Buck is going to win the Senate race. Hickenlooper is governor.

It looks like a 51/49 or 52/48 Democratic majority. The Republicans need Dino Rossi to overcome a razor thin deficit and take Washington.

Investments can and often do lead to prosperity, especially with education which is disastrously underfunded in many areas of the country. This a big reason why other much more collectivist countries are producing more engineers and scientists than we are these days.

I don't really think that is a fair assertion. For instance, the US secondary education system has some of the highest funding levels per student in the world, but US high school students are some of the lowest performers on international math, science and reading assessments. Throwing money at this problem hasn't made it better.

And there is are a lot of programs that are sponsored by our government that serve effectively no other purpose than to provide politicians a way to pander for votes. And there is just gobs of bureaucratic overhead that can be reduced to allow a the government to run more efficiently.

There are a lot of things that our government does that it does not need to be doing, and there are a lot of things that it needs to be doing well, that it does half-assed

I pretty much agree with you.

However, the inner city schools drag down our "collective grades" if you will. One big reason (not the only reason, theres a whole host of them including our shitty culture) is that the schools are funded via property taxes in most states and are left underfunded. Also, the southern states are notorious for bringing down the average grades for the nation because the politicians simply dont want to fund education, so you often end up with minimal taxation and students using books from the 70s.

The only rational solution I see to this is a national education tax (I say rational to imply 100% free market education should be left out)

The only thing I would add to what you say is that there are a lot of things our government should be doing, that it simply doesnt.
