1 pikemen
1 men-at-arms

Victorian Harroway paced nervously in front of his pikes and men-at-arms. The heat was greater than any he and his men could have ever dreamed, and it was showing by the sweat poring off of them. They had been sent to these battlefield as a last attempt to make the Lord of Oldtown pay for every inch, and Cenedil and all of the iron men knew that one battalion of knights would be returning to Oldtown.

After a few more minutes of studying the field in front of the city, Victorian raised his hand and watched all of his men flow into position. Once they were correctly positioned he began “As you all know, we have been called to give Lord Cenedil a chance, and if our allies from Dorne and the Vale are successful at the capital, are successfully the knights of the Trident can win the war with less… problems. I’m not one for speeches, but I can do basic math and reasoning. We’re fighting 50 horsemen with 50 pikes and 100 foot. On top of that we are in a sandy field, which will make them tread carefully with their precious horses. I don’t know about you, but I think we should have no problem here. Those “knights” had better hurry up because I’m ready to return to Sunspear for a feast!” With that all of the Ironmen replied with a hearty “Yeah!”

After reaching Yronwood, following the epic collapse of the assault on Sunspear, Ser Willas Flowers had grabbed a fresh mount and headed immediately to Lemonwood. The Knights had been sent their without a commander, expecting to take the town without a fight, and when they had arrived to see 150 Iron Born they had stalled. When Willas arrived he immediately called all of his men together.

"Many of you came expecting an easy victory. I know that the scouts said there would be no opposition, and that your thoughts were on strong Dornish wine and salty Dornish whores, but that is not to be the case. And I for one am happy about it. What we will get instead today is glory. We are outnumbered three to one, and the sand will slow our horses yes, but we are the most well trained knights in the realm. Our opponents are some lousy infantry and a unit of pikemen." As he spoke his voice rose, and the men began to cheer. "When we are done and have freed Dorne from the Arryns their will be more wine and women than you can imagine, and both will be given to us freely. For we are the Beauty of Battle, the Fragrance of Victory and the Wave of Thorns. We are the Knights of Flowers and no Ironmen can stand in our path." The Knights erupted, clashing their weapons against shields and chanting for Ser Flowers. "Now form up, and let’s put the iron back in the ground where it belongs!"

Willas had half of the Knights dismount and form a wedge. The other half remained mounted and formed into 3 lines to the right of the formation. The Knights on foot began to advance, but Willas held the mounted ones in reserve for the time being.

When Victarion saw the enemy dismount he sucked in his breath. The men on foot would complicate things more than a suicide charge, but he was still prepared for it. After taking a moment to put the plan to words he yelled, “Foot, spread out thinly in a U. You outnumber them on foot 4 to 1 so flank as soon as you can. Pikes remain in reserve until your new commander says otherwise.”

The moment the men heard the words they ran into position and formed up. When the men were formed Victorian went and ordered the men to present the youngest one in the ranks. When the young soldier, nothing more than a boy, walked up Victarion asked, “Name and age, son”.

“Thalas Sea, Sir!” the boy answered short and crisp.

“Thalas, I know you want to be in the heat of this battle, but I need for you to carry out the most important part of the plan. I am giving you charge of the pikes. When you see the horses move toward the battle, I want you to move to intercept them. Until then, I want the pikes to remain a few paces behind the frontline. Do you understand?”

After a moments silence the youth answered, “Yes Sir!”

“Very well,” With that Victarion moved into the boy’s spot at the back of the U. “Men advance!”

Willas saw that the enemy pike appeared to be holding back as the 25 unhorsed knights approached in the wedge formation with the 3 lines of cavalry on their right. He wished that Donnell was here with him along with some of his famed Archers of Oldtown. With them he could have forced a charge from the opponent, and the battle would have been easy but he would have to make due. The battle would be touch and go, but his troops were the best of the best and he had faith in them.

The wedge seeing the enemy formation immediately went for the right side of it. If they charged the middle of it they would be surrounded, but attacking the right side would allow them to concentrate all of their force on a smaller number of foot. One of the lines of mounted knights fell in directly behind the wedge and would be there to fight off any of the enemy foot trying to flank them from the left. They dropped their lances and moved to swords, maces, morningstars and warhammers, as they would now most likely be fighting from a defensive posture.

The other two lines of mounted knights on horseback continued to charge the right flank with their lances. They could see the pikemen moving to face their charge, but if they could get around them to the outside and behind them, their pikes would turn from an asset to a liability. (I have outlined the entire formation described above below. H's represent mounted knights and F's represent the men on foot with a W representing Willas Flowers. Each letter represents one knight. Each - represents an open spot in the formation.)

Willas smiled as his right flank tried to swoop around the pike and he led the men on foot rammed into the right side of the U. At the citadel, the fighting style of the Knights of Flowers was always referred to as symphonic. Each knight had been trained in the use of all major weapons from a young age, but would choose their finest before being anointed. And so he lifted his bastard sword and brought it down as he crashed into an Ironman on foot. Around him his brethren fought with two handed greatswords, warhammers, morningstars and even an occasional trident. They had trained together for so long that their movements strongly complemented each other, and the field soon ran red with blood. If the gods favored him today, the glory would be his, and the White Bull had always recognized those who performed well under the banners of Oldtown.

