So first you have,

You click on bases, and you get,

See what happened? Clicking on the category's button brings up a list with all the parts of that type.

This is just a prototype, but I want to see how to improve it.

...So, how do I improve it?
Should I have the category buttons always visible up top?
Should I create an underlay for every part and make it look nice in a grid of sorts?

I'm horrible at designing good interfaces.

Well, you need a way to navigate the different submenus, otherwise you'd get stuck in one place. So having all the menu buttons always visible would be one way to do that. Another way would be to have a back button that takes you back to the main menu.

Back button. So that's why I wanted to take a new screenshot instead of reusing the old one for the second pic <_<
