I want to verify all of the accounting tomorrow, as Athiroc's army apears far larger than I calculated it could be, but I could be wrong. That being said the defending force must be modified as Athiroc only has 130 GD left for movement cost, and to support the army posted would cost close to 500GD. Due to issues like this, I also propose having a treasurer for the site, and a specific section to outline all of the accounting entries. I don't Belize that anyone is deliberately fudging any of the numbers, but as almost all of us can edit the grand library it can make things very confusing. |

Movement cost for this army is 470 if I'm not mistaken, which is exactly what I have. The army is this large primarily due to donations from Chugman and Cenedil. EDIT: Just rechecked and it's actually 480. My bad, I'll try to get the gold from an ally. If not, then just discount one of the men-at-arms battalions. Edited by Athidoc, Sep 4 2008, 09:05 PM.

I'm not trying to say anything unethical has been done, I just think that it's hard to verify some things and that accounting entries would be beneficial. |

(Athidoc, I apologize for the slow response. I have been crazy busy with work and travel. My first post is below.) Dark words, dark wings, thought Damen Tarly. The raven had come to him and Ser Alfred Redwyne as they were approaching the town. Willas Flowers, his friend and the leader of the Knights of Flowers had lost a battle in Dorne. Worse than this his whereabouts were still unknown, and it was assumed that he was either dead or in the custody of Lord Cenedil in Dorne. We need this battle more than ever. If we can take this town we will have split the enemy forces and will be only a short way from Lord Black’s capital, but if we lose, our enemies may become too strong for us. At that moment his scouts returned to him. “Ser Tarly, Ser Redwyne, we have come upon the enemy forces. As expected they are gathering on the road before the town.” “Good, good,” replied Alfred, “let us crush this scum for the honor of the White Bull and Ser Willas Flowers.” “What do their numbers look like,” asked Damen. “Much larger than expected Ser. They were able to garner elite fighting units from their allies, and they have almost twice the amount of men we expected them to have. 300 infantry, 150 pike, 50 cavalry and 150 men armed with bows or crossbows.” “Damen, this battle is going to be much more difficult than we assumed,” said Alfred. Damen could see that the young Ser Redwyne was tense. He was the highest ranking Knight to come out of the Citadel this year, and his skills with a lance were unmatched, but this would be his first battle. “Yes Alfred, it will be more difficult than originally expected, but I believe that we still have the advantage. The key to this battle will be determining the tempo. Our trebuchets have a longer range than anything they have, even their men of the vale, and they only have 50 of them. We will make those bastards come to us.” Damen had had the 5 trebuchets mounted on wheels. This allowed them to be moved freely and to change the locations in which their payloads would land. Also knowing that their enemy would be predominately foot, he had adjusted the payload of the trebuchets. Instead of the large stones they usually fired, they would be firing smaller stones mixed in with shards of metal and glass. The citadel had taught that this type of payload was far more effective against infantry and as the battle was not to take place at the walls it suited his needs perfectly. Damen explained the plan to his lieutenants as follows. “Our trebuchts give us the advantage of distance. Once in range of the enemy we will commence firing. Each of the 5 trebuchets will be protected by a group of 10 unsullied and 10 archers each. Their shields should be able to deflect any oncoming fire from our enemy and the archers will offer good mid-range support. As the battle goes on, if the enemy tries to withdraw outside of the range of the trebuchets we will wheel them forward and continue to pummel them. If they decide to retreat within the walls then we will switch to larger stones and work at destroying the city. That being said from what I have heard of their commander, they are more likely to try to find a way to come at us then retreat, and we must be prepared for any attack. The wings of our force will be made up of two groups of 25 each of the Knights of Flowers. They must protect each flank, and make sure that no one gets around us to the outside. The center of the formation will be made up of the phalanx that the White Bull used at the Grassy Vale (I have outlined it below again for your reference), it will be made up of 200 unsullied and 100 archers and will be led by myself on foot. Ser Redwyne will