"Darn That Dream"

Hi,

Have posted another recording on my website. This one is more up tempo. It's called "DarnThat Dream". I start playing this old standard rubato through the entire tune and then I get into a more up tempo feel after that. I hope fellow members will critique positive or negative.

Also, I hope other members will post their tunes more often. It is a good way to encourage discussion, talk about how you practice a tune, the decisions you make, etc... In addition, it helps to put your playing in front of others. It is a good way to lose the fear or hesitation when it comes to playing for people.

Dan, thanks for this marvelous piece, it's good jazz, I liked your impro with its phrases they're well-built, I know it's a very difficult task to create these phrases to sound original, and every jazzperson has his or her preferences, so I'm not going to criticize preferences or style, but it's very convincing, although maybe you seem to neglect the harmony at acertain point, again it's a preference, I know, but sometimes, the harmony is just a base note that runs parallel with the melody and is sometimes absent, but I LIKED it.
PS it reminds me of some dinana krall's impros, this is a compliment, good job!

Maxwell,

Thank you very much for taking the time to listen to my recording and for your thoughtful comments.

You are correct; there are times when I am playing just a bass line parallel to the melody line. This has been a major concern of mine over the years and I am definitely making an effort to try and rhythmically insert more left handed voicings. A few years ago I transcribed Bill Evan’s “For Nannette” and that brought me miles ahead in this area. I really wanted to know what he was doing in his left hand. I found though, that Bill breaks up the harmony a lot. In other words, sometimes instead of playing a chord in his left hand he would instead play the notes of that chord rhythmically, contrapuntally, in tandem with his right hand. I really like that style of playing and continue every day to try and improve it in my own playing.

Another reason for the apparent absence of harmony is that I am trying to state a clear tempo to keep the tune moving. But, as I play the bass line I am trying to harmonize with my right hand even though it might only be two or three notes.

I appreciate you astute observation. Yesterday, I spent a long while practicing “Darn That Dream” and I kept in mind the idea of incorporating more harmony rhythmically and less bass line. I liked it but need to find a happy medium where I can use both techniques.

Thanks!
Dan

Mmm I love the sound of your versions :) This reminds me of why I love jazz piano! I'm also impressed by the quality of your recordings, so clear, it lets me hear every bit of feeling you give into the song without distractions.

Very good and admirable indeed, I like your style :)
