2 Men-at-arms
60

The field is sandy and the Gods apparently had some grace as far as the heat of the day goes. The 200 men-at-arms are standing outside the city formed up, and listening to their commander.

Donnell Grey was an archer by trade. But he was also a Lieutenant, trained in the Citadel and very comfortable with Unsullied tactics and commanding men. And he also happened to be needed. With The White Bull in Oldtown, The Young Bull leading a retreat in the west, Damen Tarly preparing for a war in the west and Willas Flowers leading the efforts at Lemonwood, he was the only real option for command.

Donnell sized up the opposition. 200 men at arms, well they have the numbers, but I can't remember the last time that unsupported men at arms were able to defeat Unsullied. If only it were hotter. Wasn't this hell hole supposed to be an oven. Although it was warm it was not blazing as usual and Donnell knew that heat would only add to the Unsullied's advantage in skill.

He formed the Unsullied into squares of 4 (each represented by an X below, blank spaces in the formation will be denoted by a -), and set an unbalanced line, heavily favoring the right flank. Once assembled they began their march on the foe, as always in lockstep and perfect formation.

(Formation described above with row of seven squares leading the row of 18 squares)

Harin Sand stood in front the Iron Born and a few of his own men from Sunspear calculating the battle to come. Standing at 6’5, with dark skin, long black hair, and a gaunt face Harin looked more like a leader than most men. He was a bastard in Sunspear who worked his way up the ranks of the city guard. When lord Cenedil took over, Harin was more than happy to serve and every day the city looked better for his lack of resistance. Now that Sunspear had been cleaned up so much, Harin was more than happy to lead his men against a force that was evenly matched with his own.

When the Unsullied marched into view Harin studied them carefully, and when they formed up he altered his plan according and yelled, “Do you see our enemies. The bastards everywhere are looking at this as a battle we cannot win. The Unsullied you see know only battle, and for that we have been all but looked over, but I tell you that is not so. We have advantages that the Unsullied,” Harin spat out the name, “Can’t even comprehend. We have families, we have numbers, we have homes!… we have a CAUSE!” The men let out a hearty roar. When the men settled Harin said, “I don’t know about you, but I’m not about to let things with fewer emotions than a wight take away what matters most to me!” The men went into another frenzy.

Minutes after the speech the men were formed up with the men who fought defensively and used shields on the right flank. The left flank was spread thin in hopes to swing around a gain a flank on the Unsullied. They might not be as well trained, but they had a purpose.

It was said that a charge by the unsullied brandishing spears, could be almost as deadly as one led by cavalry, and Donnell was about to find out how true that theory was. "Raise spears," he called out as his men began to close ground. "Prepare to charge. We're going to hit this scum with everything we've got. After the initial onslaught, switch to short swords as they'll be much more effective in close quarters, and for heavens sake keep going until you breakthrough." The goal of the "heavy right" formation was to crush the enemies left flank. Once the flank had been breached the unsullied could begin to move towards the left hitting the enemy lines from the side and back.

Donnell watched as the unsullied charged, heavy spears raised, and crashed into the enemy flank. It appeared that the opponent had put most of there best defenders there, but Donnell hoped and believed that he had had enough strength to break them. The field erupted with the sounds of war, and he knew that it would not be long before he found out. Mounted on his black destrier he rode over towards the right side of the battle to get a better look at the action and to prepare for any adjustments he might have to make.

Harin smiled when he saw that the Unsullied were going to charge. Everyone knew unsullied were better on defense. After a moment he yelled, “Raise shield, and hold the line if you cant do anything else! As soon as they hit collapse on them and get a heavy flank! They aren’t even playing their greatest strength which only helps us.” With that he thrust the banner into the ground, drew his sword, and let out a battle cry as he braced for impact.

When the Unsullied hit, several men went down, but many began pushing forward to take their place. While men were dying and being replaced, the flanks began to push hard and began to work their way around the Unsullied. The men were scared, but fear quickly became replaced with anger and the survival instinct.

While all the chaos was going on, Harin Sand moved among the defending flank, assisting any man locked in battle with an Unsullied. The man was an impressive sight, with his great sword taking down man after man. At the beginning the left flank had been faltering, but when they heard Harin’s booming voice and saw his impressive stature, that men began to rally and fight back. They had a cause.

The White Bull

The first wave of the Unsullied had charged the opponent with heavy spear in hand. While it was true that they were at their best defending, Donnell knew that the beauty of the Unsullied lay in their unmatched versatility and discipline. This discipline allowing them to execute even the most complex formations. While the atacking formaion looked simple, it required a lot of skil on the part of his men, and their execution had been splendid. The charge loossened up their ranks slightly as they crashed into the enemy foot, shattering shields and impaling ironmen wherever possible. But once the charge had been complete the Unsullied had dropped their spears and immediately went to work with their short swords.

Those Unsullied in the first wave whose charge had brought them all the way through the enemy lines formed into squares of four where possible. When not they formed into threes or fought as two side by side protecting their bretheren with their large shields and dealing death with surgeoun like precision from their shortswords. They moved to the left now, aiming to strike the enemy formation in the side and back, and giving a wide berth for the screaming giant Dornishman brandishing his greatsword.

Donnell from a nearby watched as the battle unfolded, loosing an arrow here or there where he though that he could sneak one in. His aim was accurate as always, but his shots were very limited as he did not want to risk hitting his own men. The first wave had been somewhat successful and the unsullied who had made it through were now reforming in the back as the second wave on the right and the main wave in the center clashed with the enemy foot.

While the first wave had hit at a full run with heavy spears the second had been moving more slowly. This allowed them to maintain a tighter formation, and to protect each other's flanks. Watching the first wave hit, they immediately began to look for areas where the enemy defense had been weakeded, trying to take any advantage that they could. Their discipline allowed them to be patient after the initial onslaught, slowing things down and moving in lockstep. The enemy came on like berserkers, full of passion and rage. While this made them seem inordinatley strong, and allowed them to hit the unsullied formations with massive amounts of force, it also left openings. The unsullied worked to isolate the ironmen when possible and to use the strength of the formation to overtake them.

Donnell watched as the unsullied who had lead the initial charge worked their way toward the left of the formation trying to meet the second wave of unsullied and crush the enemy infantry between them. As much as Donnell wanted to be at the heart of the action, he knew that he must remain on the outskirts of the battle. While his unsullied appeared to be gaining the upperhand due to their efficiency and the tightness of their formations, the battle was still far from certain. If his men were to prevail, the White Bull had to be informed at once via raven, but if the Ironborn were victorious then things would be much more difficult. In that case a raven could not be trusted and Donnelll would have to ride like the winds in hopes of bringing the news in person. Donnell saw an Ironman who had been isolated after appearing to bounce off of a square of unsullied. He sent an arrow straight and true. One less for my men to worry about, he thought, but will it be enough.
