I use Monster Cables and I'm okay with using them. They have good and sturdy gold connectors that haven't fallen apart on me with years of abuse. They're nice and THICK so constant twisting and tangling doesn't damage them (yes I'm aware that a higher cross-sectional area has higher resistance but I'm not talking about the wire, I'm talking about the meaty material they use to insulate it).
So I guess my point is durability is key here. I'm constantly plugging, unplugging, yanking, stepping on, twisting, tangling and tripping over my cables. It just comes with the territory (or my clumsiness?). But the cost of buying a cable that's obviously overpriced is less to me than the cost of constantly buying/making cheap cables and replacing them.

But the point is that you're paying seven to eight times as much as a cable of similar quality when you buy anything with Monster's name on it.

Just don't allow yourself to be stuck as a root note player.
Never. I may not be able to handle myself on a guitar, but that won't stop me from still playing melody. I've always loved groovy bass solos.

And that shit you posted was amazing.

--

Also, I need a small recommendation. I have about $150 in value/cash to spend on a bass (from my guitar I will trade in, and cash I'm willing to spend), and have a Peavey Solo amp (from my guitar) and was wondering what kind of bass I should go for (looking for something simple, that sounds decent, and is flexible in many styIes, around rock of course) and whether the amp should be "sufficient" (I'm not in the market for "good" right now, I just need the instrument) or if I should try something else?

Effects are something I would like to look into as well, as I've always been interested in playing with sound (and have always loved that overdriven guitar sound), and not necessarily grinding out a cover, but looking for something unique within my own talents.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

ibanez basses are cheap and are typically good
ibanez probably makes the best cheap basses

you're not going to get something amazing but it should hold you over
you can use a guitar amp, but just turn the bass all the way down

I agree that Ibanez is your best bet - my main bass has always been an Ibanez. They are comfortable to play, light weight, and even the cheap ones sound decent. They are pretty versatile, enough to play almost any style. I would avoid brands like Rouge and Squire if possible. They are bulky and sound like ass.

As far as effects go I typically don't use any. I dabbled with a bass wha for a while, but got bored with it. My amp has builtin effects, but only I played around with em at practice and never used them live(somewhat cause theres no floor pedal for my amp). The only effect I like is distortion. A distorted bass at the right level can sound sooo aggressive, and at the same time not be ridiculous. There are times when I hear a distorted bass during a song and it fits so well that I grit my teeth and smile, while thinking hell yeah!. It can go horribly wrong though, as I've seen/heard a distorted bass played like a guitar, and it completely ruins it. Guitar and bass are different instruments, and should be treated as such. I can technically play a guitar, from a mechanical standpoint, but I don't have a 'feel' for it. Bass however, I 'got' from day one and have had no trouble learning.

You definitely want to get a proper bass amp at some point. Even if it some cheap $100 amp. You can play through a guitar amp, but keep in mind that it is not designed to handle those lows and you can blow it. Trust me, I've trashed a couple of guitar amps in my day.

Alright cool, thanks. I'm definitely not looking for much right now, just a start, and if I enjoy it, I'll upgrade in time. I am actually quite glad I didn't invest serious money in a guitar when I got one. I'm also definitely already thinking of ways of playing bass melodically instead of just being the guy who strums a single string up and down on three notes for the entire song.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

You can usually get a bass starter pack for around 150 that includes a bass amp with it. Ibanez makes them

I really dig Fender Jazz basses. It's versatile with its sound and it has a nice punch to it. Zar and I actually both got the Squier Vintage Modified J-bass and I think it's a pretty damn good beginner bass. Normally I would never recommend Squier but I found the quality of this bass to meet and even exceed most Fender Standards.

Plus here's an amp and everything else you'll need to get started for less than $100. Acoustic amps are okay.

My very first bass was actually a $250 Ibanez, but I traded it in for the Squier and I never looked back. Turned out to be infinitely better, for the shit I play at least.

$15 or so for a Monster cable is a good deal to me. I know that Monster is an evil company, and that the cables are made from the melted gold and copper of Jew teeth and are hand spun by Hitler using the hellfire dried skins of babies for casing. You know what?

I don't care.

My Monster cable has been champ since the day I bought it, so I will continue to use em. That said I will never, EVER buy one at full retail. I'd rather buy them second hand from eBay or Craigslist, cause then I will pay what they are worth and Monster will not benefit from the sale.
