Goes to show the guy can still hit when his back is holding up. I wonder what how his career would have played out without all the back issues. |

He'd be a first ballot Hall of Famer, no question. Just imagine if he didn't have the back issues AND the Rockies didn't start using the humidor: http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/3709/todd-helton 2002 was the first year of the humidor and also the first year his back started acting up. If he retires after the 2013 season and stays healthy he should be at around 2500-2700 hits. That should be enough to get him into the hall. And I hate it when people pull the "Coors Field" argument when trying to deny him his HoF status. Yes, he has impressive home spits but nobody seems to say shit about Yas hitting .264 away from Fenway for his career or Jim Rice's career .320/.277 home/road split. Not to mention the fact that Helton still has a career .292 road average. |

Well, as a Sox fan, me bitching about home/road performance splits would be rather silly, considering Fenway is well-known as one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the league, but you know someone will bitch about it. If Helton can have a few more healthy seasons at reasonable levels of production, I think he'll have a shot at the hall. The guy hits for very high average, showed tons of power before and after a back condition cropped up (though the back condition did cause the power to wane), and as far as I know played great defense at first. What could potentially hurt him is that his biggest years were in the hright of the steroid era, but since there have been no rumblings about steroid use from him that I have heard of, that could actually help him compared to his peers. Something else that may hurt him is that the standards for first basemen making it in are probably tougher than other positions, at least in terms of offensive numbers. If he does make it I think it would be on a later ballot, maybe like a Jim Rice sort of situation. Time will tell, and the next two years could determine much. Random question: If Johnny Damon reaches 3,000 hits, will he have a shot at the hall? He's never been a dominant player by any means, but he's quietly inched his way to the point where he's 331 hits away from 3,000. That should be easy to do if he can find maybe another two years of consistent playing time. Of players with 3,000+ hits, only Rose, Palmeiro (steroids), Biggio (likely will make it in), and Jeter (will make it in) are not currently in the HOF. |

Regarding Helton's defense; he's the best defensive first basemen I've seen. He's had more than one Gold Glove robbed of him due to other players putting up better offensive numbers (which, unfortunately, is what happens in MLB). Biggio is way more than "likely" to get in. 3,000 hits punches your ticket to the hall whether you "deserve" it or not. As for Damon, he'll get in just by virtue of having played for the Red Sox and Yankees. Any fringe player from either of those teams is automatically in the Hall of Fame, while guys who clearly deserve it like Steve Garvey (2600 hits, 10X All-Star, 4X Gold Glove, 1 MVP, 1 World Series) get the shaft. |

The call was missed, but I don't understand why people are going crazy over it. I mean, the catcher had all the time in the world to tag the guy, but barely grazed his leg with the tag. I had to watch it in slow motion before I saw that the tag actually hit (and not completely miss everything), and even then you really have to strain. In fast motion I understand missing it. The call was missed, but the "worst call ever" people are nuts. |

It appears Ubaldo Jimenez is being dealt to the Indians for four prospects. Some of those prospects are supposed to be pretty good from what I've heard, so the Rockies are liekly setting up well for the future, if at a sacrifice for the present. Any thoughts on the trade Jason? And in Red Sox news, we acquired Rich Harden from the A's for probably one of our top first base prospects, Lars Anderson. With Buccholz's health uncertain, and Andrew Miller blowing up, the starting pitching help will help down the stretch. Anderson was never going to see the field with us anyway, with AGon Youk, and even Lowrie (when healthy) ahead of him. |

Jacoby Ellsbury hit he 2nd walk-off hit in a row tonight, this time a HR to deep center. He's having a monster season, and I never would have predicted he'd outproduce Carl Crawford by such a wide margin. Him, Pedroia, and AGon are probably the scariest 1-2-3 in baseball right now. |

The Rockies hit the waiver wire. They claimed Kevin Kouzmanoff from Oakland and he started today's game at third. The Rockies have also placed a claim on Houston's Wandy Rodriquez (9-9 with a 3.31 ERA this year). They have until 1:00 PM ET Thursday to work out a deal with the Astros for him. They might just be trying to make a last run at the playoffs. Go Rockies. |