The wedge, predictably drove at one side of the reverse wedge. When that happened Victarion yelled, “right flank, halt! Left flank, mass and drive into them.” the sweat was running down the Iron Born’s face now that this crucial moment was upon him. The goal was for the right flank to take a defensive stance while the left flank formed up and stuck hard into the unprepared side of the wedge. The down side was that the men on foot weren’t well trained in formations, but they pulled off the maneuver with a relatively good amount of success. If the men preformed properly the enemy left would be devastated and partially surrounded, and it doesn’t matter how good you are with a blade when you are surrounded and
outnumbered more than 3 to 1.

When the men hit, Victarion let out a blood curdling roar and went to work with his two axes that had given him a well respected name on the islands. Soon chaos reigned over the battlefield, and the sides combined to clang of steel. Once the left collided the men spilled around each other trying establish a flank, and moments later the right slammed in and began to work their way around the tip of the wedge. What the knights had in finesse the Iron born had in numbers and brute force.

While the fight between the forces on foot raged, another battle was going on between the cavalry and the pikes trying to buy their counterparts time to finish the smaller force. In the chaos Thalas had nearly forgot his responsibility, and he felt completely ridiculous when he yelled, “pikes form a line on the left flank, and follow the cavalry around we have enough to put 2 men on each horse, so don’t let them get around you!” Who were these trained and full grown men to follow someone just older than a boy, but surprisingly to Thalas they reacted and followed his commands without hesitation. Soon the pikes had formed a perimeter halfway around the main force and between cavalry.

(I would outline mine, but Im having trouble with numbers and all of that. Basically it is a V with some of the botum filled in and the left section extended more than the right, and the pikes are off to the side of the cavalry and they are formed on half of the V and following the cavalry.)

The line of mounted knights, made up of one third of the total mounted, had been placed behind those on foot specifically for the purpose of countering the enemy's left flank. They moved to intercept the enemy force that drove hard at the left side of the knights on foot. Although they were outnumbered significantly on that flank, they were mounted, well trained and incredibly comfortable with the battle style of each other. It would be difficult, but from the looks of things the left flank might hold.

With their left side somewhat protected by the mounted knights and the remainder of the mounted knights on the right drawing the attention of the pikes, Willas found himself in the center of the battle and at the head of the wedge. As he cut his way through the enemy forces he heard the deafening scream of an Iron Born, and looked up to see a fierce warrior battling knights with two huge axes. Willas immediately changed course and headed straight for this fierce warrior. Cut off the head and the body will die, he thought to himself. That lesson had been drilled into his head at Oldtown. He knew that this man was their leader, by the way that he carried himself, barked commands and handled his fearsome axes. He also knew that if he could best him in one on one battle the opponent would likely break and flee. Willas felt that this one on one confrontation could easily determine the outcome of the battle.

On the right flank things were not going as smoothly. The sand had slowed the horses down, and the pikes had rushed from the reserve position to meet their charge. As directed the two lines went as wide as possible trying to capture the flank and give themselves the opportunity to hit the pikes from the back and to eventually move to the infantry in the center as well. As they were set up in lines they would hit the pike in two waves. The first wave lowered their lances and charged full on taking out as many pike as possible. They crashed into the line many unhorsed and a some hit directly with pikes. Those unhorsed rose quickly to battle the men on foot, hoping that the pikes would now act as a disadvantage for their opponents in such close quarters.

The second line hit shortly after, attempting to get around the outside of the enemy formation, and through any gaps that may have been created when the first line hit. They used their lances on the initial pass, and once through, those that made it, dropped their lances in favor of swords, axes or morningstars, turning to attack the pikemen from the back.

As the sun hit it's apex young Willas Flowers, the bastard of Highgarden, found himself face to face with Victarion about to engage in a battle that would likely decide the day.

As the second wave horses charged, one voice rang out clear among the pikes, and that voice was that one of Thalas Sea. “Hold the line! Replace those with broken pikes, and for the Drowned God’s sakes get rid of the men on foot!” the youth’s voice rang out, but the men were doing this instinctively already. Those with broken pikes drew their swords preparing to attack any knight that approached while more pike men rushed to fill their position. By the time the second charge hit, the line was somewhat repaired and braced for the impact. Once the charge was done, it would be a weak force of pike men against a small force of Knights. Thalas could only pray that enough knights had been killed or disorganized in the charge to give them a chance.

Meanwhile, the left flank was having some deal of trouble pushing against the knights on horseback, but after the initial shock of finding the cavalry in the back, the men were regaining their wits and attempting to unhorse the few. They did have a few advantages though. One, the opponent was on horse back with limited reach on their short weapons. Two, the horsemen had no room to charge or maneuver, which was the primary reason for being horsed.

All the while, the main force, with the leadership of Victarion Harroway, was pushing hard at the knights. If the inspiring figure of Victarion wasn’t present, the battle might have been a lot different, but the men found new levels of courage when they looked to the man and began to fight even harder. After a few moments of the chaos, Victarion noticed a single figure approaching him and quickly finished off the knight he had knocked on the ground. Victarion guessed that the man was an important figure, if not the Knight’s leader and gladly strode forward to meet him. The Iron Born preferred skirmishes to full out battles.

(sorry for the delays)
