Verathoc the Lowly
|
Ravens flew from Storm's End this morning, flying far, carrying hundreds of copies of the same letter, desperate for all the folk of this great continent to receive the news of the King. Inside, the letter said this: In the name of Verathoc Baratheon, King of the Andals and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm, let the following announcement go forth. Westeros is at peace. No more shall we sleep in our beds fearful, worried if the sunrise that comes is to be our last. No more do we worry about leaving our wives husbandless, our children fatherless. No more do we squabble over six inches of earth, wheather ones Lord's land should become anothers. Now we can turn to our own lands, and to prospering that which is ours, united. Together we look towards a future, a future where one prospers, and we all prosper. To guard and protect these rights that are ours, from the highest lord to humblest peasant, I will entrust forth brave, honest, loyal Lords with the heavy task of leading us towards this prosperous future. This task is not one in which I give lightly, and will heave large responsibilities on those who receive them, though I know these four Lords to be up to the task. In the North, I proclaim Lord Ryam Tyrell the Warden, the lands of Winterfell, and the many Lords and Bannerman that fall under the large lands of the North, from the Neck to the Wall. In the South, I proclaim Lord Direwolf the Warden, the lands of the Salt Shore, and the many Lords and Bannerman that fall under the sweeping lands of the South, every tree, rock and castle south of Highgarden In the West, I proclaim Lord Acheron the Warden, the lands of Casterly Rock, and the many Lords and Bannerman that fall under the beautiful lands of the West, from the West Coast, down to Highgarden, and across to Rivverun. In the East, I proclaim, and this was indeed the hardest decision, Lord Daulden the Warden, the lands of the Eyrie, and the many Lords and Bannerman that fall under the breathtaking lands of the East, from the coast down to Storm's End, and across to Harrenhal. To Melengavor Curugil I request that you join me at my royal seat at King's Landing, as an esteemed member of my small council, as my Hand of the King. To my loyal brother Ranly Baratheon, I could wish no greater sword defending my back than thy own. Please do me the great honor of becoming my shield, in light and darkness, commander of my armies, but more imporantly Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. To my Lord and ally Lord Paulus, an ever faithful and just man, with endless knowledge of the law, I would be honoured if you would join me on the council as my Master of Laws. Lets this be known as from the mouth of none other than Verathoc Baratheon, King of the Andals and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm. |

Menelvagor sat in his study, enjoying the newest book he had gotten. He had borrowed the book from a friend, and it was as good as his friend had told them. He stopped reading for a second, and allowed himself to smile contentdly. All was well. After long hours of endless arguements, they had finally managed to achieve peace. Even though he was not the sole bringer of peace, he considered being a part of the process his greatest achievment. He was certain that Lord Ranly would quickly return his army to his own land, and return Blackmont to him. He was happy. A good book, a glass of wine, a comfy chair... what more could a man want? Suddenly there came a knock on his open door. Without looking up, he knew Yehuda wa the one knocking, simply from the style of the knock. "Come in, Yehuda", he said, still not looking up from his book. "What is it?" "A raven has come form Lor- excuse me, King Verathoc." Menelvagor looked up, suddenly interested. Why would Verathoc write to him? Well, the best way to know was to read the letter. He took the message from Yehuda's hand and quickly opened the ribbon keeping it closed. His eyes scanned the page, quickly reading what information was there. He reached the end, and smiled. He looked up at Yehuda. "I have good news and bad news. Verathoc has chosen me for his Hand." "I see", Yehuda said, "This is good, because you now have power, and it shows that Verathoc trusts you. Yet it is bad, because you will have to cease with your semi-hedonistic lifestyle." "True", Menelvagor chuckled, "Very true. But time is wasting. I wnat us packed and ready to go in two days. Only the Lord's Hunt is coming with me, and their squires. We need nobody else. Each man will decide for himself what to bring. I do not think we should take too much. I personally am taking only a few of my robes, my jewelry, a few miscallenous items, and my books." "Which is not too much, of course", Yehuda replied. "We only need half a carriage for your books!" He observed. "But it probably does no matter. If we will ive there, you will need your books. I am goig to pack." "Wait", Menelvagor said. "Let me write an answer, so you may take it with you to the Ravenry." "Of course." Menelvagor quickly wrote a ferw lines on a clean piece of parchment. 'To King Verathoc, I have recieved your message regarding posts in your kingdom. I humbly agree to serve as your Hand, and help you in all matters. In two days i will leave Starfall, setting out to King's Landing. I expect to be there in a week and a half, a fortnight at the most. Your Faithful Hand of the King, Menelvagor Curugil, Flame of the West, Star of the East, etc.' |

