I've finally struggled my way through the entire game, and I'm ready to give my complete impressions of it. I think I'll just jump right into it. Sound It doesn't get much worse in terms of voice acting. The cast is made up of C-list American actors doing a poor job of imitating East-European accents. When the characters express emotion, it's sometimes hard to tell if they're being sarcastic or simply failing that badly at conveying their messages. I vomit in my mouth when I read people praising the voice acting in this game, especially when previous games contained the talents of Gary Busey, Burt Reynolds, Lee Majors, Danny Trejo, and Ray Liotta among countless others. The soundtrack is also significantly worse than the series standard. While previous games were pretty balanced, this one simply isn't. The selection of classic rock is simply awful, and most of what you've got is bad hip hop and bad R&B. While I certainly want hip hop to be in the game for people who enjoy it, there's no reason at all for there to be this much imbalance. The selection of rock in general is sub-par, and if not for the Bob Marley station I wouldn't have listened to the radio at all while playing the game. Again, while music taste is purely subjective, this game loses major points for the lack of balance and variety. Score: 2.3/10 Visuals and related issues The scale of the game is simply massive, and it does a pretty fine job of rendering the city. For the most part, Liberty City is a beautiful place to explore. The weather effects are nice, the characters are well animated, and you can tell great care was taken in making the game look beautiful. All of that aside, it's certainly not flawless. First of all, there are many noticeable instances of the frame rate dropping. Rockstar bit off a bit more than it could chew with this one, and it shows. There are also glitches and a lot of pop-in. When I was playing, it wasn't uncommon to drive over a hill only to see a police officer walking on nothing or a car appear out of nowhere a few dozen yards away. Finally, the texture work is below standard for an Xbox 360 game, and sometimes you can actually see texturing on a building appear and disappear as you come around a corner. Also, the shadows sometimes glitch out and look simply awful. It's hard to explain, but you'll know it when you see it. Overall, it's a fine looking game that is held back by the limitations of its engine. Score: 7.9/10 Story and characters Dear god, kill me know. The story is simply awful. Niko, your main character, is lured to America by a cousin of his with promises of the American dream. But it turns out your cousin is a liar (and a fucking douche), so you have to work your way to the top by doing all sorts of things. The game attempts to tell the story of the American dream from the perspective of an immigrant, but in a short amount of time you become drowned in a sea of extremely unlikable characters, incredibly poor humor, and a generic and senseless plot. There are so many characters in this game that most of them are severely under-developed. And the ones that are developed are so fucking irritating anyway that you wish they weren't. Niko's significant other doesn't have a problem with the fact that you're a heartless killer, but she feels the need to bitch at you for not changing your clothes. And if you make any friends in the game, they start to hate you unless you go out on what can only be called man dates. They're a needy bunch of little bitches and I want them all to die. Jumping ahead, as you progress through the game characters will reference other ones. Except that there are so many of them (and most unremarkable at that) that you'll likely have no idea who the fuck they're talking about, which makes following the rudimentary plot even more of a chore. The game comes to an unsatisfying conclusion that tries to make you reflect upon society as a whole, but really just makes you wonder why the fuck you wasted so many hours playing this piece of shit. Score: 1.0/10 Gameplay, control, pacing, and other such things Most of this is standard GTA fare, but worse. Hand-to-hand combat has had an overhaul in what appears to be an attempt at depth. But really, you're just going to mash a few buttons until the other guy falls on the ground and dies. The gunplay sucks ass. The targeting mechanism is as retarded as ever, preferring to target that little old lady rather than the motherfucker standing in front of you with a fucking machine gun. This game also introduced a cover system, which is awful. When you take cover, you pretty much stick to something so you can shoot at stuff on the other side of, or behind it. But the problem is that it's pretty wonky, so half the time when you're trying to get away from an object and run somewhere you'll just end up getting stuck to somethign else. Also, you can't see what's in front of you (behind the camera), so it's pretty easy to get rushed and killed. So, you either use the shitty cover system or stand out in the open and pray that the auto-targeting selects the right person. Luckily, the game is easy as fuck so it's not a big deal, but it's fundamentally broken. You can turn off the auto-targeting, but you're no better off for it. And you can pull the left trigger to go to a free aim kind of thing, but it's too sensitive and therefore useless. The driving is a half-baked concept. It's like they wanted to take the controls of a racing sim and add them to the GTA formula, but then said fuck it half way and left it. The turning is harder than it ought to be and the camera angle never gives you that six o'clock angle that makes cornering easy. The end result is making a leap of faith when you take a sharp right corner and hoping there's nothing there that will derail your train. Also, does nobody in Liberty City have a fucking seatbelt? I found myself getting launched out the windshield far too often, which was fucking irritating. The missions are repetitive for the most part and far too easy. Drive to point A, pick up person A, drive to point B, kill person B, return to the place where you got the mission. There are some original missions that are genuinely fun, but far too many of them center on you being a delivery boy. And again, there is basically no challenge involved with the game beyond its own glitches and broken mechanics. Saving is idiotic and as a result you'll end up playing for far longer than you want to at one time. The map is far too large, and as a result getting from A to B takes a hell of a long time. There's no reason for that. You'd think that such a large place would have a lot of things to do, but you'd be wrong. You've got billiards and darts and all sorts of little minigames, but they all feel like WiiSports on a gamepad. Sure, there are clubs, strip joints, and all sorts of places to visit. But again, there's nothing really to do there. I really wasn't interested in hearing repetitive jokes at the comedy club or watching "erotic" dancing clusters of polygons. The majority of the side missions are unfulfilling, and almost everything you do in the game seems pointless. In Vice City, it seemed like everything you were doing had a purpose. You knew why you were doing things. In GTA IV, most of the time it seems like the game is being outrageous for the sake of being outrageous. And when you're not being outrageous, you're just bored. You can watch Katt Williams on a TV, but to be honest, you're much better off buying one of his DVDs. The new cell phone thing is idiotic. People constantly call and annoy you. Inputting codes on it sucks balls. There are also aspects of the games that make absolutely no sense. For one, money has absolutely no value, even though you spend the better portion of the beginning of the game collecting it. Guns only show up for purchase at the AmmuNation after you've found them in the game. For free. So in order to get your first gun, you pretty much have to beat a cop to death with the bad combat system or run him over with a car. Speaking of cops, what the fuck? The cop system is retarded, and it makes me so angry just thinking about it that I don't want to go into further detail. I'm running out of steam in this review. If there is any saving grace, it's the general mayhem and the multiplayer. Wreaking havoc in the GTA world is as fun as ever (without the planes and tanks...), but now you can do it with friends. The multiplayer is truly the best aspect of the game. Unfortunately, the mayhem is only fun in single player mode for a few minutes. The multiplayer is what keeps the gameplay score above 0. Score: 1.1/10 Overall This game is ass. Complete, total ass. It's full of tecnhical errors, the voice acting sucks, the story is awful, the controls are bad, the missions are poorly designed, and the NPCs are shitty. When people look at me with a straight face and tell me that this game is good, I have to question their sanity. The reviews this game garnered made me lose what little faith I had left in the game journalism industry. This game is a broken piece of shit wrapped up in mountains of hype and a pretty package. Score: 3.1/10 Edited by famicommander, Thursday, 26. March 2009, 21:51.

