In most cases Luther, the Young Bull despised foraging, and preferred to leave it to the younger lieutenants who needed the battle experience, but this was an exception. The owner of the Cornfields had not been willing to barter with Oldtown and had hired two units of unsullied to protect his fields. Now normally Unsullied were near unstoppable, however they do have one fatal flaw, and that is that they are almost useless without a strong commander. Luther planned to exploit this as well as testing out a new battle tactic. It was a few years ago that a salty Dornishman from Sandstone had made his way to Oldtown. Then as it is till this day Sandstone was independent from the rest of Dorne, and not much was known about it. The Dornishman rode a spotted gelding, and on his back was strapped a double curved bow. He challenged some of the archers of Oldtown, to a contest for 10 golden dragons apiece. A target was placed at 500 yards and he challenged the 3 who had accepted to take their best shot. Now the archers of Oldtown are well trained and very accurate. They used longbows to cover the distance and landed some volleys close to the center of the target to many cheers from their comrades. Luther had watched smiling waiting to see what this Salty character was all about. As the Dornishman pulled his small double curved bow from his back, Luther’s first thought was that there was no way it would have the power to reach the target. He then watched in amazement as the Dornishman fired three arrows in rapid succession from the back of his horse, each of them landing closer than any of the Oldtown attempts had been. After he had collected his 30 dragons, Luther had immediately approached him and hired him on to work at the Citadel war college. Some of the Knights of Flowers had been trained in use of these bows, and today while foraging the Cornfields Luther would get an idea of how effective these bows could be. |
