him as a project. Since they trade up to get him, giving up two extra picks to move up that high, they must like something about him. I bet they'll re-up Alex Smith for another 2-3 years and let Kaepernick develop, assuming there is something there. |

Ryan Mallet was still on the board. Don't understand why they didn't go that route. Also surprised that Buffalo didn't take Andy Dalton. I am of the opinion that he has a great chance to become the best quarterback from this draft class. |

Buffalo seems content to stick with Ryan Fitzpatrick from what I've heard. If they want to compete now and in the future though with NE, NY, and Miami, he is not the answer. Maybe they are waiting until next year to draft a QB. |

Didn't realize that the 9ers traded up with the Broncos. We traded the number 36 pick for the number 45, 108, and 141 picks. So one of our two seconds for their second, fourth, and fifth. Sounds like a good trade from Denver's perspective. |

Speaking of Ryan Mallet, the Patriots just took him in the 3rd round. Future heir to Brady perhaps? He'll certainly have at least 3, if not 4 years to develop, sort of like an Aaron Rodgers situation. Should be interesting. On the other hand, the Patriots have totally ignored their biggest need, help on the defensive front so far in this draft. They don't need two running backs, they need a 3-4 D Lineman and an OLB who can rush the passer, not running backs. The pick of a CB I am ok with, but unless they have something planned in FA, this Belicheck just ignored the team's biggest problem. I hope he knows what he is doing. |
