Defending 1 Archers 30g It is a beautiful summer day in the Reach. The town of Crakehall is full of hustle and bustle, fixing the minor damage that had been done when the White Bull’s army dispatched of the rebels. The people look happy and seem inspired by their new ruler. To the naked eye there appears to be no force defending them from the evil Iron hammer waiting to crush them. Many of the villagers are as they appear, farmers, masons, tradesmen, women and some children, but if one were to look closely, they might notice that not all of the villagers are working to fix the town. Some are up in trees, others hidden in shadows, alleys, shops and houses. These are archers of Oldtown, well trained with the bow, and capable with the short sword when needed. Their goal is to defend these noble people against the most vile pollutant known to man, Iron!! |

Marching with the men-at-arms on the outside and the archers on the inside. The Bannermen were riding in front. Ser Robert Black had his orders.'Take the town...if they fight back raze it.' It had been a simple plan that Robert hopes will go simply. "Were is the White Bull?"He asked over to his sister"I wanted to test my ax against his sword." With a Chuckle and a sigh" Wheres the Tarly lad with Heart's Bane in hand."He then shakes his ax hanging form his saddle" Black Tide against Heart's Bane, what a dual it would be" Valyrian steel was rare and few had been made into anything but a sword but the house of Black had managed to get their hands on a Ax made from the rare steel. "Well luckily, they are not here and we got a nice fat fruit left unguarded." When they came insight of the town she ordered off a few scouts to look for anything dangerous but by the looks of things that was doubtful. |

Danny Blackpear was of common birth. Born to a pear farmer in Goldengrove, who's had ancestors had apparently had a problem keeping their produce fresh. This problem had long been fixed by the time Danny was born, but the name had stuck, and his family was now very proud of it. In his younger years Danny had realized that he was not very good at farming, and that in fact he found it very boring. In past generations, no one would have gave a damn, and Danny would have become a pear farmer like the rest of his family. He would most likely have become a drunk due to his poor skills at his work, and would have blamed the gods for his hopeless lot in life. But the Reach, and Westeros were not as they used to be. In the time of the White Bull, any man with any ability was welcome to come to Oldtown, and study at the Citadel. Danny had chosen the war college, and shown a profficciency for archery, and it was not long before he had become one of the fabled archers of Oldtown. Their range was not as good as the Men of the Vale, and their skill with the short sword not as adept either, but they were a force to be reckoned with and renowned in Oldtown and throughout the Reach onl behind the fabled KNights of Flowers. And so here he was in Crakehall, only one town away from Goldengorve where he grew up. He was not dressed in his shining uniform, but instead a cloak, long enough to cover his bow and sword. He was standing outside of a farm house on the outskirts of town and as he had been ordered, pretending to have a discussion with the farmer about finding some work. The orders had come from the Young Bull himself, Ser Luther Hightower, and they were not easy orders. "Archers of Oldtown, the mission I lay before you is a very difficult one, andone that you do not have to accept. We have word that the Reach is about to be invaded from the North, by the Iron scum who currently rule at the Trident. You must delay them here at Crakehall for as long as you possibly can. You have all been trained in covert, and house to house combat, at the Citadel and that is the type of battle you will be required to fight. The ravens we have received tell us that Lord Black is marching with almost all of his strength. 200 Men at Arms, 100 Archers, and the famed heavy horse of Riverrun. Against them you will only be 50. Kill as many of their units as possible. Make them attack us with their full force if possible. Draw them into the streets and woods where their numbers will become a disadvantage for them. You must hold them, at all costs for as long as you can. Renforcements may come, but there is a good chance they will be too late. Many if not most of you will die here, but remember what you are fighting for. No more status being based on who your parents are. No more paying taxes to Lords simply because of their name. No more working for men who you are more able than. If the Iron scum take this town they will raze it. They will rape, kill, pillage and burn. You are all that the people of Crakehall have. Will you accept this challenge? Will you oppose the Iron scum? Will you live and die as heroes? As the archers of Oldtown?" The roar had been defeaning, and Danny did not have to think twice abut his decision. The entire battalion had decided to stay, drunk on the words and the ideals of the Young Bull. And now as he stood on the farmers porch, long after the moment had passed, he still felt as passionately about what he was doing, and did not regret his decision onebit. He would show these Iron scum what it meant to be a free man of Oldtown. He saw some dust flying on the road as a man in full armor was heading toward town. The rider was clearly dressed in the colors of the Trident. Danny quickly slipped his bow out from under his cloak, notched an arrow and aimed it at the head of the rider. Like he had done so many times in practice at the Citadel. The rider was passing and paying no attention to the varant talking with the farmer. As Danny let the arrow fly, he hoped it's flight would be true and result in a riderless horse and one less ironman. Similar situations were taking place all throughout Crakehall. The archers trying to eliminate the scouts one by one. |

