Wrestling is currently in the doldrums, as everyone knows. It all starts at the top; the main event scene is what makes or breaks the whole thing. This set is always made up of a very small number of "mega-stars" who monopolize the main events and World Championship matches. During the "Attitude Era" (the most successful run in wrestling history) two men dominated: Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Currently, we have four guys at the top: Edge, John Cena, Batista, and Randy Orton. All four guys get repeatedly billed as "the future of the business". Well, the future ran out about 2 years ago for these guys. Here's why: Stone Cold ascended to the main event when he won the Royal Rumble in January 1998. From that point on, he was "made". Austin continued, with the exception of a 10-month absence in 1999-2000, to headline until his walkout in May 2002. He returned 9 months later, but only had two matches. That period wasn't part of his run at the top. That's January 1998 to May 2002. That put him at the top for 4 years, 4 months. Steve Austin = 4 years, 4 months The Rock became a main eventer when he was entered into a tournament for the vacant WWE Championship at Survivor Series in November 1998. He won it, and never looked back. "The Great One" went on to headline WWE, with the exception of a couple 3-month breaks for movie filming, until his loss to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam in August of 2002. He returned 6 months later, but that was only for a handful of matches over 2 months. Not part of his run. That's November 1998 to August 2002. That put him at the top for 3 years, 9 months. The Rock = 3 years, 9 months Together, Rock and Austin were headliners together from Rock's ascension in November 1998 to Austin's walkout in May 2002. That's 3 years, 6 months. Rock/Austin Era = 3 years, 6 months Now, we come to the current crop of guys..... Randy Orton ascended when he won the World Title at SummerSlam in August 2004. In case you don't have a calendar, it is now April 2008. August 2004 to April 2008 is 3 years, 8 months. Randy Orton = 3 years, 8 months Batista became a headliner when he won the Royal Rumble in January 2005. It's now April 2008. January 2005 to April 2008 is 3 years, 3 months. Batista = 3 years, 3 months John Cena....(waits for everyone to boo)....ascended to main event status when he became #1 contender for J.B.L.'s WWE Championship in February 2005. With the exception of his 4-month injury hiatus, he's been on top ever since. It's now April 2008. February 2005 to April 2008. That's 3 years, 2 months. John Cena = 3 years, 2 months Edge became a player when he won the Money In The Bank Ladder Match that grants him a World Championship match whenever he desires at WrestleMania in March 2005. It's now April 2008. March 2005 to April 2008 is 3 years, 1 month. Edge = 3 years, 1 month Just for the hell of it, I'll throw J.B.L. in there: J.B.L. became a main eventer when he challenged Eddie Guerrero for the WWE Championship at Judgment Day in May 2004. It's now April 2008. May 2004 to April 2008 is 3 years, 11 months. J.B.L. = 3 years, 11 months All these guys have been main eventers all at the same time since Edge was "made" in March 2005 until now, April 2008. That's 3 years, 1 month. Edge/Orton/Cena/J.B.L./Batista "Era" = 3 years, 1 month That's 3 years, 1 month that we've been dealing with this crop of main stars. Rock and Austin lasted, from start to finish, 3 years, 6 months. Think about that for a minute. The entire run of Austin and Rock lasted only 5 months longer that the current "era of shittiness". Come SummerSlam, these clowns will have had the SAME amount of time on top as the most lucrative era in history. That's why I get a hairball every time the dumbass announcers say "they're the future". They're not "going to run with the ball"....they were handed the fucking ball 3 YEARS AGO!!! They've had just about as much time as Austin and Rock....what's the excuse?! Austin and Rock ran out after 3 years, 6 months. It's damn sure time to finally realize that the current crop isn't the answer, and end their little "era". Time to move on to another crop of main eventers. The timeframe has precedent. I just proved that. |

Fixed that for you. ![]() As for JBL... he wasn't that long on the top, he also had a year and a half as SD! commentator. Edited by MY85, Apr 28 2008, 08:50 PM.
