Defending battalions:
1 Men-at-arms
1 Archers

It is a bright, but windy day at Grassy Vale. The gusts carry a slight chill to them, as well as a subtle howl: signs the defenders took as eerie omens of the battle to come.

The White Bull

The White Bull had not been in the field in a long while, as he had left the majority of battles up to his very capable Lieutenants, but now he was needed. Word had just come that Kings Landing had been taken by the Lord Manderly, and if he could secure the Grassy Vale in short order, it would allow them to run their supply lines all the way from Old Town to White Harbor. And so he had taken it upon himself to win this pivotal battle. He brought with him a unit of Unsullied and some Archers of Oldtown as his scouts had said the vale would only be lightly defended.

As he surveyed the field he was intrigued, by the makeup of the opposing army. He had recently been in discussions with Archmaester Edric regarding a new formation that was thought up by some of the students at the Citadel war college. If it worked it would allow the unsullied to move forward with the archers alongside them, softening up enemy defenses while they advanced upon them, and without the threat of hitting their own men. It would also allow their archers to work with protection from the enemy archers by way of the unsullied’s large shields. Have diagramed the formation below with each X representing an unsullied and each A representing an archer.

The archers would fire a volley and then march forward 3 paces in rank and file with the unsullied. When enemy volleys were fired the Unsullied would raise their large shields creating a turtle like shell which protected both them and the archers in between. When the formation got close enough that the enemy archers could not fire at them accurately they would charge, the unsullied with their spears and short swords, and the archers falling back as much as possible and fighting with their short swords. The White bull moved to the front of the formation and called for his archers. “Notch, draw, loose,” he bellowed in rapid succession. As soon as the first volley had been launched they began their march.

The commander of Grassy Vale's forces watched, perplexed, as the enemy filed into a formation he had never seen used. It would render his archers nearly useless, which was devastating in a fight in the enemy already held the advantage with such a disciplined, experienced infantry. He had to think of something.

"Infantry, hold positions, shields up! Defend the archers!" The enemy archers could not possibly be planning to march into the front lines. There would have to be a point when they pulled back to allow the Unsullied to advance alone. At that moment their formation would be disorderly: weak. That was when he would order the charge. It was the only chance he had.

The White Bull

The formation advanced with excellent results, peppering the enemy with volley after volley. They had forced the enemy into an entirely defensive position and were receiving minimal return fire from the opposing archers, while inflicing damage on their opponent throughout the march. It was now time to truly put the formation to the test.

The beauty of the formation was in it's symertry. On the White Bulls call all of the archers froze and launched one final volley. It was now time for the unsullied to act, and their impeccable discipline would be called into play. The unsullied advanced at 45 degree angles through the channels created by the stationary archers and formed into lines on each of the flanks. A space was left in the middle and after the unsullied had advanced the archers moved in behind this space creating a corridor through which they could continue their fire. The White Bull then led the left flank as the unsullied began thier charge with both flanks angling to converge at the center. (I have diagramed below the look of the formation immediately prior to the unsullied charge)
