Boxcar Children!!!!!!!! OMG! I never really got into the whole series but I probably read the first book a dozen times when I was little.

I know those scary books, too! I LOVED them!

What about those poem books. Like, "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic."

Those two books of poetry are by Shel Silverstein - as was The Giving Tree, which I can't stand but most people love.

i loved the Babysitter Clubs books, not only because the author was a Smithie, but because all the females were so different.

i read the hardback nancy drews, and have always had a passion for children's picture books. I also read all the Paula Danziger's and Judy Blume's, etc, etc.

I remember my mother reading me If you give a Mouse a Cookie, If you give a Moose a Muffin, and The very Hungry Caterpillar.

LOL I never noticed but all the books I used to read were about food.

Shel Silverstein wrote the books, I think. I read them when I was younger.

I LOVED The Babysitter's Club - all the girls were just so great and individual.

I was ADDICTED to Christopher Pike and R. L. Stine - not the Goosebumps books though - they had some freaky material, man.

I also read Shakespeare when I was 11. Blame my mother, lol. I loved to read so she bought this Completed Works of Shakespeare compliation and gave it me. Had NO CLUE what it was all about at the time but I LOVED the words. LOVED. THEM. It also lead into other reading so I was happy.

can't do sleeping beauty. thought sleeping beauty is purely about the voice of sleeping beauty. it's totally not dark enough to be the real story.
THIS.

VERY TRUE.

I have this fabulous erotic novel titled "Enchantment" that really delves into the dark aspect of the fairytales. It's pretty awesome.

And I have NO CLUE if you find comics at ALL interesting, monday, but if you do I recommend "Fables". It's based on fairytale characters in our modern day world. It's my favorite title right now.

I used to read all those "young adult" books back in the day when I actually had time to read.

Babysitters Club AND the spin-off Babysitter's Little Sister (you know, the one with little Karen. :D )
Nancy Drew (the old school hardback books)
Fingerprints
Almost anything written by Francine Pascal (Fearless, Sweet Valley High and Junior High....)
Almost anything written by Judy Blume ( Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Blubber, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing...)
Harry Potter (of course)
The Outsiders (will forever love this book)

Huh, I honestly didn't like the Babysitter's Club. I remember being in, like, the 5th grade and it was probably just a TAD over my head.

Nicole LOVED The Outsiders. :)

I collect tons of stuff about fairy tales - a bunch of erotica ones, but in general i'm a fairy tale buff. Wanna talk Jack Zipes or the history of various tales, I'm your gal? Took classes on it in college and everything.

And I confess that i meant to say snow white, not sleeping beauty. i like disney's sleeping beauty, i cannot stand disney's snow white.

I never got into comics much because growing up i had no money, so if it wasn't in the library, i wasn't reading it.

anyone here read Jane Yolen, Mercedes Lackey, or Marion Zimmer Bradley?

Woah, that's weird. I was reading this thread earlier, and flipping out cause somebody mentioned the Scary Story books, which I ADORED when I was younger. I read them over and over and over and over again. Seriously. Cause they had effing scary-as-shit illustrations.

BUT! My point, is that I was about to post in here, too about this book that I used to get out of the elementary school library like, every other trip, about Vampires. So I looked it up, and it's by Jane Yolen. I found it because I remembered that inside the front cover, I'm pretty sure there was a single line that read "Ve vant to bite your neck."

...and I liked it. HEE. I was obsessed with that book for quite a while. I don't even remember what was in it now, though.

Oh, and just for fun: ALDSKFJALDKFJADFDJKFSDF!!! SCARY STORY ILLUSTRATIONS:

OMG the Scary Story books!! :thud When I was in elementary school my best friend and I would have sleepovers and her sister would read those books to us and totally creep us out for the night! I remember there was some story about a rat in a bucket of fried chicken...? Or something like that.

And I also LOVED the Baby-Sitter's Club series. I actually still have them all packed in boxes in my attic. Seriously, Ann M. Martin taught me how to write. It's because of the Baby-Sitter's Club books and her other book, Me and Katie (the Pest), that I learned how to write novels. :D

I also loved the R. L. Stine books....wasn't he the one who had the Fear Street series? I always loved his books because you spent the first half of it suspecting one person, and then by the end it totally turned out to be someone else! Also, I remember reading an article about him, where he talked about how he was told to shorten his name (Robert Lawrence) to R. L. because it sounded creepier and therefore fit the image of his books better. :P

Those Scary Stories books were the shit. Actually scary stories, scary illustrations to accompany the stories, and they were super short and easy to read - perfect for campouts and sleepovers.

