Is it possible that in some way my port forwarding could reset my modem?

My shit was resetting every 5 minutes while I was torrenting.

so i unchecked everything that was port forwarded except for the one that applies to the torrent...

and now it's not.

I say, what the fuck.

Maybe to much traffic being passed that overloaded your router...

You're being hacked. Toss your computer out the nearest window to ensure the hack doesn't spread to your other electronic devices.

OH YEAH UPDATE TIEM

So, he did not give me a new modem but he went outside and was like WHAT THE GODDAMN WHO DID THIS TRASH.

The line from the street was plugged into a 3-way splitter with 2 of the ports unused, he removed that, and stripped back the line from the street as he said it was corroded and put a new head on it and connected our wall directly.

He went to 192.168.100.1 (JUST LIKE YOU DID, BUT ON A WEB BROWSER) and he said the signal strength went from -2 to +5.

Everything has been hunky dory since then AFAIK.

WAS HE BULLSHITTING ME y/n

oh, and it's cool because now I can look at my modem directly, not that it matters

OH OH OH AND

AND I BET THE FACT THAT it mostly happened when I used the computer that was torrenting was just because as sgs suggested, it was getting overloaded.

The technician that came and changed it was shocked that we'd used it as it was for over a year.

Yea shitting wiring either internal or external can cause all sorts of weird problems. When I had my cable modem installed I made the tech run a brand new drop from the pole to the house, then straight to the modem. No splitters, filters or other BS.

And yes, you can see your modem from the IP in a browser, though depending on your ISP certain sections may be disabled. What we were doing in the cmd windows was testing connectivity.

Glad it works better now :D

Happened again =/

While the internet signal is MUCH more consistent, when I download too much it crashes so they're replacing the modem (that's all they're doing) on Friday.

After they replace the modem, if you still have issues replace the router. You can go to Best Buy or equivalent and buy a standard G router( a Linksys WRT54G2 should be around $50) and try that. The idea is that you have a 30 day return policy so you can return the router if it turns out to not be the problem. Also, if the new router resolves your issues than you can leave it hooked up, and go online and buy another router for cheaper. When the new router comes in, just rebox the one from BBY and return it. Be sure of course, to do all of this within the 30 day return policy.

That's a decent router. I'm assuming you're running the stock firmware on it? If you want, see if there is a firmware upgrade available, and try that(if the new modem doesn't fix the problem). Worst case scenario you brick your router trying to upgrade it, but then you get a new one lol.

lol

Here is the support site for your router:

http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54GL (go to download section, derp)

Upgrading firmware is easy, and there is a PDF that explains how to do it. The gist of it is to select what version router you have(I guess 1.1 but verify before you proceed) then download the latest firmware file and unzip it. Then log into your router(192.168.1.1 in a browser) and go to the administration page. There you should see a link for upgrading the firmware. Click upgrade or restore, then it will popup asking where the firmware file is. Navigate to the file, and hit ok. It will warn you to not disconnect your router while it is upgrading, cause if you do you will be in a world of shit. Just let it run, and it will tell you when it's done. Oh, and pray the power doesn't go out while you're doing this.

Pretty much and your whole house is contaminated with radiations. Either that or you are stuck with a router that has half of its firmware loaded. There is no way to log into it if this happens and fix it. It's called bricked, and is pretty much garbage. On some routers if this happens there is a pin that you can short out to reset it, but this doesn't work all the time.

Install Linux on your router.

There's no possible way that could needlessly complicate things and not offer any real benefits at all.
