Gameplay and Spanish subbed interview

Based on what I've gathered:

RETRO

You use the retro sonic model.
You're limited to retro Sonic model's move set. (spin dash, spin attack and that's pretty much it.)
Levels are fully 2D side scrollers.
Level music is fairly close to classic only upped slightly with better sounding patches.

MODERN

You use the modern Sonic model.
You're limited to the modern sonic moveset (ring dash, boost, homing attack etc)
Levels play like Colors/Unleashed day levels
Music still retains the basic melodies but the remixes take more liberties with the patches to match the more modern feel.

Thoughts

From watching gameplay, it looks like the Hedgehog engine will feel better than Sonic 4 or Colors but not as good as the Genesis (anything's better than 4's broken as hell engine) as far as the 2D side scrolling levels go. Also, it looks like there are some liberties taken with the level design as well. Some of the memorable parts of the levels are in there but it looks like a reimagining of them rather than a straight HD translation.

It looks like you'll probably get multiple acts from each zone as I saw Sonic cross the signpost near the end of the video. You'll also get to switch back and forth between retro sonic and modern sonic in the menu.

Tails, Knuckles, Shadow have been confirmed to be part of it in some fashion but they have not said anything about them being playable.

New enemies which cause rips in spacetime (the gimmick for allowing modern and retro sonic both playable).

No mention of Robotnik yet.

Oh and the modern sonic gameplay for green hill looks fucking cool.

There are two things from Colors I want them to put into this game:
1. Power ups

Not necessarily the same power ups we saw in Colors. Maybe a few, maybe some from the classic games (elemental shields, invincibility), maybe some news ones.

2. Less linear 3D level design.

Short and to the point. Colors did a way, way better job than Secret Rings or Unleashed at incorporating exploration.

Colorado Rockies: 75-87, missed playoffs

Although, perhaps the presence of those red rings DOES indicate a focus on exploration.

Looks like the guys who wrote the story for Colors will be back for this one.

Also, Joystiq preview:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/sonic-generations-preview/

Guy complains about the same things he complained about with Colors, so I'll spare you and give you the highlights:
-Multiple paths through each level
-Frame rate looks steady so far

"The story conceit of Generations is that Sonic's friends have been pulled into "time holes," thus providing the tenuous (and unnecessary) justification for revisiting the older stages. It also means that Generations will explore specific eras of Sonic history. Green Hill Zone represents the Sega Genesis era, while other areas will represent the Dreamcast era and the "modern" era."

"Both versions featured something I'd never seen before in any Sonic title -- the ability to move into deeper planes. Sticking to the three-path formula of past games, this meant that the verticality of parts of levels was supplanted by depth in and out of the 2D plane, a bit like LittleBigPlanet. Before purists freak out: no, you cannot switch between planes whenever you'd like. Much like switching between different paths in a level, depth switching is handled at various intervals -- a hidden spring that pushes you in the right direction, for instance.

Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka is heading up the producer responsibilities, and fans will be happy to hear that this game has been given some extra time in the oven."

Gamespot preview:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/sonic-generations/news.html?sid=6308750&mode=previews

Highlights:
"The game will encompass the 20 years of Sonic's history and will be set across three defining eras: the 2D Mega Drive/Genesis era, the introduction of 3D in the Dreamcast era, and the modern-day HD graphics era. Instead of creating new levels, the developers have re-vamped a bunch of iconic stages throughout these eras in HD and have given players the choice of playing each stage in either classic side-scrolling 2D or in modern-era 3D."

"As usual, there is more than one way to complete a level (up high, middle-range, or ground-level, from what we could tell) which is good to know because some parts of the 3D levels look hard to complete."

Kotaku preview:
http://kotaku.com/#!5793017/sonic-generationes-is-like-a-dream-sonic-game-except-its-real

Highlights:
-Sonic Team is doing development.

"Sonic Generations will be out later this year for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A Sega rep told me there's no Wii version because the game is fully HD. Odd. Sonic's been a star on Wii. They must have something else planned... "

IGN preview:
http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/116/1162323p1.html

Highlights:
"In [Sonic the Hedgehog 4] Episode I, we didn't actually return to the old physics, and nor did we try to create something totally new," Iizuka says, "What we tried to do was respond to the voices we heard in the fans, and create something based on the feedback we were receiving from fans. On this occasion, with Sonic Generations, we've created a game with a totally different game and with completely different physics."

"...and there's a renewed emphasis on the verticality that's been missing from more recent Sonic games."

"Speed runs are actively encouraged, and hitting each checkpoint throws up a split time, telling the player how far down they are on their personal best time. Expect full online leaderboard functionality come the finished article."

CVG Preview:
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/298602/previews/sonic-generations-can-sega-turn-back-time/

Highlights:
"In this game we have a new mysterious nemesis who eradicates time and space. This forces the modern Sonic back in time, and he meets classic Sonic," Iizuka explains. "The storyline is that Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic collaborate together and go through an adventure through twenty years of Sonic's history."

""In this game we have the dream team partnership of modern Sonic and Classic Sonic, that's never been seen before," Iizuka-san says, confirming that gameplay will revolve around just the two blue hedgehogs - though former friends will return in some capacity (probably cut-scenes)."

