So I recently acquired a Epiphone SG 310 LH from eBay for $140 shipped. Yeah it's not a great guitar, but I just wanted something cheap to mess around on cause I didn't feel like dropping $1200 on a Gibson that might get played once a week. Also since they retail for about $260 new I think I got a good deal. I may end up tossing some EMGs in it depending on how bad the stock pickups are. If they are anything like I remember my SG Special being, then that will happen. So the question is that now I need a small amp. Any suggestions? I was thinking of a small Line 6 combo amp or something to that effect. I don't want to spend a whole lot; I'm looking in the $250-$300 range. I had a Fender amp at one point, and remember the clean being great but the distortion was weak so I'd rather not go that route. I also don't want anything dirt cheap, like Squire or Rouge. |

I've always loved the way randall amps sound but I dunno how easy it would be to find a small combo randall amp locally. Do you care if it's tube or solid state? |

I lean towards tube, but solid state would be ok. It doesn't have to be spectacular, just decent. I've never played on a Randall. My favorite setup that I played on was my friends triple rec Mesa stack. Was awesome, but I'm not spending that kind of money on a minor hobby. I'll probably hit up guitar center and baily bros just to get a feel for whats out there. It's been quite a while since I've played guitar so I'm a bit out of the loop. |

randall stuff just sounds good to me. I will say that if you do look at a line6 you'll get a lot of computer stuff in it as well that would make a floor unit close to unnecessary (not totally though because of usability). |

Yeah that's kinda why I was looking at a Line 6. I'd rather have all the effects built in, so I don't have to buy a bunch of stomp boxes and pedals, though I may get a wha. I will also be using headphones a lot, so it doesn't have to be a million watt amp either. |

Don't go fender. Fuck fender amps. I had a small ibanez amp for a while and that shit was dope. Currently I have a line 6 that is pretty damn decent. Sounds great and has effects (though I don't use em really) It's pretty big, but the price was right. So yeah. Marshall makes a nice amp too. |

Yeah I'm not a Fender fan. The only reason I had one is cause it was a Christmas present(about 7 years ago). Shortly after I picked up bass and that's where my musical hearts been. What model Line 6 do you have? I was thinking of maybe a Spider IV 75watt, or maybe even just a POD. I don't plan on playing any gigs, just some noodling and maybe some recording. I like Ibanez basses, I have a 4 and used to have a 6. Sold the 6 cause I never played it. Also had a Fender jazz 4 which was garbage. Marshalls are nice. I have a friend who has a full Marshall tower that sounds badass. I don't remember what head he was using but I know the cabs were 1960a's w/greenbacks. |

if you care about your guitar, please dont use emgs. its like child abuse. Seymour Duncan or Dimarzio are the only companies that matter with pickups, and passive is better than active. A company or brand that makes guitars should typically be avoided with amps, and i also strongly believe that hughes and kettner make the best amps. theyre all tube as well. it depends on what you want to play, but h&k never dissapoints |

they both sound the same, theres practically no point in owning a neck and bridge pickup and emgs typically sound the same in every guitar, whereas passives actually bring out the sound in the guitar. my personal recommendation is jb(n) 59(bridge) by seymour duncan those pickups in my opinion are the best. the jb gives a really nice thick sound for solos, and if you play without distortion its pretty awesome. the 59s are really versatile as well. i used it for heavy metal and it was by far the heaviest tone ive ever had, but again, when i wasnt using distortion is still sounded great. i think this setup excels in pretty much every category. ive heard of blues and jazz guys using the guitar i had (which had those pickups) and i used them for death metal. also, ive used the guitar with multiple amps. |

Hmm I'll have to give it some thought. My friend with the Marshall setup has a sweet birds eye maple Les Paul with the same EMG setup and it sounds great. My only concern is that they maaay be a bit too aggressive for some of the stuff(very mellow) I come up with. Like I said I'm not a huge guitar player so I'm open to new ideas. |

if youre not going to have a ton of distortion then emgs are going to sound pretty bad, usually. Take a serious look at the duncans i suggested. They impressed me with not only my metal stuff, but also the mellower songs i wrote. I also have the Steve Vai evolution pickups by Dimarzio. They were also very good. |

the stuff I recorded was with an epiphone SG that I put Duncans in. Sounds really good. I got a custom 5 in the bridge and full shred in the neck. You'd think that you'd want to have them reversed but that particular configuration is really really nice. |

I'm definitely not an authority when it comes to anything musical, but I assume from what I've heard is that you have to spend some money to get quality. Also, I am probably going to trade in my elec guitar for a bass. I don't have the hands of a guitarist (too small for chords) and have always liked the idea of playing bass (plus, I have a friend who plays guitar, and then it would be more appropriate to jam, especially if we find someone to play drums).[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl] |

Spending money to get quality applies to pretty much everything. In this case, I figure I can buy a cheap guitar and put better pickups in it and come out with a decent guitar(or atleast one that is mo bettah). I could buy a proper Gisbon SG but I cannot justify spending that much on something I won't play much. Way back when, I started out playing guitar. Didn't really care for it, and realized my brain is not wired for guitar. I love playing bass, been playing for about 9 years now. Just don't allow yourself to be stuck as a root note player. It's a good place to start, and allows you get a feel for the instrument, but there is sooo much more to be explored in the realm of bass playing; I am a huge fan of polyphonic two hand tapping. My favorite bass players are: Victor Wooten Stu Hamm Jaco Pastorius There are many others... |

when it comes to music i often come off as a bitter old man because very few musicians around me try at all unless theyre going to be some lame bar/cover band. either that or theyre so stoned they cant really physically play |

No worries. My SG came in today so I went and bought a Spider IV 30 from a local shop. Well... they didn't have one in the store here but are having one transferred here so it should arrive tomorrow. |
