![]() This entry in the Soul Calibur series comes with it's shares of glory and disappointments. For the first time in the series, you can play online, which is awesome. However, while the game does boast a healthy roster, most of them are clones of other characters, in fact, all of the "Bonus characters" you unlock are just clones of other characters. The game looks amazing, the backgrounds can hypnotize you, weapons have many different effects and the ground can shatter when you deliver a powerful enough blow, this game also delivers its fair share of cool, if there's something cooler in a fighting game than a staff covered in lighting with the fucking moon at the end of it, then please tell me. ![]() Yes, that's the moon at the end of her staff, why? Fuck you, that's why. Soul Calibur 4 is easy to pick up and play for beginners but there is depth that more advanced players can enjoy, the stages are also varied and fun to look at, there are stages where you can fight without having to worry about someone getting lucky and ringing you out, or, if you like to use your ass as storage space, there are stages without walls where you can choose to fight as well. The Star Wars characters (The Apprentice and Yoda) are weird additions, but one of them actually fits, The Apprentice is fast, strong, looks cool, and fits in well. Yoda however, is both annoying to fight with and to fight against, as he's slow and cumbersome and hard to control, also, if you double tap on the control pad, instead of running fast like all the other characters, he will instead jump toward your opponent, which is both slow and dangerous as that can actually RING HIM THE FUCK OUT. He also cannot be grappled, so if you friend is using him against you, feel free to smash his glasses and then stop being friends with him. ![]() "Your sack in my mouth, I want." Haha, get it? Because he's Yoda. The character creation is what will get you hooked to this game, you can set your character with whatever armor and weapons you want, you can choose from all sorts of hair and while there are only 6 voices for each gender, you can change the pitch of each voice to make it sound radically different for each character you make, also, seeing your character fight in the story is something fun to watch, and you can even customize characters from the main roster if you want, although, you can't change them as much as a character you make from scratch. The Tower of Souls mode is a fun diversion, it works as sort of a miniature survival mode where each floor presents you with an extra challenge like to stand on all corners of the stage during a fight, or to guard 5 attacks in a row. You can either ascend or descend in the tower, descending is a little tougher because there are no breaks between floors, and you do not regain health after a fight, this takes an advanced know-how of the character creation system to master. Although Soul Calibur 4 lacks the sophistication of the other entries, it makes up for it in the sheer amount of fun you'll have with it, there is plenty to keep you busy, you unlock new sets of armor for every 10 achievements you get, and the character creation with almost certainly pull you in and never let go. Score: 8.0/10 Also, Straglehold and Prototype reviews will come soon |
