MegaGames: Angry Birds Boss: Nintendo Sells $49 Pieces Of Plastic Apparently, developing a Crush the Castle clone that happens to be tailored for smartphones gives these guys a lot of clout, like they can compete with the established development houses...and a certain someone's gonna be pissed about their vision of a pure digitally-distributed game market. |

no cell phone game has rivaled anything nintendo has done, bar tetris, because its tetris. itll be a while before smart phones can even compete with them. smart phone games dont offer good single player experiences like mario or zelda. |

Stuff like this happens all the time. Somebody produces a low-budget game that attains some popularity and suddenly decides that they're a "visionary" and decides to make self-empowering statements like this. Then either: a) all of their games afterwards fail to achieve the success of their first and they fade into obscurity. or b) in order to continue mainstream success, they begin doing exactly the sort of things that they criticized larger studios for doing. |

I don't think they (smart phone game developers) intend for them to. From what I've seen of phone games, they're mostly time waster puzzle games. easy to get a quick session in and be done with it while you're on the bus or whatever. |

Nintendo published games on the DS platform have sold over 288 million combined units, and that doesn't even include DSiWare. I think from a purely logical standpoint, the above would have to indicate that Nintendo has a pretty good concept of the value of a given portable game. |

This. Totally different markets. Anyways, this is just another situation of a small developer hitting the big time and enjoying wealth and recognition with a heavy dose of overzealousness. No biggie. |

I'll be surprised if this ISN'T newfound hubris. Rovio can't just keep milking the same Castle Clout/Crush the Castle formula forever. They'll have to do something different eventually or be left behind. Sure, some may accuse Nintendo of also milking their core franchises, but they do make some significant changes every now and then, not to mention having SEVERAL different franchises of different genres instead of just ONE. And as you all know, they're very different markets. Cheaper smartphone games generally don't offer as much and get abandoned quickly. It's also more of a "cost vs. value" proposition, and Iwata realizes that, knowing that core gamers will pay up for better games on hardware better suited for playing those games. (Sure, capacitive multi-touch digitizers and accelerometers/gyroscopes are fine for some games, but us core gamers like to play games that happen to work best with these things called physical, tactile buttons, which also have the side benefit of not obscuring the screen with fat thumbs.) |

For the most part, they are, but then there's the racing games (accelerometer/gyroscope steering isn't as nice as a twiddlystick, but not bad), the medieval fantasy Punch-Out!! takes with RPG elements and touchscreen controls, and perhaps the occasional turn-based strategy game. (Come to think of it, Final Fantasy Tactics was apparently ported over, and that's a core gamer's sort of game that ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE on a touchscreen device, if they overhauled the interface properly.) What is mind-numbingly stupid, however, is putting something like Street Fighter IV on such devices, where doing what you want is difficult enough WITH physical, tactile controls. |

I don't know if I lost your response or you lost mine. The words "gyroscope" "digitizer" "accelerometer" could be the names of some fancy ass smart phone games. |

I wasn't talking about titles of games. I was talking about input devices. The digitizer is the piece of hardware that makes a touchscreen a touchscreen. The accelerometer senses motion, while the gyroscope senses tilt (at least from my understanding). Are you asking me to use layman's terms? |