It was like less than a year ago when I beat this game, and I honestly don't remember hardly anything about it. I remember the friends were annoying, and I remember two missions that were really good (Three Leaf Clover and A Dish Served Cold), but the rest of it was so dull I couldn't remember it. I don't think it sucked horribly, but it wasn't great. It was just kind of bearable. You were ultra right about one thing in the review that nobody else mentions, though. The camera really is ass. |

I think people are more forgiving of the game's glaring flaws because of how impressive it is visually, and because of the sheer amount of things to do (even if said things suck ass). |

And if you make any friends in the game, they start to hate you unless you go out on what can only be called man dates. They're a needy bunch of little bitches and I want them all to die. This sums up about 90% of whats wrong with this damn game. I remember reading early on that rockstar showed off interesting concepts behind closed doors where the cell phone could be used when he got into deep shit with the mafia such as them calling unexpectedly then being forced into a fucked up mission. That would have been awesome, but sadly it didn't make it into the game. Considering what we saw from Saints Row before GTA IV would have been amazing in the graphics department. But it was utterly lacking, it just wasn't below 360 standards it was below this gens standards. The voice acting was hit or miss, Michael Hollick did a great job as Niko I will give him that but everyone else had accents of Americans just trying too damn hard. Most of the missions we're boring as fuck, Three Leaf Clover was fantastic and was probably the most fun I've ever had in a game. The cop system is a direct rip of saints row, much like most of the game. It's bull shit that some of the most cop chases the game has could have been made better if it wasn't there in the first place, it doesn't fit GTA at all. This fucker ![]() I don't even need to say anything. I'm not even sure I care about GTA anymore after this game. It made me reflect upon how they have tons more things out there for cheaper and will probably hold my attention for a shit ton longer than GTA IV did. I didn't even want to finish it but I did anyway cause I had 4 days off of work and just went for it. |

Nope. It's awful. Easily the worst game I've played this generation. And I played Far Cry Vengeance. |

We must not be playing the same game then, because GTAIV is an easy 8/10. Not a 10/10 by any stretch of the imagination, but a solid 8/10. |

Grand Theft Auto IV is a terrible game. Terrible camera, terrible controls, terrible story, terrible voice acting, terrible song selection, annoying characters, bad frame rate, glitchy as hell, repetitive missions, and bad driving mechanics. Just plain awful. |

I actually liked the controls (except for the fucking camera), combat, and driving mechanics in this game quite well. Had it had those things and the mission creativity and story non-suckiness of Vice City, it would've easily been a 10. But instead it had the same 2 mission types repeated to infinity and two hours worth of story stretched out over 40 hours of game, which brings it down into 6 territory. |

Well, there were definitely some problems with that (it has a ridiculous tendency to target civilians instead of enemies) but once you actually got locked onto the guy you wanted, the way that you could aim to hit specific limbs was kinda cool. |

Or you can just not use the targeting and fire with the reticule not locked on. That is much, much easier, and gets you easy headshots. |
