I'm going through my game library and my wish list and evaluating each game on it's replayability. The way I'm going about it is pretty strict. I do not take online capabilities into account when evaluating replay value but I do take local multiplayer into account as that's more pertinent to my gaming style. I also take into account if the game gives you some sort of feedback based on your performance via a score, ranking system or whatever.

I'm finding that most of your standard action/adventure games have very low replay value. I usually end up playing through the story mode once on normal or easy difficulty and then shelf the game. I rarely ever go back to them to play through it again. Now those games are some great games and they all have amazing moments the first time I play them. However I just never feel the urge to go back and replay something that's very story driven, no matter how good the gameplay is.

Your arcade style games have the highest replay value. They are based on some sort of performance-grading metric whether it be time, score, ranking, whatever. I will play a shmup for 100 hours learning the intricacies of the levels to learn how to get a better score but I stopped playing Uncharted 2 because I got 14 hours into it and it still wasn't over.

I think I'm onto a new policy for myself. Don't buy story driven games new. Get them cheap, beat them and sell them off since I won't be playing it again anyways. And on the flipside, buy arcade style games with lots of replay value new. Send a message with my wallet that there is still a market for killer arcade style gaming experiences and support developers who cater to that market.

Thoughts? Dissenting opinions?

I also buy single player games after they get cheaper.

Sending the best message ever to devs: make it MP or fuck off.

I refused to buy the new need for speed because it's online multiplayer only.

Too much reading/quantification. Replay-value is something that I value highly (even if I enjoy it the first time, I generally like to be able to enjoy it a second, third or tenth time), but I don't think it can be quantified. It varies from person to person, and from game to game. So it would be impossible to come up with any sort of meter to judge or rate games based on replay-value.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

My method for replay is not nearly as advanced. It's usually a 'you know what I haven't played in a while...?' scenario. Most of the time simple nostalgia is the key factor. I have no real policy that dictates what I buy... it's usually my standard ADD 'ooh shiny do want' that influences my purchases.

I think it absolutely can be quantified but I also think that it would be different from person to person as you said.

I usually get the hot new MP game as soon as it hits shelves (MW2, Halo 3). Single-player only games I usually wait out so the price goes down (Mass Effect 2, Mirror's Edge) unless it's one of those game that I just HAVE to have immediately (Assassin's Creed 2).

Also, the longer the game the lower the replayability, unless it's a REALLY good game I probably won't play through it more than twice.

I'm not even really down on single player only games. They can have a multiplayer component in them (local) and I'd be more apt to get it new. But if all it has going for it is a story mode, I just won't end up playing it more than once and that's just not worth 60 bucks for me.

replay value for me is about how good the game is, not necessarily about whats left to accomplish.

if the game isnt good enough to beat more than once, it probably wasnt good enough to buy in the first place imo.

ill play a game a second time through like a person likes to rewatch movies

Pretty much agree here.

I don't own any games that I couldn't see myself playing through again. Doesn't mean that I actually will replay them all, but I probably wouldn't have bought it in the first place if I didn't want to leave that possibility open. I'd just borrow or rent it instead.

I can't replay a game like I rewatch a movie because it takes too long.

Depends on the game. Second and third playthroughs are almost always a lot shorter than the first.