For the most part Ranly's lands became the king's land but he kept his word and had Blackmont given to Menelvagor. Ranly rode north to King's Landing the next day but for leaving he wrote a letter of his own. The knights he would request to be the other six in the king's guard. To King Verathoc I accept your offer for command of the king's guard and i will hold the position with honor. In the list below are men i belive to be worthy of being knights of the King's Guard. Ser Brine Sharp, For heroic actions in war and tourney. Ser Reynauld Royce for show of skill in tourney. General Marx of Lord Daulden's army for show of tactical skill in battle. Ser Joras of Sarsfield for show of skill and humility in the tourney. Ser Vance of the Dreadfort for show of Bravery in the Tourney Ser Josaiah Arund, of Riverrun for his show of mounted skill in the Tourney. As the Ravens sent out the letters Ranly rode out of Mistwood his men with him all of them dressed in white. Ranly himself in the white of the king's guard. The men he brought with him would be guards for king's landing yet he had a feeling the war was long past and the men of westros would finally have peace. |

Brandon Martell sat in his chair. An opened letter lay on the table. His eyes were closed, he was still awake, but wanted to relax and think. A servant stood next to him awaiting his orders. Finally, Brandon turned to the servant. "Pack some provisions and get my household guard ready to ride for King's Landing at the break of dawn." "What shall I tell the captain if he asks why?" Brandon thought on that for a while and came to an answer. "Just say one word." "What word would that be, my Lord?" "Peace." |

Lord Ryam was sitting in his solar when Maester Tollem came with the letter. “My lord,” he said as he entered the warmed room. “What is it Tollem?” Ryam questioned looking up from some manuscript he was reading. “Lord- King Verathoc has sent us am letter my lord.” He gave Ryam the parchment as he set the book down. “I received it this morn.” So Verathic is our new king, he thought unrolling the parchment. He smiled as he read it though, pace at least. He looked up as he finished reading. “Anything else?” “No ser. What do you plan to do?” “I plan to sail to the Landing in three days time. By the moon’s rise this night, I shall draw up a list of names to join me on my stay.” He grinned at a thought. “Let my sons and daughters know of this voyage- and tell Garlen that he will indeed see the Landing, but not in flames as he had liked.” He chucked. Garlen was his second oldest and itched to see the southron slain. But alas, that was in the days of war and conquest- those days had ended. Seven children were brought forth from Lord Ryam’s loins, and seven lords and a King ruled the Seven Kingdoms. Perhaps someday the realm would be a common kin as well. But as he drifted in to thought the master interrupted. “And what will I tell those who question your decision?” “Tell them…tell them that a man has united his kingdom.” |

Daulden received the letter from a familiar messenger. He realized when the man spoke that it was the same that delivered the letter that told of the army that threatened his land... It seemed like it was so long ago... "Lord Den, I've a letter from Ver... King Verathoc." Stuttering on the title Daulden nodded and sighed, holding out his hand for the letter. "Thank you, tell someone to prepare my horse a a very small guard. I'm going to the king." Daulden wasn't too sure what he would do, he was proclaimed Warden of the East according the letter. His eyes ran over it a few times and his daughter came in. "Father, I want to go with you..." Her voice was girlish but it carried well from the other side of the room. "I don't think that'd be such a great idea..." He closed his eyes and shook his head. He didn't really ant to go himself but he knew it was his obligation to. He wasn't looking so he didn't realize that his daughter was walking forward, eyes full of fury. Raising her fist up in the air over his head she nearly yelled. "You never let me do anything beside study war and politics! It's not fair! If i am to possibly become a leader then I must know what I might be coming up against!" she swung her arms down and stamped her feet in a kind of temper tantrum you would expect to come form a 5 year old. The father had to admit, she had a semi-good point. It was not without it's flaws though and he knew that he could easily get out of her coming but he simply sighed again and nodded. "Fine... You are more stubborn than your mother. I hope it leads you well when I'm gone." Smiling he raised his head and looked at her. "You'll be good though yes?" "Yay!" hugging her father she gave him a mischievous smile before running off. Daulden knew that she meant to not answer his question but he let it go. She wouldn't do anything that he himself would not do... He hoped. "King Verathoc... not too bad of a sound to it. Maybe it'll get better as time goes along too." Sighing he stood up and went outside to see how his guard and horse preparations were coming. |

Ranly didn't see king's landing first he smelt it. Going to have to get used to this smell "Alright men we should be able to see the city over the next hill" He called back to his men and spurred his horse up the hill as he reached the crest he looked over the great city of King's landing and said to him self "We'll at least i won't have to worry about not finding a whore while i am here." |
