The sad thing about that fighting game is that the pitiful story mode was the only funish part

The first MK game I played was on the SNES I think when I was ~4. I played this guy who was like 5 years older than me. He would pwn me every time, EXCEPT FOR ONCE WHEN I KICKED HIM INTO THE LAVA. That was an awesome day.

so the demo went up for non suckers this week. I just got done playing through as much of the ladder as it would let me with all 4 characters. I like that all the moves are available and listed in the moves list including the fatalities. The demo is really bare bones though. It doesn't even let you do 2 players. I didn't have a problem with the control scheme being laid out essentially like Tekken. It's kinda weird having a dedicated throw button but I can get used to it.

Gotta say though, Scorpion and Sub Zero's fatalities are the easiest to do. Reason being is that Mileena and Johnny Cage's fatality button input include a special move. To do Cage's fatality it's forward forward down back X. Well down back X is a flip kick move he does so it's hard to get the timing right to pull it off. Same with Mileena. However, Mileena was the only one who's stage fatality I could get to work.

The game is nice and fast. There is no run button sadly. Dashing ass blasts but I've always loved the run button in MK. I was able to string together some pretty neat combos that weren't listed in the move list under combos. The window for opportunity is there to do neat shit. It's not ALL dial a combo although that stuff is in there too.

Oh and I really like how they went back to mostly the classic button inputs for the special moves. When the games made the jump to 3D it seemed like they decided to change up the button inputs for seemingly no reason. Sub Zero's ice ball is down forward X. Scorpion's spear is back back square etc.

I also like that they ditched the lame fighting style system where everyone had like 3 different fighting styles and you had to switch back and forth between them. It made trying to get good with any more than 1 or 2 characters a chore. You only have 1 fighting style and one move set for each character. There is a stance button which switches the front and back attacks but I didn't really investigate how much it affects moves and combos and stuff. Casual playing didn't really show itself making a difference in any serious way. Should have replaced that button for a run button :P

Early impressions are really good. It's a stripped down, fast, fun 2D MK game. If you've never played any of the MK games on the 3D plane like Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon or even MK4, there's really no reason to now. You can go straight from Trilogy to this and not feel like you've missed anything of value.

Definitely going to be giving the full version a shot when it comes out.

Played the demo.

Movement and animations are smoother than I anticipated and so far there don't seem to be any major issues with hitboxes.

What's with the difficulty, though? I put it on Expert and haven't yet taken more than 50% damage in any fight with any character, having played about ten matches on said difficulty.

This game might not suck after all, but I am still going to wait and see how it looks after a few weeks.

I don't know about the difficulty. I put it on easiest just for the sake of fucking around with the system, moves and fatalities then I put it on normal once I got how everything worked. It's acceptable considering I'm fairly poor at fighting games in general.

If this is as hard as the single player gets this is seriously bad. I am now able to get a flawless victory every single match regardless of characters.

I foresee a serious problem with any sort of competitive play here when I can get at least 60% damage on an initial combo with every character on the highest difficulty after playing for less than a few hours.

Also, the game doesn't always seem to respond to inputs. Specifically, the throw command seems to be wonky in its responsiveness.

I once again change my outlook from hopeful to "expecting it to suck".

the computer AI has no bearing on competitive play.

No, but the damage output does. Being able to start off any fight with a 60% combo does not lend itself well to competitive play.

The damage output is too high, just as it is in MvC3.

Further, the more I play the game the more sluggish it begins to feel. I was initially impressed, but that feeling wore off rather quickly.

Yeah, games with damage output thats really high end up being kind of frustrating.

But we'll have to see how people play defensively.

The X-Ray meter is fucking awful. Let me see if I can explain the way it works:
-You gain meter quickly by taking damage, unless you block. If you block, you will still take (lesser) damage but it will fill your opponent's meter instead of yours.
-Basic punch/kick combos do not fill meter.
-Taking damage fills meter quickly, unless you block, which again fills your opponent's meter
-Special attacks build small amounts of meter, but not nearly as much as taking damage

There must be some reason for a design choice like that, but it escapes me at the moment.

Also, the dash only seems to be useful for jumping into a combo or canceling out into a block. In any other case it is actually a hindrance. A run button would have been way better, but they wasted that with a "change stance" button instead.

There are breakers for combos, but just like the throws the detection seems just a little unreliable. It works most of the time, but sometimes it just won't.

I dont get this either, but I suppose its meant to be kind of like a revenge meter in SF4. Im not too into that though.

played more of the demo. Had some buds over and actually got 2 players going. Twas fun. I think they intentionally made Scorpion's fatality easy to do since your average dude is probably going to pick him. Sub Zero is kinda slow so you have to be good with combo-ing with him. One dude kept using Mileena and roll-->uppercut combo but using the ice clone works as a nullifier.

It's fun to play. When I'm playing MK I feel like I'm actually in control of what's going on. When I play Marvel I feel like I'm actually just generating a random fireworks display.

I still wasn't able to figure out the purpose of the switch stance button as it seems to have no bearing whatsoever on the moveset if you're in normal stance or reverse stance.
