Time for a NFL thread with the season coming up.

And the big news of the day: Brett Farve is staying retired. My reaction-Thank God.

I don't care.

I'm still waiting to see how the Broncos' defense is going to look. It'll be better than last year, but by how much?

The offense will definitely be good. Stability at running back and Orton playing quarterback.

Special teams will be improved for sure.

I see ESPN "analysts" picking the Broncos to go 4-12 or 3-13 all the time, and I just don't see it. I think 8-8 is the WORST they'll do. I think the team is better than it was last year, but we have a harder schedule.

I think 10-6 is the best case scenario, 8-8 worst case.
Kyle Orton (7-4) in 2009: 214/344 (62.2%), 2447 yards, 12 TD, 6 INT, 1 fumbles (0 lost), 0 rushing TD, 87.9 QB rating
Jay Cutler (4-6) in 2009: 235/381 (61.7%), 2524 yards, 15 TD, 18 INT, 7 fumbles (1 lost), 1 rushing TD, 74.5 QB rating

I think a lot will depend upon how the team rebounds from the rocky offseason. If guys like Marshall keep causing trouble, and other discontent remains, especially around the new, young, head coach, the Broncos may very well go 7-9 or worse. If McDaniels can keep things together, and the new defense works out, 8-8 or better is possible. I wouldn't call 8-8 a worst case scenario, personally.

I look at it like this.

These are instant wins:
@Browns
Bengals
Chiefs (X2)
Raiders (X2)

That's six off the bat, because those teams are just plain awful.

I see them splitting with the Chargers at the very least, if not sweeping. So that's 7 (or 8).

So, these are the rest of the games:
Cowboys
Patriots
@Ravens
Steelers
@Redskins
Giants
@Colts
@Eagles

Those are all good teams, but I see the Broncos beating Washington. So that's eight (or nine) wins.

And I think they CAN beat the Eagles, Colts, and Cowboys. Doesn't mean they WILL, but they can.

Ill be watching Denvers defense this year as well, because I suspect Nolan will act like the cancer he is and cause a lot of problems for the morale.

Not that I want to see Denvers D go sour, I just want to see if the same thing happens there that happened in frisco.

I would give my predictions for SF's season but I dont know anything about Jimmy Raye, so I dont know what to expect. The 49ers have had spurts of really great football over the years but cant seem to finish/play catch up well in a game. Like last year during the 1st,3rd and 4th quarter of the cowboys game the 49ers were doing great and the cowboys fans were just dead silent. Same thing happened against the eagles and patriots. The only teams last year to actually hand their asses back to them were the saints, giants, arizona (first game only, sf shoulda won the second one)

Our defense was absolutely terrible last year, so I don't see how it could be any worse regardless of Nolan.

We added some quality veterans and rookies like Brian Dawkins, Andra Davis, Ronald Fields, Renaldo Hill, and Robert Ayers. And Champ Bailey is healthy. That will make our defense better by default; we're an entirely different team with Champ on the field.

The big question is whether the switch to the 3-4 will be a successful one or not.

Yeah, they definitely need a horse in the middle. I hope Fields can fill that gap.

Nolan is the type of guy whos all about very very plain 3-4 defense.
I wonder what the preseason game against Denver is gonna be like. I know its only preseason but Nolan is such a douche bag and definitely holds a grudge against the organization, specifically: alex smith, shaun hill, and scott mcloughan.

he also has shit against the ownership but thats obvious.

If the 49ers win that game, I know nolan will take it personally despite the fact its meaningless. He used to get somewhat cocky when the 49ers would win preseason games (especially last year)

Went to Patriots training camp today, it was pretty cool. Though it did get a bit boring after a little while. It's always nice to see your favorite players in person.

Overall I saw what I wanted to with the 9ers. the offense looked pretty good while some of the starters were out, the defense looked good too, but no willis.

I wish they would cut zack keasey already, he spent all last year on IR and now he just got injured again. the guy is soft. he broke his forearm not being able to defend the qb, which led to a sack.

its too bad morran norris is a father now, otherwise he would be a better fullback. He actually was with frank gore in sf before and helped him get in the pro bowl.

Broncos' defense looked strong, the special teams looked better, and the running game was great. If Kyle Orton plays to his capabilities we go to the playoffs. I'm willing to give him a pass on last night's game due ti it being the first preseason game in a new city surrounded by new team mates, but he'd better not play like that again.

Cutler threw a pick in his preseason game, then he blamed it on Hester in the media.

Guy's becoming the NFL's number one d-bag.

He didn't look bad. Quick on his feet and the passes had velocity on them. Considering how much time he had with the playbook and team mates, I'd say he didn't do too bad.

Can't wait to see how Orton bounces back.
