SF4 was a pretty safe move, but the games are quite good. its balanced well and doesnt have too many short comings, and I think the ex cancel system is a good addition to the series.

Either that, or perhaps Bebop isn't as good or "deep" as everyone thought it was when they saw it on Cartoon Network when they were 13.
13!? You forget that I am older then you sir. (I would say I'm going to die first...but you seem to operate at a higher stress level...so I have a chance at winning that)

Anywho,

SF4 was a pretty safe game. I won't dispute it. But there are worse things in the world then that. SF3 was a fantastic game from any kind of technical standpoint but it's focus on all new everything was offputting to those who had been around SF for awhile. (or at least me) Primarily in the dept LOOK AT THIS ALL NEW ROSTER OF ALL NEW PEOPLE. They left me without anyone to be. I did not care for a single one of the new characters. They didn't add Chun-Li until later, which finally gave me one character I at least liked. (Though I would force myself to play as Ibuki...) I need more then one character I enjoy to care though.

The key...is moderation. I'm all for trying new things. But don't cash in all your chips and assume everyone is going to LOVE IT and ditch your history for it. I would have played SF3 a lot more if I had Cammy, Rose or someone to fall back on. SF4 perhaps played it crazy safe in this respect only adding a few....I didn't care for any of them. But I had my regulars to fall back on...(Then they added Juri Han who I took to with a fanatical cultish devotion, that girl was built for me specifically) I actually wouldn't mind a lot of SF3's gameplay features seeing the light of day though. The parry thing was pretty cool.

But there is at least one level you can call SSF4 a success on. It actually got me playing a game online for awhile...no other game has been able to do that.

I like SF3, but I understand perfectly why many(including top sf3 players) dont like it. It screwed up the zoning and spacing game a lot (which is everything SF ever was), fireballs were essentially rendered pointless for the most part. Even someone like me who sucks at parrying owns anyone who tries to throw em.

as for the cast of sf3, I think they did a good job (except Remy, who shouldnt exist). The problem is that sf3 is horribly unbalanced so you only see a few characters.
