What became of Bartholomew Thorne?

Actually, I think it would be a glorious way to end a villain--trapped helplessly in a cell and drowned like a common rat. Something of poetic justice, don't you think?

Very true...hmm.

"He was tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgul, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow, the most tireless of all the Fellowship."

kind of a disturbing, and not quite as cool or righteously just as if he had trapped himself in the cell and then died of the wave...I hate the prospect of drowning...so much water...<shiver>...he deserves it no doubt...

Foremost to defend,

I don't either. Thorne's too bad of a villian to die like that!

Totally! I like the Nigel idea, but one problem, He was hunting Thorne! But then again he could be hunting him because he has something that Thorne needs/asks for? Confusing!

I think that Nigel released Thorne, because, remember how Nigel didn't like the idea of pirates chasing pirates for the British? Plus, he left right before the tidal wave hit. Also, on about page 260, they said that Nigel couldn't contact Scully that far out.... Scully was Thorne's info guy, and Nigel was his contact in the British Navy!!! So I'm firmly stuck on the Nigel idea.
And who could be worse than Thorne? The only person, or creature, that I can think of, would be Davy Jones. :'( Just my opinion, though.

Hmm...The Nigel idea sounds like it could be true, but Cat ans Anne CANNOT be related! That would just be weird... But maybe one of them is related to Cmmodore Blake's wife, Dolphin. She had red hair, just like Anne's and Cat's mothers. That would be pretty ironic... a British naval officer related to a pirate.

BTW Mr. Batson clarified that Cat and Anne are not related at all.

AJ, Thorne didn't sell his soul to the devil! You are the only one I know who would even suggest that! Besides, stuff like that only happens in your stories.

And thank goodness Cat and Anne aren't related!

If they did, it kinda be that Luke/Leah thing where they liked each other, but then found they were siblings. Always thought that was weird.

Nigel seems to be the likeliest choice for having set Thorne loose. hmm... who could be worse than Thorne. I don't think it's going to be anything creepy like Davey Jones or Thorne losing his soul or anything like that. I think Thorne is one of a few henchmen under one ringmaster who controls them all. That would be one evil guy! just a thought...

I don't know what to think about it? From the evidence in the book, he either broke out himself or had help. I don't see any other plainer theory...

maybe there's something out there that we're all missing... some idea, that once we see it in the book, we all go "oooh, I don't know why I didn't think of that." Let's have a brainstorming session. Random thought- what if a mob, or even one person, came and killed Thorne because of a personal grievance. Nah, never mind, but it's brainstorming, so you say anything, no matter how dumb it seems...

Oh my gosh! I just thought of something concerning the "villain worse than Thorne" question. I was re-reading IoS the other day and found a name. When Cat and Anne go to the abandoned town near Mission (pg. 93) and they freak out once they find the dead people in the basement, Cat asks "Who would do that?" Anne replies and list 3 names... Edmund Bellamy, Chevillard or Thorne. We know it was Thorne, but who is Edmund Bellamy? If he's up there with Chevillard and Thorne, he has to be evil. Plus, he was listed before Chevillard (who, in my opinion, is worse than Thorne). What if they were listed in descending order of how evil they were? That means Bellamy is worse than Thorne. Right?
