Not everyone who visits this site is used role playing, or RPing for short. This little guide type thing should tell you what you need to know about RPing, since you might not know what it is, and therefore would not be able to be very active here. So now you know what this document was made for. Now, I should probably get into telling you what RPing is and how to do it, so without further ado, here we go. RPing stems from a love of writing and being creative in general. If you enjoy making stories, you can enjoy RPing. If you don’t like writing, you might as well turn back now, in my opinion, because RPing is just writing in a collaborative way, which I will explain later. When you RP, you are basically taking on the life of a character and guiding him or her through the paths that life takes. The paths may involve fantasy-like settings, fighting, overcoming different obstacles, and solving problems. It may involve more than this, but you take what comes and go with it. RPing comes in many different flavors, if you will. It can be a fantasy one, as mentioned before, an everyday life type of thing, a sci-fi type of thing…and basically just about any genre you could think of. Many RPs stem from popular anime and book series (i.e.Harry Potter and Bleach), as well as from many other sources. Many others are created straight from someone’s mind, with characters, settings, and problems completely made up. In many cases, the RP will go off in many unknown directions based on choices the people RPing make. The creators don’t always know exactly what will happen, so feel free to take the scenario into random directions, unless stated otherwise. Now I’ll explain how you go about doing this. RPing starts with one thing, if you’re following an RP already created. If you don’t have a character, you won’t be going anywhere. RP forums will usually have a character template you can go by in order to make it. The character is your RPing tool. Your character interacts with other characters and does things. If you’ve ever played an RPG like Final Fantasy or Fire Emblem, you have a general idea of what you do when you RP. However, when you RP, you have much more freedom. You can go and do whatever you want. You can create problems to be solved, offer to make settings, and generally do whatever you want as stated before. Now, when you RP, you are basically telling a story based on the inputs of others. It’s a collaborative effort. The best way to find out what to do when RPing is to go and look at past RPs or have someone practice with you and show you the ropes. Don’t expect to be good at it the very first time you try. It takes practice to be good at RPing. However, there will be a few things that you will be expected to do. • You must be able to lead the RP on. This involves making up scenarios and pushing the RP further. Have some action occur, have something happen. Don’t just have your character agree with something and leave it at that. • Make sure you follow the forum rules. • Don’t ruin anyone else’s fun! If you need any more assistance, ask someone who’s experienced in RPing, and they’ll be glad to help! They ought to… |
