Defending battalions:
2 Men-at-arms

The scorching sun rains down mercilessly on the desert sands, earning Hellholt its namesake. And with the coming battle, it will likely earn it again before the day ends.

Havlan stared at the enemy line with one hand lifted over his eyes to block the sun. It had only been a few days since the miraculous route and assassination back at Sunspear, and so much had happened. The common folk were hailing the few hundred men who came from the Vale as heroes, and the men from Dorne who had bravely readied themselves to defend their homes weren’t much less. Also, Havlan Tyndall and Reman Hollis were to receive lordships for their planning and execution of the assassination and following route. The 15 Men of the Vale and veterans that sprung the trap at the same time of the assassination, had been knighted if they weren’t already, and they all now wear the dark navy cloaks of Cenedil’s personal guard.

Things had even changed symbolically. The House Ertulcien banner had always flown a brown eagle with golden specks over a river of blue. After the victory at Sunspear the townsfolk had begun calling him the desert eagle, so to raise morale even higher, Cenedil had changed his flag to an eagle flying over a sea of sand.

With all of that happening, Havlan could hardly believe that a city nearby would remain neutral, but here they were, about to take another neutral city. Havlan stirred from his thoughts as he heard Reman’s horse come trotting up behind him. After saluting and waiting for the man to casually return the salute, Havlan said, “Simple plan for a simple battle. Have the Men of the Vale do one volley and then hammer on them.”

Reman gave him a moment before saying, “Understood”, saluting and riding off to the men. In a few moments Reman assembled the men and began marching them toward the point where they would set up. Once they were in range, but still a very good distance from the enemy, the Unsullied kneeled, and the archers planted a handful of arrows and notched on onto their bows. Moments later, a shout filled the air, “Draw! Loose!”

The commander watched as the opposing archers halted and let fly. He had head that these so called "Men of the Vale" had incredible range with the bow, but this was ridiculous. The wind was against them and they were barely specs in his sight across the sandy battlefield. He and his men watched as a flood of arrows like dark cloud arched over the field and towards them. Are they mad to waste so many arrows with no chance of reaching their target, he thought. If these Arryns are this stupid then we may have a chance in this battle after all.

The commander began to laugh, and the men around him watching the same sight and with similar thoughts began to laugh as well. They laughed that is until the commander, still laughing, watched the men to his left and right drop suddenly to the ground. Others fell quickly as the dark cloud descended upon them. Thinking quickly the commander knew their was only one option. They could not outrun these men of the Vale, and if they stayed where they were they would all end up riddled with arrows.

"Charge," he screamed to his men, and so they did. The ragged group of infantry began to run across the desert field hoping to close the range as quickly as possible and to get out of the path of the deadly arrows.

Havlan watched as the Men of Vale put arrow after arrow down the field, and he even began to laugh when he saw the men begin to charge. The poor men didn’t even know that a shield advance was the only thing that would get them close. Still, he thought and stopped chuckling, Best not to lose if I can help it.

Meanwhile Reman Hollis stood at the front of the famed archers showing that he deserved to be there. The stream continued and he watched as the shattered force approached the unsullied front line. With that he raise his right hand a yelled, “final volley!”. In a second all of the men fired their last arrow and waited for the count.

The enemy was approaching fast now.

“Notch. Draw. Loose!”

The White Bull

He was running so hard that he barely noticed the change. Suddenly the air had become quiet. The buzz of arrows had come to a stop as they were now too close for the archers to shoot at them effectively. He pulled up and blew two blasts on his horn. Hearing the signal his men, who now numbered less than one hundred formed a wedge.

He had always heard that Unsullied could stand up to any charge, and now he was about to find out. He moved to the head of the wedge. They did not have a chance to win, he knew, but at least they could die with some honor. If they were lucky, they might even get the opportunity to cut there way through to the cowards who had riddled them with arrows. He gave his horn one long last blast, a swan song if you will, and led the charge into the Unsullied. If the Arryns were to truly conquer Dorne, he had no desire to be there to see it.

Havlan watched the men blow the horn and smiled, the man would be his first kill. Moving quickly he positioned himself where the wedge was about to hit and prayed that the wedge would be disorganized enough that shattering it would be no problem. Before the enemy hit he yelled, “Brace!” The Unsullied locked shields and shoved hard against oncoming force.

While the enemy rammed the front line Ramen and the Men of the Vale began to form a perimeter around the chaos. When everyone was in position Havlan yelled, “Hit anyone who gives you a good shot, use your good judgment.” The men all readied their bows and anytime the defenders rallied a few arrows would fix the cluster. It wouldn’t be much longer.

As the commander led the wedge he noticed a large man step out toward the front of the Unsullied. He was clearly not one of the Unsullied, and appeared to dressed in very expensive armour. Well at least I'll get the chance to kill a lord today, he thought, raising his sword above his head. He brought it down in a vicious swipe, but missing his target. His body began to turn to try to find the enemy that he had missed, but it was his last move. With the movement his head fell off of his shoulders, as Havlan's blade had cut straight through his neck.

Needless to say the battle did not fare any better for the commanders men.

Cenedil takes Hellholt.

Losses: None

Reasons: Well played, interesting, yada, yada, yada. Nicely done!

The Grand Library will be updated.
