The Phoenix Coyotes are in a shit ton of trouble right now. The future of their team in their current Glendale, Arizona home is looking pretty bleak. It's a bit of a clusterfuck as there are a lot of legal issues that need clearing up, but it appears that the last hope of keeping the team there is about to fall through. True North Sports Entertainment, a Winnipeg-based group which owns the local arena, has been renovating and has told the NHL that it will purchase the Coyotes if the league is unable to keep the team in Glendale. It looks like about an 80/20 shot that the Coyotes are relocating. But even if they don't, it appears the NHL is prepared to take control of the Atlanta Thrashers. If they Coyotes are not able to move, the Thrashers are next in line. Their owners have been trying to sell their team since 2005, but a minority owner of the team blocked the sale and the resulting legal battles combined with piss poor attendance and TV ratings have put the Thrashers in a tough financial situation. If either franchise were to relocate, they would resume the franchise name and history of the Winnipeg Jets. The Coyotes would probably be the ideal choice due to the fact that they came from Winnipeg in the first place, but I doubt Winnipeg fans would complain about getting either team. |

Anyone interested can follow this as it progresses here: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=871985&page=31 I'd say that it's nearly a sure thing that the Coyotes are relocating to Winnipeg. I had to qualify it with "nearly" because it is still possible for them to stay, but it would take a series of incomprehensibly stupid events to happen in exactly the right way in a very small amount of time. |

The funny thing is, I still have my doubts. Supposedly there are rumours floating around that they are coming back, but they won't be the "Jets" nor will they share the same jersey colours. And everyone here is getting so excited, and it hasn't even been confirmed yet. That, and I don't care. |

I would bet money that Winnipeg will get a team next season. The NHL currently has two teams that are in dire financial straits (Atlanta and Phoenix), and Winnipeg is the only market that can take a team on such short notice. The only other possible destination would be Quebec, but their arena isn't built yet which would mean millions of dollars in renovations to the old Colisee, which is going to be torn down anyway. If the Coyotes deal in Glendale falls through, and I'm 99% sure it will, then the Yotes move back to Winnipeg. If by some miracle the Coyotes stay, Atlanta's owners will sell to True North and the Thrashers will move to Winnipeg. As for the Jets name, I am pretty confident it will return as well. The brand there is too strong. |

So, the city of Glendale has agreed to cover up to 25 million dollars worth of losses for next season if the Coyotes stay another year. To me, this says that the Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. It makes no sense for the NHL to continue to own the Coyotes in Glendale when they have absolutely no realistic ownership prospects and they lost 37 million dollars last year (which means the NHL Board of Governers are on the hook for the differential between the actual losses and those Glendale pledged to cover). The NHL can begin looking for new relocation prospects on December 31 of this year. I reckon at that point Quebecor will jump into negotiations and the Coyotes will play in Quebec in the 2013 season. The Thrashers, on the other hand, have no local ownership prospects and their current owners have no interest in keeping the team. Also, their non-relocation clause expired on January 1 of this year. Many reporters said that the Thrashers ownership, True North, and Gary Bettman had a conference call yesterday. I expect an announcement between the end of the week and the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. |

The end is near: When asked on Hockeycentral at noon previously, Commissioner Bettman wouldn't comment on the agreement, but a source told Sportsnet that "Gary has promised Winnipeg a team for this year". http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2011/05/16/shannon_winnipeg/ An NHL source confirmed with Sporting News that True North Sports and Entertainment is in high-level negotiations with the Atlanta Spirit to buy the Thrashers and then move the team to Winnipeg. "I think it's going to move pretty quickly," an NHL source said. http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2011-05-17/thrashers-to-winnipeg-on-fast-track----as-is-conference-realignment Some are suggesting there will be a sale agreement by Friday, but then, we should all know from the Phoenix experience these stories have a way of generating false deadlines. Still, the NHL has a schedule to put out by June 15, so time is short and reports are suggesting the math on including Winnipeg in the mix is being computed. http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/article/992423--cox-nhl-retreat-from-atlanta-far-from-strategic Levenson would not confirm Monday if he has been given the go-ahead from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to negotiate with possible buyers who would move the team. "I can't comment on that," Levenson said. "I just can't." http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/40344-Thrashers-to-Winnipeg-Waddell-says-team-exploring-all-options-in-search-for-buyer.html producer for several hockey shows on Sirius XM radio tweeted "Anson Carter, and possibly Hollywood Director/Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Rapper Lil Jon involved in keeping team in Atlanta!!" A manager for Lil Jon reached by 11Alive said, "At this time's [Lil Jon] is not ready to comment". The producer later tweeted: "they were talking....but nothing will get done. Team will be in Winnipeg next year." http://www.11alive.com/news/article/191191/40/Lil-Jon-Bruckheimer-named-in-latest-Thrashers-rumors |

I just hope it doesn't turn into yet another NHL franchise. The people of Winnipeg want their cake, but I'm not sure they'll want to pay for it (Winnipeggers are some of the cheapest people in the world). The Manitoba Moose are in the playoffs and doing well... and the games aren't sold out (they have sold out on many occasions in the past). |

The Moose are always either first or second in their league as far as attendance goes, and this season is no different. I am no hearing rumors that the team will likely be called the Manitoba Falcons, but they're going to sell out every game for at least five seasons regardless of what they're called. |

Looks like it's finally time to buy a Jets jersey.. but man oh man do I feel bad for Thrashers fans. I couldn't even begin to comprehend the Avs moving, so I feel for 'em. After the dust settles, though, it should be fun to watch the Avs play their first game against Winnipeg and possibly build up something of a rivalry if they end up staying the in NW division.

Avs are more than likely going to the Pacific, which would push Dallas to the Central. Winnipeg would slide into the Avs' spot in the Northwest with either Columbus or Nashville moving from the Central into the Thrashers' spot in the East. Also, as mentioned above, the team may not be called the Jets. Might want to hold off on that jersey. |

Winnipeg fans who've been buying Jets merchandise for the past 16 years are going to be pissed if its anything but the old name. I wouldn't doubt they would lose a lot of business if they aren't. I for one liked one of the suggestions that was in the paper yesterday: The Winnipeg/Manitoba Phoenix. Not only a shot at the Coyotes, but the whole imagery of "rising from the ashes." There really are only three possibilities in my opinion: 1. Winnipeg Jets, for obvious reasons 2. Manitoba/Winnipeg Falcons, because it's the most common rumor (and the likeliest choice) 3. Manitoba Moose, because True North has spent the better part of a decade building the brand |