The riders heavy armor to the arrow but it still drove the wind out of him and forced him from his horse. Ser Drake was a minor knight but his skill as a Bannermen of Riverrun was great. Rolling to his feet and lifting up his shield and preparing for a second arrow Drake used his free hand to blow two short bursts on his horn. Two blasts for enemy in hiding. The Iron men would not get caught off guard this time and they would not have another ambush like the one at Lannisport. Looking around for the attacker, and then and seeing the man on the porch. Drake began to advance but as he began to move a sharp pain in his ankle brought him down. His ankle was broken from the fall and he watched in slow motion as the enemy archer drew back his bow and fired his bow. With his dieing breath Drake began to sing his own funeral song. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Joy heard the blasts and watched as two of her riders came back."Were is Drake?" When no reply came with a muffled curse she turned to her men. "Men of the Iron Islands we have lost a man. Ser Drake one of our finest has been taken out by trickery!" She heard some curses and could feel the anger from the men who saw ambushes and such below them."Ser Drake's death gave us some knowledge of our enemy. Knowledge that we can use against them and beat them." "Archers i want you to light some fire arrows and begin to burn those houses from a distance. We know they have men in the town but not how many. Men-at-arms keep your shields high and keep your eyes open. Cavalry we can't use you in the streets you will hold reserve and dismount so you can be used when we need you." Joy knew that this was no war against rebels these men would fight and they would fight hard. She also knew that her Iron men were ready. |

The farmer ran screaming from his house as the thatched roof caught fire. Similar sites could be seen all along the northern part of town where the enemy troops were marching in. The Young Bull cursed. I had hoped that the Ironmen would not resort to fire, due to the fact that many innocents would be put in harms way. If they had tried to come in, and battle us in a street to street battle the human shield could have given us a huge advantage, as they would have had to come house to house to root us out, thought the White Bull. Unfortunately for him fire would eliminate much of their tactical advantage, and on top of that, if his contingency plan did not work, many innocent lives would be lost today and that blood would be on his hands. The townspeople had been made aware of the plan. At the first sign of fire they were to head to leave what they were doing and head south. The Young Bull and his guard would meet them there, and when enough had arrived they would begin the trek to Old Oak. The majority of the elderly and children along with about half of the women had already started on that path a few days hence, with many of the towns stores carried in carts and wagons. They new that it would be a long tough Journey, but they had come to believe in the Hightowers and what they stood for. They we willing to give up their homes for the chance at a better life in the future, one that they did not believe that they could live under Lord Black. The Young Bull, and a the few knights in his guard waited till the majority of the townspeople had come. Some had decided to stay to defend their homes and help his archers, but they were unskilled, ill equipped and posed little to no threat to the Blacks. The villagers traveling with the Bull, were traveling light and should be able to move quickly. The other good news was that there were no reports of Ironmen on the southern side of the city. With any luck the Bull and the villagers would escape with little trouble. The march to Old Oak would be long, but they were up to the task, and Damen Tarly would be meeting them their after his victory at Goldengrove. Things were not going as well for the Hightowers in the Northern part of the city as they were going with the evacuation of the villagers. Each building that was torched by the Blacks was one less place for the archers to hide and shoot from, and for the most part the Ironborn were staying out of range. A few of the Archers of Oldtown, took shots when available. They tried to concentrate on the opposing archers who were dealing fire, but it was difficult to get them in range, so they found more and more of their time moving backwards, away from the conflagration, looking for an opportunity to make their stand. |

We did they have to hide behind their small folk? Joy thought. She really did distaste doing this but it seemed like the only choice to keep her men alive. The plan had been not to destroy the town unless they had to, They would leave the center of the town intact and destroy the outer parts to force the enemy to the middle were they could be encircled and killed from all sides. One of Joy's men shouted "Look!" they saw a plum of dust rising form the south as the villagers fled. "Leave them its just some common folk" Joy said and with a wave over her hand she began to give orders for the second part of the attack. Encircle the town, Archers keep up that fire when all that is left is the core i want the men-at-arms to advance from the sides while the banner ride down the mean rode quickly to take out what ever is on that rode and get out of their before their archers even see them." The Iron men advanced as the fires began to die out on the boarder houses and surprisingly a few arrows came out from houses. One man to a arrow to the thigh and was pulled out, Another took it into the gut and was most likely going to die. Joy her self was shot at but she managed to deflect the arrow off her shield. You'll pay for that She promised |

Danny was holed up in a half burnt house when another of his brethern. "It sounds like Ser Hightower was able to lead the villiagers away cleanly, but after that the Ironborn surrounded the city," the archer informed Danny. "So that eliminates any chance of us following them down the road to Old Oak now doesn't it," replied Danny. "Well if we're going to die lets take some of this Iron Scum with us. Remember to go for their men at arms. Their archers are still on the outskirts, and the Bannermen are in heavy plate so are arrows won't likely penetrate." They could hear the enemy approaching. Danny looked out the closest window, quickly picked out a footman and fired as his partner did the same. He did not even look to see if his arrow had been true as he ducked back behind the slight cover that he had. He notched another arrow, and prepared to pick out another target, sure that the battle was going much the same throughout the now war torn town. It looks like today is my day to die, he thought, but I'll be damned if I don't take some of this Iron Scum with me. |

Any other type of battle the Iron men would have had more trouble with, But this battle was fought almost like a raid with people in houses shooting down at them. the type of fight the iron men were used to. The Iron men quickly got close to the house they were to break into, and walked along its side so they would take arrow fire from only one side. Holding their shields to the side away from the building gave them the best protection they could get. The archers fired at every window they saw giving the enemy as little time as possible to fire back, and with twice the amount of archers that could be done. How ever even with their bravery and normal experience with this type of fighting the iron men took arrows from hidden archers. How ever soon enough when the men-at-arms began to enter the houses it would be over. Joy watched on from her horse and gathered up her Knights and dismounted. The Bannermen would storm the Town hall its self and take the most vital part of the town. |