G4TV Preview:
http://www.g4tv.com/games/xbox-360/65145/sonic-generations/articles/74271/sonic-generations-hands-on-preview-a-blazing-run-down-memory-lane/

Highlights:
"Also, while each level is inspired by the full range of Sonic games, their physical layouts are brand new across the board."

"On 2D maps, Sonic controls just as he did in the classic games. Using an Xbox 360 controller as a reference point, the A button jumps while pressing down and A performs a spin dash. This move has also been mapped to the X button, trading authenticity for simplicity.

On the 3D side, the perspective (on the GHZ map at least) jumps pretty frequently between an over-the-shoulder perspective and a more traditional 2D-style side view. Pressing A (again, on a 360 controller) jumps and also performs Sonic's mid-air homing attack while holding X activates boost, depleting an on screen meter in the process. This meter can be refilled by knocking out enemies and performing tricks in mid-air -- done simply by moving the two analog sticks in different directions -- after hitting a rainbow-colored jump ramp."

New info from OXM's interview with Iizuka:
Iizuka tells OXM that like Green Hill Zone’s new cave section, every classic level will feature a new visual element to keep things fresh. “One of the main rules Sonic Team has abided by during Sonic Generations’ development is that there would be no re-using of old assets or level designs – these are brand new courses with a stunning HD lick of paint.”

* When asked if Sonic’s friends will be making an appearance, Iizuka replied:
“Of course, because they’re a big part of Sonic history! But they’ll only be making cameos, be it as part of the story or in the backgrounds. Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic will be the only two playable characters in the game.”

Also, other Sonic related stuff:
-Sonic Stadium says Sonic Generations may be coming to 3DS (yes please)

-Mario and Sonic at the London Olympic Games has been confirmed for 3DS and Wii. From Wiki:
On the Wii, new events including soccer and equestrian will debut alongside previously existing events such as athletics, aquatics, and table tennis. The Wii game will introduce new "Dream Events", which are alternate versions of Olympic events taking place in locations from older games of the Mario and Sonic series. The 3DS version will have over fifty Olympic-based events in single-player and multiplayer.

Sounds like they're trying not to let the series stagnate, which is good. I think being a bi-annual series rather than an annual one will help to keep it fresh. I enjoyed the first two games for sure, but they're going to need to step it up quite a bit to get me to buy the third.

Finally:
Next month's issue of Nintendo Power is supposed to reveal a brand new Sonic game. Could be the official announcement of Sonic Generations on 3DS, or it could be something else.

Like I said, I actually enjoyed the first two Mario and Sonic games. As far as minigame compilations go it was pretty well done. Good selection of events, most of them controlled well, great character roster, nice graphics (for Wii games), four player support, Balance Board support, leaderboards.

Definitely the best "olympic" licensed games I've ever played, and among the best minigame compilations of the generation.

so it seems that there's still no mention of Robotnik, special stages or chaos emeralds. There have been mention of side missions that you can pick up along the way which can be done in either 3D or 2D. It's also been said that retro sonic will be act 1 of the zones and modern sonic will be act 2 of the zones.

I wonder how bosses will work. I wonder if they'll be at the end of act 2 or if they'll be their own act. I do know this, if there isn't a 1:1 ratio of zones and unique bosses I'll be a bit bummed out.

Looks like the 3DS version will actually be its own game with its own levels, just like Colors DS.

details from Nintendo Power:
http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=159038
* The Nintendo 3DS version is being co-developed by Sonic Team and Dimps.
* The director of the 3DS version is Tetsu Katano, who directed Sonic and the Black Knight.
* 2D side-scrolling gameplay for both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic.
* Momentum based gameplay and platforming are fully featured in the Classic Sonic gameplay.
* Modern Sonic plays a lot like the Sonic Rush games and Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colours.
* Nintendo 3DS version will have exclusive stages and boss stages.
* Green Hill Zone will be the only shared stage across all versions.
* Casino Night Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is confirmed for the Nintendo 3DS version.
* Story has some differences between the console and Nintendo 3DS versions, but will be fundamentally the same.
* Console version will have many characters, but the Nintendo 3DS version will only feature the ones who are integral to the story.
* There is no Wii version. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says this is because “The primary goal for the console versions of Generations was reimagining the series’s classic zones in vivid, high-definition graphics.”
* Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Launch Base Zone Big Arm boss fight is in the game, which suggests that stage is also in the game.
* Classic Eggman appears in the above mentioned boss.
* Exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version are challenged that you can unlock via StreetPass or Play Coins.
* The game also features an exclusive two-player race mode via local wireless connection.
* Modern Sonic stages take advantage of the 3D feature more than the Classic Sonic stages. An example shown and detailed is a part in the Green Hill Zone where Modern Sonic smashes through the bottom of a giant totem pole. The camera then moves to the front of Sonic and lets you see the rest of the pole collapse behind Sonic as he escapes.
* The 3D depth is also highlighted when Modern Sonic occasionally moves between the foreground and the background.
* Jun Senoue and his music team are working on the music for the game.
* Nintendo Power thinks the handful of tracks they’ve heard so far are “fantastic”.
* Special Stages are confirmed and are designed in Sonic Heroes style. As expected, you earn Chaos Emeralds from these stages. Whether or not Super Sonic will be your reward for earning all Chaos Emeralds is unclear right now.

Sounds like I'll be getting two versions of Sonic Generations.
