That game was made for heavy metal fans. I know it's obvious but if you're actually a heavy metal fan there is some much symbolism, inside jokes and just outright fan service if you're a servant of the metal gods than if you don't really enjoy the genre. The art style is great, the textures, lighting and effects are all done really well to create a truly badass heavy metal world with each area having it's own flavor that represents a subgenre of metal, in effect. The soundtrack is obviously awesome and in some bits they have songs playing that seem like those parts were created specifically around the song. It's really a great thing to experience. The gameplay is pretty seamless between a few different genres, mainly hack n' slash and RTS. There was way more RTS than I was expecting and that brought down the experience a bit for me because I don't like RTS. YMMV. However, I did get the hang of how things worked and was able to pass these sections (with some difficulty, mind you). I would have preferred a few more traditional style boss battles in place of a few of those "stage battles" but it only started to piss me off near the end of the game. What I really liked about the RTS sections were the fact that you could control the flow of the battle from above and with the push of a button you could go ground level and play the game like a hack n' slash once you've sent your orders to attack/defend/whathaveyou. That's probably the silver lining of the RTS sections was that it wasn't just one or the other, it was both and it worked so well. I didn't really want to write a review, I just wanted to give you my impressions on it. Final verdict: If you like Tim Shaffer games, heavy metal, RTS, or hack n' slash you should at least give it a rent. If you like all of those, you need to own it. |

yeah, i think i'd already decided that, and you suggestion agrees with it, so I think I'll just rent Uncharted 2 as well. I still might buy Dragon Age though. I can't decide. |

While I was watching that I realized the guy was calling Brutal Legend an "RTS" (unless I misheard), and I feel like I've heard other people (reviewers) call Brutal Legend this as well. When I think RTS, I think Real Time Strategy like AOE and so on. Is there more than one acronym like this, did I hear incorrectly, or does Brutal Legend have a secret civilization builder I'm not aware of? |

It has troop command and (presumably) unit building and direction which pretty much makes it an RTS. I don't think it has city building or upgrading or unit upgrading. But, I've never played it so

basically you and the enemy have bases called "stages". The objective is to destroy the enemy stage while defending your own. The battle arenas have points called "fan geysers" that you must capture and hold by playing a fan tribute solo near. Once this is done, a merch booth is built upon the point which fuels your stage. The more fans you have, the more units you can deploy. You can deploy up to 40 units at a time, each one being more costly to build and deploy than the last. You can command the entire army or a particular set of troops to attack/defend a given point on the map or you can just have them follow you. You can also upgrade your stage which gives you access to more powerful units as well as the ability to upgrade your infantry-type units to more powerful ones (which is vital to winning the last few battles). the badass part about it though is once you get the battle going, you can press a button and go ground level and play the game like a sort of hack n slash meets "Overlord" kinda game if you want. Or you can take to the sky again and be like the armchair quarterback and play the whole battle from above (there's an achievement/trophy involved in doing it this way). |

mmm. You just solidified my intent to play this game. I still won't buy it, but that sounds pretty badass. Some RTSes I absolutely adore. |