command the reserve from the hill behind us. It will be made up of the remaining 50 unsullied and Knights of Flowers. Alfred it is imperative that you wait for my call, unless you see me fall. If I fall then it is on you to lead the forces.” “I do Damen but that will not be necessary for today victory will be ours.” With that the lieutenants dispatched to their posts. Damen moved to the head of the phalanx and drew Heartsbane. He brought it down in a sweeping motion as he yelled for the trebuchets to begin firing, and watched as the first payloads began to fly through the air. The battle for Lord Harroway’s town was on. (Outlines only the phalanx in the middle. Trebuchets are set up two on each flank and one directly behind this phalanx.) "You arrived just in time, Sir," called Stevar Tully, commander of the Bannermen of Riverrun, as Grouthe approached the force gathered before the city. "Indeed," replied Grouthe, dismounting and peering across the fields to the Southern host. "What news from Saltpans?" asked Stevar, dismounting as well and striding towards Grouthe. "The battle was only just beginning when I departed. It could go either way." "We will prevail, I am sure. Here as well." "If the gods are just. What does their force look like?" "Smaller than ours. Their trebuchets are the main problem." He gestured to where the war machines were being wheeled into place. "I trust you can handle them." "You have a plan, then?" Grouthe nodded, climbing back atop his horse and steering it toward the front of the defender's force, gesturing for Stevar to follow. The unit commanders were already gathered in wait. "This is not the way I would prefer to fight this battle," he said to them, "but there aren't alot of alternatives, and alot less good ones. I trust you have observed their trebuchets? Then you know that that threat must be eradicated. This is how it shall proceed, then: "Cavalry, you will accompany the Bannermen on the right flank. When you draw close to the enemy, you will break off and make straight for the trebuchets. They will no doubt be defended, but, then again, I know of few forces that can stand against the Bannermen of Riverrun, and I see none of these among the enemy's legions. "The front lines will be composed of men at arms, supported from behind by pikes. Archers, you will march in the center of the formation, flanked by the rest of the pikes. Crossbows will be the farthest forward, firing at the enemy's front lines. The bulk of the archers will fire volleys into the enemy's center. Arryns, you will be focusing on picking off priority targets. Unit commanders, enemy archers, and the like. Understood?" There were no objections. Grouthe dismissed them and turned to the main force. "The enemy approaches. You have your orders.Lord Vandelay is counting on you. The Riverlands are counting on you. The Blacks march upon the Twins. Lord Reven himself assaults Saltpans. We are the third head of the Trident. We will hold. Now, move out!" Damen stood at the head of the phalanx, awaiting the enemy onslaught. Their force was larger, but he liked his chances. He loved to counter-attack, and the trebuchets with their distance advantage had forced the enemy to come to him. He watched as their payloads of small stones and shards of metal and glass ripped into the enemy ranks. Their men at arms had shields, which helped, and the armor of the Bannermen was nearly impenetrable as the plate was so thick that the payloads although powerful did little damage to them. The archers and pike on the other hand would have a much harder time. Damen marveled at the efficiency of the trebuchet’s operators. In battle all those years of training took over, and his men were able to act quickly and without thinking. The White Bull would accept nothing less, and Damen quietly thanked him for that. The enemy archers were not yet in range, but they would be shortly. Damen looked to the wings and saw that the enemy cavalry, lead by the Bannermen were moving quickly on the left flank. His two trebuchets on that side were defended by 10 unsullied and ten archers each and that appeared to be where the cavalry was heading. Those defenses, along with the 25 Knights would have to do their best to hold the enemy charge. Damen changed his focus to his right flank. The enemy appeared to have concentrated all of their cavalry on their right side leaving the 25 Knights on Damen’s right flank. They must hit the enemies men at arms from the side, he thought, but as he did so the call went up. “Shields!!!” The enemies first volley was upon them. Damen ducked between the shields of the Unsullied on either side of him. Lets see how the Old Bull’s formation works against some real competition. From the reserve Alfred took in everything. On