I don't know these Scary Stories of which everyone speaks. I feel so ignorant. I'll have to check them out. However, as I'm still afraid of the dark, maybe that's not the best idea.

I loved all Jane Yolen books, still do. I teach them to my students. There were two books of hers; Dragon's Blood and Heart's Blood, which i will forever hold dear. A Sending of Dragons (the third in the story) is not my favorite, but it does complete the series. And anyone who loves fairy tale re-tellings should read Briar Rose. They just should.

On threads like these, I thank god for bringing me into this world in the 90s! Nick was at it's best! You could wake up every Saturday morning and watch cartoons! You were there to watch the Rugrats NEVER age and you remember asking, "Wait, who is living in a pinapple under the sea?" in 1999. Everything was just :ftw

It's sad to say that I still watch Nick when I get bored or nothing else is on but I'd MUCH rather watch old Nick then the crap that's on now.

I think Disney (which I never really watched as a kid) is better than Nick now. I feel like Nick shows after like 1 P.M. are for only Pre-teens. It wasn't like that back in the 90s, where in the afternoon the shows were are almost everyone (even parents!) And there were actually CARTOONS. All we have now (I think?) is Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents. And they haven't even put up new episodes of Fairly Oddparents in awhile..which makes me sad :(

Some shows I look back fondly on:
AAAHH!!! Real Monsters
The Angry Beavers
CatDog
Doug
Gumby
Hey Arnold! (Move it Football Head! To this day, the episode of them singing opera is still fresh in my mind)
KaBlam!
Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon
Oh Yeah! Cartoons
Pinky and the Brain (Poor Brain never got to take over the world, did he?)
The Ren & Stimpy Show ("Happy Happy, Joy Joy!", "Don't Pee on The Electric Fence", "Don't Push the Spiny Red Button"/"Oh my beloved ice creeeam bar!")
Rocko's Modern Life ("I AM THE CHEESE!", "You are all wild pigs! I'M A WILD PIG!" :rotfl ...my dad used that quote about an hour ago..not even kidding you. And if you don't remember it, here's a little reminder from good ol' YT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHM3uuzBwRg )
Rugrats (and the movies! Who else cried in the first movie when Tommy was sleeping with the slipper and singing to himself or when Tommy and Dill were in the cave and Tommy threw his compass? :crying :crying :crying )
Tiny Toon Adventures
The Wild Thornberrys
Are You Afraid of the Dark (that STILL scares the piss out of me!)
Double Dare
Figure It Out
Nickelodeon GUTS/Global GUTS
Legends of the Hidden Temple
All That (Original Cast was the BEST)
The Adventures of Pete & Pete
Clarissa Explains It All
The Journey of Allen Strange
Kenan & Kel ("Who Loves Orange Soda? Kel loves orange soda. Is it true? Mmhmm, I do, I do, I do-oooo")
Salute Your Shorts (I think everyone can sing the Camp Anawana Theme Song!)
The Secret World of Alex Mack
100 Deeds for Eddie McDowed

Oh, and their hosts! Who remembers Face in the morning and Stick Stickly in the Afternoon? :P

Books wise? I wasn't a HUGE reader back then. And if I did read, I don't remember what I read. I remember not being interested in many of the Goosebump classics but I LOVED R.L. Stine's "older" version called "Fear Street". Now I read a little bit more but only when I'm in the library not doing classwork or when I'm NOT on the computer at home :angel But come on, fanfiction is reading too....right? :P

Don Bluth movies.

All Dogs Go to Heaven - I loved as a little girl but when watched recently it's rather sad and a bit scary. Giant singing alligator anyone? Not to mention that whole going to hell thing.

An American Tail - Jesus if I don't cry every time those little mice warble their way (off key) to the moon. Seriously. :crying And Tiger is serious love. Plus, the history lessen it unknowingly offers is great for little kids.

The Land Before Time - It's subsequent, and far inferior, sequels don't exist in my mind and yes, I still get all weepy over the song at the end when the little ones are reunited with their families. Duckie :ftw

The Secret of Nimh - My all-time fave DB film. The concept is eerily relevant, the animation is outstanding, and it's just his most beautiful movie.
