"Games development these days is completely compartmentalized; you have people who do nothing but make the logo for a game. I think that's kind of a shame. Things are just different. Ourselves, we're like the people who made their own films before making it big in Hollywood. I think we've got the skills we need to make anything we want, anywhere we want, on any budget we want. That's where my pride, or my confidence, comes from. This point isn't limited to the game business, but if we don't have an environment where developers can make what they want and find an audience for it, then I think it's all going to come crashing down. I think we'll see fewer people wanting to get into games, and that's dangerous." - Hideo Kojima

What do you all think? Will the industry crash again?

I agree with him fully.

I too have noticed what he talks about. If you take a look at movies in the past, some were made with the intentions of making quality.

Now everything is driven by the profit motive, which has never been effective. If you want to do something great you will, but now, too much corporate bullshit is getting in the way.

Its not necessarily the budget thats ruining games, its just the environment in which theyre being made.

in the early days, development teams were very small, and the direction of the game was able to go into more interesting areas. Now, its gotta be some faggoty lame shooter like section 8 or something. Everyones there for money FIRST, the game comes second. back in the glory days, the great games were all made by people who probably would have made the games anyway, if they were given the resources.

I know thats not necessarily what hes saying, but this is my take on it.

I think you have a problem when the budget drives the idea of the game (GTA IV) rather than the idea for the game driving the budget (Shenmue).

would be fine by me. I've already said I'm done keeping up with current games after this generation. Maybe sooner. I've got way too many games I haven't even really dug into all the way yet to just keep going down this road.

Yeah, I think a crash would be good too. Get those fuckers at Activision to realize gaming isn't an "industry" but a creative medium.

I'm sure the industry will crash, even though people support it wholeheartedly.

FF 7 was made with 45 million dollars, which is more than I'll ever make in my entire life, and look what happened with that game.

There's no way the console industry would crash before the PC gaming industry because PC gaming just isn't nearly as accessible.

Nintendo appealing to casuals is what is going to keep consoles going. Video games are just a part of every day life now; they're mainstream pop culture. The game industry is just as big as the film and music industries now.

Dude, I'm pretty sure The Sims, Plants VS Zombies and Peggle are pretty fucking accessible.