the left side one hundred cavalry lead by the heavily armored Bannermen were heading straight for the two trebuchets on that side. The archers defending the trebs, had concentrated their fire on the cavalry and the Unsullied had dug in with their shields and long spears. The 25 Knights on the flank had concentrated their charge on the lighter cavalry, and although out numbered there by a two to one margin, they were more than holding their own. On the right flank the 25 knights had faced no opposition. Alfred watched as the Knights moved to the outside and began to loop towards the rear of the enemy formation. This accomplished a few things. First, it allowed the trebuchets to continue launching their payloads at the enemy lines without having to worry about hitting their own men, and secondly it gave them an opportunity to get at the archers and the fabled men of the Vale. It would take them a while to get there, but by the time they did, their force should be able to wreak havoc at the enemy rear. The best part of this maneuver was that no one had ordered it. The knight leading the right flank had seen the opportunity and just went for it, which was a good thing as the order from Damen my never have come, as Alfred could see turning his attention to the center of the battle. In the center the phalanx was working as planned, but was under very heavy fire from the enemy archers. With two Unsullied for every archer, they were easily able to give the archers cover from the enemy fire under their large shields, and the beauty of the formation was that it allowed for return fire as well. The archers of Oldtown were getting their shots of in between enemy volleys, and Alfred watched almost mesmerized as the ducked then fired. Duck, fire, duck, fire, duck, fire. The rhythm was steady, constant, perfect, and while they were taking some damage, the formation was working splendidly at limiting the effect of the enemy arrows. The enemy formation was almost on the phalanx, the reserve would not be needed as of yet, but with the size and tenacity of the enemy forces Alfred knew that he would be called on shortly. In the center Damen mentally prepared himself. He caught sight of the enemy in snippets, as the duck and fire rhythm had him behind a shield every few seconds. Each time he looked they were closer, and before he knew it they would on them. He could feel the energy from Heartsbane running through his veins, it would be put to good use today and many Rivermen would die for their wretched alliance with the scum of the Iron Islands. |

Grouthe watched with a grudging respect as the enemy archers fell into their rhythm of hiding behind Unsullied shields as arrows came at them, then popping up to fire their own. To increase his own archers effectiveness and help his infantry reach the enemy lines, he would have to disrupt that rhythm. "Archers!" he shouted. "Cease volleys; fire at will!" The waves of missiles ceased, replaced by a constant, random barrage. Many of the enemy archers would be caught off guard, revealing themselves to fire only to be hit themselves. This new tactic also increased their overall rate of fire, especially for the skilled Men of the Vale. They looked like machines, firing unbelievably fast. The sound of hooves to his right reminded Grouthe of the other pressing matter, that of the Knights riding to flank him. He had expected such a tactic, and had a counter prepared. "Pikes on the outer flanks, move to rear!" he shouted. Two columns of pikemen shifted positions, forming two rows behind the archers. "Rear archers, prepare for assault from behind!" He had shouted only to warn them, and thus they did not cease firing to the front; but they were ready to turn and fire on the Knights at any time. At the front, meanwhile, his men-at-arms, now only seconds from the enemy ranks, had formed a wedge; this, coupled with the pikemen's change in position had altered the overall shape of their formation from a block to more of a thick spear: the spear with which they would pierce the enemy lines. That left only the final piece of the puzzle: the cavalry speeding towards the enemy trebuchets. The siege engines, with ammunition adapted to a battle in an open field, had taken their toll on his forces, the archers at center in particular. Grouthe was relieved that their threat would be eliminated soon, for he had no doubt that the cavalry would succeed in their task. The men-at-arms and Unsullied were mere yards away; the Bannermen were closing in on the Trebuchets, and the Knights from behind his force. Three components of the battle that would come to a head in seconds; in Grouthe's mind taking shape as the three points of the Trident, piercing the heart of the Southron that had invaded their land. |
