NOTE:I'm just going to call the game Core Plus because I'm way too lazy to type the name each time.

Overview:The Guilty Gear series has been around since 1998 when the first game came out on the PS1. Guilty Gear games are a collection of incredibly deep, anime-esque 2D fighters with a battle roster of metal-inspired characters, and some of the fastest, most frantic gameplay in the 2D fighting genre. The XX series is pretty much the same as the older titles, the only difference being more characters and slightly different battle mechanics. Core Plus is an updated version of the original Accent Core which came out on October 16, 2007. I will talk about the changes later in the review.

Gameplay:Core Plus offers an offense-intensive fighting system. Not only will you have to memorize special moves and figure out long combos, you will also have to master the arts of the Tension Bar (which you build up like an energy bar and use for various moves), the Roman Cancel (a way to cancel the time your character takes to recover after executing a move), the Force Break attack (which enhances a special move which can ultimately lead it to become a 1-hit KO), and the Slash Back (a way to counterattack your opponent quickly).High-level Guilty Gear play really is that nuanced and complicated.

Controls The Wii version of the game offers the ability to be played in 3 different ways. Wiimote+Nunchuck combo/GC controller/Classic Controller. And please for the love of God, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU DO NOT OWN A GC OR CLASSIC CONTROLLER. While it is not completely unplayable with the Wiimote, it is extremely uncomfortable and you will very rarely be able to pull off even the simplest combos. While the other 2 controllers are pretty much identical in terms of playing ability, the classic controller has a more friendlier fighting-game button layout. But either controller will do just fine.

Graphics:The game will remind you of the old SNK titles of the 90's (Which is a very, VERY good thing) The characters are all beautifully drawn and their animations just ooze personality, the backgrounds are varied and will never disappoint you.

Characters: There are 25 characters in Core Plus (2 more than its predecessor) Not a single character will feel like a clone of a different character. Each character has a very unique moveset and even mastering each one can take a long time. The beauty of the cast of Core Plus is the sheer ridiculousness of them. Some characters were obviously mimicked from real life rockers (Testament, Axl Low, Slayer, Venom) and others are just incredibly random and have very unique personalities: You have your little 2-ton anchor wielding little girl (Who reminds me of Zack from Zack & Wiki), you have your electric-guitar-shredder, only-vest-wearing magician lady who will rape you many times during Arcade mode. You have bag-wearing, sickle-wielding people, you have androids, you have pretty much what appears to be a smaller type of a Gundam, you have a "girl" who you will later find out "IT'S A TRAP!", the list goes on and on. This game does not disappoint in the roster department.

Modes: This game boasts a plethora of different modes that will keep you playing for months to come. Unfortunately there is no online (Which is simply inexcusable considering how amazing this game would play online and just how fun it would be) Here is a list of different modes that the game contains:
-ARCADE (Typical arcade mode)
-M.O.M (Game mode where powerups are able to be collected)
-Training
-Vs. 2PU
-Vs. CPU (The CPU AI will bring quite a challenge, even in normal)
-Story Mode (Arcade type mode where you can have handicaps)
-Mission Mode (Almost like Story Mode, but with different handicaps)
-Survival Mode (But you can level up different stats of your fighter in between fights)

Changes from Accent Core:
-Kliff and Justice are the 2 new characters (Both of whom are awesome)
-Team Versus mode
-Survival mode has RPG elements
-Mission mode is back
-New Gallery and updated Story mode
-Many of the bugs of Accent Core are eliminated.
-Gameplay has been tweaked even more to become even more balanced.

Conclusion
:The game is only $30 at retail stores. Sounds like a steal right? If you like fighting games: Get this game. If you like games that are more than worth their price: Get this game. The only reason that I could think of for you to not get this game would be if you already own the original Accent Core, then you would have to look at the new changes that this game offers and decide if you're willing to shell out 30 buckaroos for them.

FINAL SCORE: 9/10

The Wii is the only place you can kind games like this anymore.

Shoot em-ups and 2D fighters are the most "hardcore" of any genre, which is why I laugh my ass off when PS3 and 360 owners call the Wii "casual".

You go play your space marine FPS. I'll play Castle of Shikigami III and Guilty Gear.
Kyle Orton (7-4) in 2009: 214/344 (62.2%), 2447 yards, 12 TD, 6 INT, 1 fumbles (0 lost), 0 rushing TD, 87.9 QB rating
Jay Cutler (4-6) in 2009: 235/381 (61.7%), 2524 yards, 15 TD, 18 INT, 7 fumbles (1 lost), 1 rushing TD, 74.5 QB rating

I wouldn't say harder. It's difficult to compare with Ikaruga, since that game has such unique mechanics.

But Shikigami III is definitely a well-made shooter. If you're looking for other Wii shooters, check out Blastworks, Metal Slug Anthology, Geometry Wars Galaxies, The House of the Dead games, Gyrostarr, Gradius Rebirth, Star Soldier R, and the upcoming Sin and Punishment 2.

Yea I have these are they're incredible. I'll have to look up the other ones, I never got to play the original Sin and Punishment (Wasn't it Japan only?) Right now I'm in the process of trying to import Basara 2.

Yes, Sin and Punishment was Japan only. But you can either find it on Virtual Console right now in America, or play it on a US N64 with a very easy to do hardware mod.

Trigger heart Excelica, Ikaruga, REZ, R Type and prolly others were remastered and released on XBLA
A good portion of the recent CAVE (read: Gods of shmups) games have been released on 360 in Japan as well as Castle of Shikigami II
Raiden IV is coming to 360, stateside. Been out in Japan.

Soldner X was released on PSN.
Several dual stick shooters a la smash TV/geometry wars have been released on PSN.

You can't say that the Wii is the ONLY place to get those kinds of games. They're on the other systems as well. Most of them are downloads and not released at retail but their presence shouldn't be overlooked.

Although you're right in saying that the Wii has more domestic retail releases for shmups and 2D fighters compared to the other systems.

Re-releases don't even get a consideration from me, because if they did then you could just mention the TG-16, Genesis, and SNES SHMUPs on VC and the Wii would dominate by far.

Compilations are fine, but remakes and re-releases don't count. The House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return is even pushing it.

There are some. Not a lot. Not nearly as many as Wii.
