How can you not have access to Office?

The only M$ apps I use are 7 and Office.

Sooo.... how many product keys for 7 can you get :D

one download each unfortunately :(

gotta be selfish.

Ive decided to add SQL Server to my list.

As im downloading Visual Studio, I decided to look at the price tag.

Not for the squeemish:
http://www.amazon.com/Visual-Studio-2010-Premium-MSDN/dp/B0038KRM6Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285814452&sr=8-1

I just noticed Amazon does not list W7 in the list of platforms. They are retarded.

The reason I dont have access to the office suite is because this program is designed for student software developers(CIS, Computer Science etc), and math majors.

So I guess you're going into programming? I'm way to ADD for that lol

I do need to learn SQL though; most of my bigger clients have custom software that relies on SQL databases, and I hate having to call tech support to solve SQL problems when they arise.

yeah im a programmer.

as far as sql goes, that is a weakness for me as well. luckily any programming gig ive had understood that im a student, and only in this semester have i even taken an sql class.

i would imagine your situation being pretty annoying.

Once I get this sql down though, theres some major bank to be made. I can develop entire information systems for businesses in my area and charge ridiculous prices.

IIRC you work for the state? Or maybe that's another person...

There is a company around here that creates and deploys accounting software packages, and they make serious bank. They also use generic programs like Peach Tree, MAS90, and Quickbooks. Their service is a $800 a month contract + $75/hr for on site work(they provide general IT support too). I have also heard that they charge $255/hr for onsite software support if you're not under contract(though I cannot confirm this).

I've been thinking of starting up my own consulting gig, it's just a scary prospect doing things on your own. I know one guy that left where I currently work to start his own gig and made $100k his first year. Bought a expensive house in a very upscale area, and was living the good life. Then the economy tanked and he went down to like $50k a year cause he lost most of his clients. Then his last big client(that accounted for $30k a year) bailed on him and hired a inhouse IT guy. Needless to say he had to sell his house and is now pretty much begging for work. Of course he was a retard for spending so much money. So the rewards are great, but so too are the risks.

nowadays im interning at a non profit. the only thing that sucks about what im doing now is that im using vb.net 2003 and dealing with some things that violate standards.

as far as going independent i dont think i would do that as my sole income. I would at least get a part time job. that and im the cheapest mother fucker youll ever meet. I had two jobs over the summer and didnt spend anymore than 50 bucks a month on nonbills.

Lewis Black gets unfunnier the longer his sets run, though. He always starts moving away from observational rants and starts preaching, and then I want to turn it off.

But yeah, he's definitely hilarious.

I think that if you(you, me, whomever) had a solid client base, understood the ebb and flow of business, and knew how to properly manage your resources, you would do ok. Of course even well prepared ppl can fail...

For me, since I do general service and administration, I'd imagine it would be easier for me to succeed. I could very well be wrong, but I do not know any successful freelance programmers. All of my programmer friends either work directly for the company they support or for a developer.

Visio and Visual Studio are the only things on there worth downloading besides operating systems. I've had MSDNAA for three years and haven't downloaded anything but Visio. I got Visual Studio off DreamSpark (another MS student freebies site that has a few of the MSDNAA programs). Before I graduate I will probably grab the XP, Vista, and 7 keys off MSDNAA for personal use.

Meh, Visual Studio is overkill anyway. The express editions are free downloads and just as good.

Makes programming easier with Intellisense. It has compilers and step-through debuggers with variable watch for a bunch of languages. It lets you rapidly create windows forms via a drag-and-drop interface for .NET languages. There is a ton of stuff that it does.

The huge price tag is mainly for businesses. As I said, the express editions are free and have the same functionality. They have a non-commercial license, but who is ever going to know?
