Name: Martel
Rank: Mercenary
Former Nation: Begnion
Age: Appears 16, actually 26
Gender: Male
Alliance: Loyalist

Appearance: Martel is a young, handsome man with straight, medium-purple hair. He has a handsome face, and appears much younger, than he is. He has soft, golden eyes, and nicely-shaped face. He has a slender body, and, extending from the top of his neck to his breast, is a magnificent Brand. It's hidden, always, under the collar of his clothing under his armour. Martel wears the armour of a Begnion soldier, but it's armour that's had the symbol of the Empire removed from it, to show that he is a mercenary. Between his pauldrons, draped over the neck of his cuirass, is a cape that is a light brown, and frayed on the edges. His armour's colour has faded, and he likes it this way.

Personality: Martel pushes himself hard. He wants to be the best mercenary there is. He wants to be strong, like his stepfather, and pushes himself the way his stepfather did. He doesn't accept failure in himself, and, as his stepfather kept saying this, he thinks he is pathetic, even though he's improving. As for reasoning for defeating others, he thinks it's because they were weak or weren't thinking. He knows he can be better. Other than that, he's shy, especially with girls, but has a great sense of honour. Martel's a follower, not a leader. He refused many promotions while in the Begnion Army.

Biography: Martel never knew his mother, or his father. Several years ago, he was sent to an orphanage, probably by his parents. He was taken in by the person in charge of the orphanage, Brother Caiwyn. Caiwyn took good care of Martel, making sure he was fed and everything. He didn't let him join the other boys until he was ready, and, before that, he taught him about his Brand, and how the other boys would make fun of him and hate him for it.

Martel was so young, but so mature at a young age. But he spent his time away from the others for that same reason. He would spend the whole day alone, playing alone, working alone. He never did anything with anyone else. He loved his lonesomeness. It led to the perfect person adopting him, an old war vet who had retired. He was a veteran lancer. He gladly took home Martel, hoping to make the boy a man. His training was rigorous, and hard, and soon, Martel was quite a fine lancer. He would have been taught more, but his teacher and the only father he'd truly had passed away, leaving the house to Martel, who couldn't upkeep it and was forced to sell it, and then start a life as a wanderer, and then, eventually, a soldier.

He entered the service of a not-so-well-known nobleman named Beauford. He became his personal guard, and continued his training as he served. He was soon seen as a lance prodigy, when actually, it was just because he aged slowly. He kept his Brand concealed. He hated his Brand, because he blamed it on the fact that he had never known his parents. He believed his brand was why he'd been abandoned. He tried several times to remove the accursed thing, but to no avail.

His new master wasn't the smartest man, and he soon grew addicted to gambling, and along with it, drinking. The nobleman soon dwindled away every bit of cash he had, and soon, all he had was Martel at his side, still devoutly guarding him. He told Martel to go do something with his life, rather than spending his time guarding a drunk nothing, who had sold everything for the sake of gambling. It took some convincing, but Martel finally left, seeking work.

He entered the service, under a young commander, General Cathran, who was a very good commander. Being in Cathran's service, Martel learned a lot. Cathran offered him an officer position, Martel refused. He wanted to remain an ordinary soldier. Eventually, he was sent to another post, this one, he did not like. He left eventually, and went to seek work as a mercenary. Martel eventually ended up serving under Daein, under the Rider, Bertram, during the Mad King's War. However, he never saw any fighting. He quit the army as the war ended.

Now he lives his life, as a mercenary, a lone mercenary, a wanderer with no purpose other than to have someone commanding his lance, for whatever they may need, as long as it is not something evil. Martel gets by with what he's got, and, as a fine lancer, is sure the future will hold much for him.
