I'm doing some upgrading for my desktop, and don't have much money to spend (I found a 3.0GHz P4 for $15 CAD, which leaves me with about $35 left, and maybe $50 if I need it). I'm still looking for a GPU and RAM. I have an AGP 2x/4x slot and currently have 512MB of PC2100 DDR-266 RAM (the other 512 was no-name PC3200, and is most likely bottlenecking the system; and only have two RAM slots).

I'm looking to at least get a single 1GB stick of RAM, and hopefully a 128MB+ DirectX 9.0c compatible GPU. I need some help in locating these items for purchase online, as eBay and newegg aren't fulfilling my budget.

And yes, I know what I have is a piece of shit, but its all I have, and as long as I can get Oblivion running on it (at a playable framerate of at least 15fps), I'll be happy. Down the line, once I have some savings, I'll look into getting something better.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

If ya want I can see what I have laying around to donate to the cause. What's the wattage of your power supply?

I would very much appreciate that. I would be in your debt if you had anything worth my while.

And its 300W.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

I think the best card my computer is able of supporting is the ATI Radeon X1300 Pro. And nVidia cards don't seem to support AGP 4x at all.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

You sure your PC can support more than 1GB of memory? Check the model out on crucial.com to see. Most likely it can, but I would still check.

Sorry to say, but DDR memory is very expensive. A 1GB stick is probably going to take up a majority of your budget unless you can get it from a friend.

eBay is probably your best bet for both of these items.

The motherboard's specifications list that it can support up to 2GB. And yeah, I've been finding RAM to be ridiculously expensive. Even for stuff that is coming on 6-7 years of age (in terms of tech at least).[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

That's some old hardware...

I can offer an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB (complete in box) for the graphics card.

RAM-wise, I don't have any 1 GB DDR1 DIMMs to offer. (Certainly not the ones in my backup desktop.)

Dude, anything would be fantastic (since it would be better than nothing). I would appreciate anything greatly. I can definitely pay shipping and reimburse you whatever you think its worth.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

No one makes DDR anymore, so the supply is slowly dwindling. Combine that with the fact that computers that use DDR memory still make up a significant percentage of the market, and it's easy to see why it's so expensive.

I've got a spare PCI express mobo that has a Sempron(yuck) CPU. I also have a Radeon 4560 512MB to go with it. I'd have to test the mobo to make sure it works fine, cause it's been in a ESD bag in my closet for a while now. If you want your welcome to it, I think shipping would be around $10 or so. I'll have to find some DDR2 ram to go with it. You'd have to reload windows on whatever PC you'd put it in. If you need any software I could send it as well. Might as well load up whatever freebies I can...

I'm aware of the reasons behind, it's just strangely counter intuitive.

Holy shit you guys are awesome. I think I may have to go with SgS's stuff, and I would owe him BIG TIME. I'll get my shipping info to you sometime tomorrow. Though, I guess I just wasted $15 on a Pentium 4... >_>[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

Don't get to excited, at least not yet lol. I still have to test the mobo to see if it works. I found a 2GB stick of DDR2 hanging out in my trunk, so I'll have to test it as well. I should know by tomorrow if everything works.

Heh, its better than having nothing... even if it doesn't work. :P The idea that I could actually play games at a decent level (I'm even stuck on low in Minecraft, and it still is choppy) brings a smile to my face.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

Does $15 shipped for the 9800 Pro sound good, then? Might as well send it over to someone who will make use of it.

At the very least, you should be set for anything 2004 and prior, perhaps up to 2005. (Just depends on your graphical detail/framerate tolerances. Everyone here probably already knows that I like my framerates high and smooth, so what I may consider unplayable could be playable enough for someone else.)

EDIT: This is what happens when I just so happen to overlook crucial details in the thread. The Sempron and HD 4560 definitely sounds like a better way to go.

Hah, you paid good money for a Pentium 4? I've got a whole box full of them, and so does everyone I know.

Neither do I.

Of course, I always thought Pentium 4/NetBurst was a ridiculous fail of an architecture compared to AMD's offerings at the time (roughly the Athlon XP/64/64 X2 period), but Intel used their position in the market to keep AMD down.

At least they learned their lesson and have been on a roll ever since Core 2/Conroe/Merom.
