What a great idea! Paying individually for fire protection, what a perfect utopia!

Firstly, this obviously demonstrates why nobody should accept a system like this, and im not limiting it to the fire department. There are clearly services that should be left to collective payment or control.

Second, the firemen are definitely at fault too, even if theyre just taking orders. Someone who takes/follows orders from a dickhead is also a dickhead.

individually paying for fire protection is one of the worst ideas ever.

Well, to be fair, that guy willingly didn't pay, if I willingly don't pay my electric bill I won't get mad if my power goes off, yeah it was a shitty thing for them to do, but those firefighters most likely didn't want to watch the guy's house burn down, if they had put out the fire without that guy paying, all those firefighters probably would have lost their job.

I'm not defending either party, this is a pretty neutral topic for me

No, they didnt pay before hand, they called and said they would pay anything if they just came out and helped.

It would be like your electric provider saying "No, we wont at least come turn on your electricity because you didnt pay us at the beginning of the month"

or better yet, replace electricity provider with police department.

Also, putting ones job before another human beings life is crazy. There could have been people trapped in there, and their animals died as well. If I was a judge and this came before me, theyre all going away for a long time, and none of them will be able to own a business or be associated with any fire department in the state.

That exact punishment happened to someone around here for something similar, but way less scumbaggish, and it fits.

Of course the guy would say that, if his house didn't catch fire he probably would've continued to not pay the firefighters.

That's pretty harsh. Can't believe they would do that, even if they were ordered to. The guy really deserves it though for not contributing to the fire department. He knew his risks.

Should have paid. I'm sure they were made aware of their situation previously.

This is why you get things like insurance, and pay your electric bill, as deadly said.

First, with the potential loss of life it simply doesn't make sense to let it burn.

If one is so far removed that they think its okay, the neighbor, who did pay had property that caught on fire.

Things like this are not individual issues as fires speed very easily. Even if one person didn't pay, the most responsible thing to do to say is fuck it and put it out

Those inconsiderate fucks, I mean they could have atleast brought marshmallows...

They way to handle the situation would be to have the homeowner agree to pay whatever fees are applicable(which he was clearly up for), then put the fire out. I'd imagine the fees would be something like the total amount for the years that they haven't been paying, then a penalty for not having been paying. The homeowner would have a clear choice. Watch his shit burn or pay up.

In any case, they should have put it out no matter the policy. I'm fairly certain that human/animal life is worth more than $75. Unless your a hamster, in that case fuck you.

i imagine everyone was out of the house

OH SHIT. I know what they could have done.

I would have walked inside my own house and sat down, then been like... TRY NOT PUTTING IT OUT NOW BITCHES.
