Depending on the piece Al, I do the same. If I don't like certain arrangements, I ad lib using the notes in the chords. That's the great thing about music! You can take something written and interpret it in a manor that suits you, without changing the main theme. Not only that but when I compose, I start with chords and work the melody in later. It is so important to know the direction your piece is taking not only by ear, but proper chord structure so your not off on some aimless tangent. Tora, thanks for that great link to this site. Anyone interested in composing or understanding chord structure should study this link. Basic music theory will not only help you understand music, but make you a better pianist as well. Great guide for transcribing also!

In the past I could be quite dismissive about the use of inversions or slightly unconventional voicings of chords (thinking that they were barely noticeable, if at all), but these days I realise it is important not to overlook the difference these small alterations can make to the atmosphere of a piece. |
