An interesting phenomena from my physics class

My physics professor (who is fucking amazing at physics and engineering) teachers three classes: 9am class, 1.25 class, and 2.25class.

We recently got our first test back. He said that the 9am class scored an average of a 51/80. The 225 class scored an average of a 52/80. However, the 125 class scored a 42/80.

Apparently this phenomena has been going on for quite a few years. The 125 class just seems to always do poorly compared to the other two classes. Of course, I'm in the 125 class and I know I bombed the test (haven't checked my grade yet).

He says he teaches all the classes the same way. Any of you armchair psychologists want to offer up your own theory as to why? I'm guessing that maybe lunch has something to do with it, because it might make some students too restless after eating, or maybe too tired.

I'd say it's cause everyone just got back from lunch and is feeling slothful. And it may just be me, but I always get bored/tired around that time.

That doesn't explain the 9am class being average.

its the time of day. everyone is either hungry or slothful because they just ate

also, people who dont want to take the class probably dont want to take it first thing in the morning because they think theyll be too tired to understand something they dont care about

I have a hard time believing that simply being hungry or slothful would result in a >10% grade drop, especially when you consider that you learn most of it outside of class when studying the material.

And the second point can't apply because the 2.25 class did just as well as the 9am class.

this is a good point, however the students instructor time may suffer due to hunger/sloth.

other than that, i dunno. maybe hes just hungry or tired, and isnt actually teaching as well and is just a dick and wont admit it. :)

I think just eating and feeling slothful affects one's ability to think hence the poorer scores.

people who wake up early would be more likely to be responsible or nerdy, I would think, and therefore more likely to make good grades....

sounds like best answer to me

e: but I see the 225 scores are the highest, so never mind

I guess lunch or hunger caused slothfulness is the answer, or it's a coincidence and there is no common causation

why the hell are we talking about this

Your sample size is too small to draw any meaningful conclusions. I would agree with MR. Cheese, but further data is needed.

It probably has a lot to do with people's brains shutting down after lunch. I know I'm the same way. My best work is always done in the morning.[cleft=darkslategray][/cleft][cright=black][/cright][pleft=white][/pleft][dl=black][/dl]

it's because the instructor gets high right before lunch, affecting the 1.25 class, but has drunk enough caffeine to be more lively for the 2.25 class

srsly though, 125 is RIGHT after lunch and 225 is further. makes a difference

I'm probably just going to sit in on both the 125 and 225 class from now on.

Taking notes and showing up for class is for squares.

Just show up on test day and kick that test's ass.
